The knocking on the door broke the silence of the classroom.
"Please come in."
William replied without looking up.
"Professor, I've come to report for duty."
A head of fiery red hair appeared in the sight of all the students in the classroom—most of them recognized him; he was Percy Weasley, the prefect of Gryffindor in the sixth year.
"You're a bit early, Percy. Find a place to sit first, and you can review the documents they submit later. Is that alright?"
"No problem, Professor."
Percy responded confidently, which pleased William greatly—no wonder Professor Binns enthusiastically recommended him; after all, Professor Binns couldn't even recognize all his professors anymore.
"An internship certificate and a meager stipend provided by the school—where else could you find such an excellent inspector if not at the school?"
William nodded in relief and continued his work.
Chapter 110 You and Me Under the Lemon Tree
"Percy, what brings him here?"
Fred instinctively gave George a questioning look, but after circling around for a while without finding him, he realized—oh, George had gone to clean the toilet.
This thought made him both amused and uneasy. He and George used to be locked up together, and not being able to see George for so long made him feel a little uncomfortable.
But such worries quickly vanished, as Percy, who had found a seat, was walking briskly toward him.
"George, why did you stop?"
Percy yelled at him fiercely in front of everyone.
“Professor, George’s quill pen has been idle for some time now.”
Under Fred's surprised gaze, Percy looked around in confusion before turning around and changing to a much gentler tone to complain.
"It's okay, as long as the task is completed, it's normal to hesitate a little while tidying up—just finish within the allotted time. Of course, if all else fails, I've applied for a few sleeping bags, hopefully we won't need them."
"Oh, by the way, if we have to use sleeping bags, the door will be locked from the inside. I'll ask a few gentlemen from the oil paintings to keep an eye on the lock."
William's additional words immediately dimmed the eyes of the few bright-eyed boys—as someone who had come from a student background and heard countless stories in Azkaban, William was quite adept at plugging loopholes that students might discover.
-
"Unacceptable. Copying is not just reading it aloud. You need to remove the descriptive words. Those adjectives about the event, such as despicable or filthy, can be removed."
"Unacceptable, the format is incorrect."
"Redo it; too many details about the deeds have been omitted."
……
After the students finished copying the first file, Percy began working quickly, his serious attitude so much so that William had to interrupt him to praise him.
As Professor Binns described, Percy was a man who remained quite patient even with tedious work.
'That's strange. Professor Binns is quite right, but how did he discover it?'
With these doubts in mind, William continued to create the exam papers.
-
"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on finishing tonight's work ahead of schedule. We'll continue next weekend."
After Percy carefully reviewed all the manuscripts, William announced that the work for the evening was officially completed—he also took this opportunity to finish three sets of test papers, feeling a great sense of accomplishment.
"Hey, how's your test going? Are you confident you can hand it in early?"
He cheerfully greeted the students behind him who were taking the exam, but no one answered him.
"It seems not—" William shook his head and looked at the students in front of him. "Alright, you've finished your work. Those who want to wait for their partners can stay in the classroom. If you're bored, you can come and ask me for a test paper—"
Before William could finish speaking, the group of students fled the classroom as if their lives depended on it, leaving their companions behind, cursing their lack of loyalty while frantically writing in their notebooks.
“Well, it seems the exam papers aren’t very popular,” he said, waving to the last student who slipped out the door before turning to Percy.
"How's work going?"
“Very good, Professor.”
Percy, who appeared calm, seemed to be suppressing his emotions—which immediately made William feel guilty.
"Isn't it a bit much to bring in the best sixth-grade student to review the manuscript? This is the student with the best grades at Hogwarts, twelve certificates, a true academic star. Reviewing their file is a huge waste of their talent."
"Thank you for your hard work. This job was originally supposed to be mine, but you did a very good job today. To be honest, I didn't expect you to be this efficient."
William patted him approvingly on the shoulder, then pulled a small purse from his pocket.
"Don't refuse today's allowance. They're here to put you in solitary confinement, you're here to work overtime. There's a special fund for compiling the school's history book, it's not much, but you definitely have to get it."
"Professor, this..."
"Here you go. You'll have to work hard again next week. This week was the first time we did a large-scale transcription, so we used a shorthand quill pen to handle the less important parts. Next week will be quite tough. I'll discuss a raise with Professor McGonagall."
After paying the allowance, William felt much less guilty about exploiting his tool, and he patted Percy on the shoulder again.
"Alright, go back to the lounge and fulfill your duties as prefect. Go on."
Percy left the classroom excitedly, leaving William and a group of students writing furiously.
"Their confinement has ended ahead of schedule. You have another twenty minutes. If you can't finish, you can take the test paper back with you."
-
"Phew, has Percy gone mad?! Mine got sent back twice!"
"Twice is nothing—I did it three times! They call it an inspection, but it's really just putting us all in solitary confinement. Where does he get the energy to keep an eye on us?"
"You guys are lucky. I only made a few more typos. Percy actually took my copy to the professor and asked if he should make me clean toilets!"
Almost as soon as they left the classroom, a group of troublemakers sneaked into an empty classroom. Although Filch had wiped out their usual gathering place, they still had a backup location.
Almost as soon as they entered, everyone turned their complaints to Percy—it was only the authority of the prefect and professor that kept these guys in check, otherwise they would have been arguing with Percy in the classroom.
Just as the group was having a good time complaining, the classroom door suddenly opened.
Everyone immediately covered their heads and rushed towards the door—they suspected that Filch had brought people back last time based on their faces.
"Stop—what are you thinking?"
George's helpless voice rang out from the doorway, and the people who had rushed up returned to their original positions with smirks.
What does it taste like?
“Shut up, Fred, you traitor—you do the same thing even when you're cleaning the toilet for three hours straight.”
Lee Jordan said, feigning seriousness.
"Oh, Li, you're washing the chamber pot."
George put his arm around his shoulder without any hesitation. After meeting at the castle, the two headed towards the empty classroom. During their conversation, they discovered that there was a traitor among them.
The toilet faction and the chamber pot faction smugly encroached on the space of others. They formed an alliance and recklessly squeezed the space of other factions, as if they had won a battle.
……
"Speaking of which, why is Percy there? That big-headed guy has never been associated with solitary confinement before, so why is he so smug today?"
After a long and lively discussion, the group finally turned their attention back to today's hot topic—Percy and the solitary confinement room, which seemed completely unrelated.
"Let me tell you why—"
The classroom door opened again, and this time the students who looked utterly exhausted entered—they had just barely survived William's test, and everyone had barely passed the exam.
“We’re in solitary confinement, Percy—he got a stipend from the professor.”
The air suddenly became heavy and oppressive.
Chapter 111 Percy, You Big Head
The tranquility of the empty classroom, which smelled of lemons, was finally broken.
"allowance?"
Are you sure?
"I saw it with my own eyes. Even if it was all Xike, it would still be a lot of money. More importantly, the professor said it was today's portion."
"Damn it, I knew that bighead wouldn't come to anything good—we'd get punished, and he'd get the money?"
"Exactly! No wonder he was so eager to return the copied documents; it turns out he gets paid for it!"
Normally, out of respect for the Weasley brothers (after all, no one can outdo them when it comes to causing trouble), only the Weasley brothers would call Percy "Big Head." But today, with everyone in a fit of anger, they didn't care about that anymore, and even called him "Big Head" in a more gentle way.
But despite their complaints, the group couldn't do anything about Percy—he was the prefect.
Although prefects have far fewer privileges than professors, if Percy were to target them, it would be far more serious than targeting professors. Professors don't usually go to the college lounge, while prefects can theoretically keep an eye on students 24/7.
After discussing for a long time about possible pranks for Percy without any results, the group became increasingly angry and finally decided to prank William.
"Put Percy's matter aside for now—I don't believe he can be completely without making any mistakes. We need to focus our attention on the new professor!"
George stated unequivocally that he was prepared to put aside his own family ties and temporarily halt the discussion with Percy, intending to settle scores later.
While cleaning the toilet, he had ample time to reflect on the gains and losses of the past period.
By the time Filch announced with satisfaction that they could leave, he already had a plan in mind.
"New professor, forget it—I don't want to do any more exams. I feel like I've done a lifetime's worth of exams today."
The man who brought the news from Percy was now slumped on the table, looking as if he had just covered a cat with a blue cloth.
"lifetime?"
Fred let out a distinctly cold laugh. "Here's a hint—you probably didn't see it while you were doing the tests at the end, but while we were copying these materials, our dear new professor had already prepared three tests! Yes, you heard right, three!"
"Merlin's beard, three?"
"Yes, three sheets. I saw it with my own eyes; the quill pen was almost constantly in use."
The temperature in the room suddenly rose by one degree, and most of the cold air disappeared.
"Using magic to create exam questions—I hate magic!"
