Just then, the Martian Hunter cast a glance at Wang Baixi.
Of those present, only Batman and Superman understood what he was about to do.
That is mind reading.
Martian Manhunter's telepathic abilities are an open secret within the Justice League. Most of the time, he actively blocks out the noise that floods his mind, only lightly touching the surface of a new member's thoughts during an initial assessment.
You don't need to go deep; just get a feel for the other person's current emotional state.
However, when his mental reach extended towards Wang Baixi, it was blocked by something.
It feels like you reach out to push open a door, but your fingers pass right through the door panel, only to find there's nothing behind it.
That's really weird.
Martian Hunter regained his composure, showing no unusual expression on his face.
Wang Baixi continued greeting everyone, seemingly unaware of what was happening. Instead, he struck up a conversation with them. To everyone's surprise, Wang Baixi seemed to know quite a bit about the lives of many of them, even though he was only a casual reader. Yet, he could still tell them all in great detail.
The crowd looked at each other, some blankly, others chuckling to themselves.
“You certainly know a lot about us,” Aquaman raised an eyebrow, “more than any land dweller I know.”
“Your names are known from Washington to the Far East.” Wang Baixi spread his hands. “Speaking of which, what about Wonder Woman?”
That's the important point, okay?
The meeting room fell silent for a moment.
“Diana…” Superman floated back to the ground, “She’s not in the watchtower right now.”
“Not long ago, a battle for the title of Wonder Woman took place on Paradise Island, and Diana lost to her friend Artemis,” Batman continued. “Now Artemis has taken over the title of Wonder Woman, while Diana herself continues her heroic deeds in Boston.”
"To be honest, we don't know how to define their relationship right now," Superman added.
"I really don't understand, why can't there be two Wonder Women at the same time? There can be two Batmen too!" The Flash couldn't help but complain.
"Alright, Wally," Superman said softly, interrupting the discussion that was veering off-topic.
But nobody paid any attention to him.
Because the Flash quickly brought up the question he'd been holding back for a long time, "Speaking of which, Wong: you can resurrect other people, right? So could you resurrect my uncle, Barry Allen?"
Barry Allen, the second Flash known as "the fastest man in the world," disappeared into the river of time during the Crisis on Infinite Earths while trying to save the multiverse. Afterward, his disciple and nephew Wally took over his mantle.
But in reality, he didn't actually die; instead, he became lost within the Speed Force.
Wang Baixi, who had some recollection of this, was quite helpless. How could he possibly be resurrected?
Faced with such a heavy topic, the playfulness and ease on his face disappeared.
“I’m sorry, Wally,” he slowly shook his head, “I can only resurrect people whose remains are intact. But Mr. Barry Allen’s remains have vanished, and I cannot help you with that.”
The Flash's eyes dimmed slightly, but he quickly smiled again. "It's nothing, I was just asking, don't worry about it."
Wang Baixi noticed that after he said "no trace of the body," Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern who had been silent, turned his head slightly.
In those eyes, which looked unusually tired from having experienced so much, a subtle struggle seemed to have just passed through.
Wang Baixi immediately understood the reason.
He wanted to resurrect the people of Seaside City, but he didn't bring it up because he knew it was simply unrealistic.
Among those present, he and the Flash were not the only ones with similar fates. Batman's parents, Aquaman's father, and even his own parents had all passed away many years ago. But does that mean they can take advantage of their proximity to the source and use this opportunity to satisfy their own selfish desires?
His strong sense of morality wouldn't allow him to do it.
Most importantly, the matter of the dead coming back to life reminded him of the Black Death Emperor. This made him think that Wang Baixi's magic was not as perfect as it sounded.
Magic always comes at a price.
“Yes, we know you can’t cast your magic at will, but many people don’t understand that, and they don’t care.” On the other side, Batman broke the brief awkward silence: “King, your reputation has spread, and it won’t be long before all sides come after you. We can’t let those with ulterior motives succeed first.”
“Wang, Batman is right, that’s what I wanted to bring up with you too.” Superman sat back in his seat, arms crossed. “I plan to formally invite you to join the Justice League as a special advisor. At the same time, I propose that we officially remove the word ‘America’ from the name of the League, so that it will no longer be the Justice League of America (JLA), but simply the ‘Justice League’.”
Hmm, it seems the timeline is accelerating towards the timeline after the flashpoint paradox.
"I wholeheartedly agree," Green Arrow, a far-leftist, immediately declared.
But Green Lantern frowned. "Then what about the UN?"
"Who cares?" Green Arrow waved his hand. "The UN isn't going to send troops when we need them anyway."
Martian Manhunter and Aquaman remained silent, raising their hands in agreement.
These two are not even Americans; you have to question whether they're even human.
The Flash also raised his hand, saying, "I don't care, I'd join even if it were called Pizza Justice League."
“That Pizza Justice League seems pretty good…” Wang Baixi agreed.
Batman interrupted Wang Baixi's rambling, "So, do you all agree to Wang Baixi joining us?"
Hands were raised one by one, and in the end, everyone except Green Lantern raised their hands.
“Hal?” Superman looked at him.
“Wang, I’m not targeting you personally, and I don’t object to your joining,” Hal Jordan said, placing his hands on the table with his fingers interlaced. “I just feel that your time on the scene has been too short, as if you appeared out of nowhere. I propose that we assign people to supervise Wang Baixi in rotation and establish a probationary period.”
Upon hearing this, Green Arrow gave a wry smile: "You're still so conservative, Hal."
"That's enough, Ollie." Green Lantern really wanted to punch this guy.
Batman didn't respond. Before considering exercising his veto power, he decided to ask Wang Baixi for his opinion. "Wang, what do you think?"
In fact, for Wang Baixi, joining or not joining would not hinder his normal work, and he could understand Green Lantern's concerns.
"Green Lantern is right, I have no objection. To be honest, I didn't expect to join the Justice League, after all, your office is too high up, I'm not used to it. But I'm still very happy to have your recognition and to work with you all, so I fully support Green Lantern's proposal."
Hal glanced at Wang Baixi and nodded.
This young man was much more rational than he had imagined.
"Hey, I have a suggestion. Why not let Wang join the Young Justice League?"
"I'm already of college graduation age!"
"Ahem, Wally, thanks for the suggestion." Superman gently interrupted the Flash's vivid imagination, then turned to Batman. "Now all we need to do is confirm the supervisor. Bruce, how about we leave it to you?"
After all, among the people present, he was the one who knew Wang Baixi the most.
"There is a better candidate than me."
"Who?"
“Zatana, I think she can provide Wang Baixi with more professional supervision and guidance.”
Martian Manhunter nodded slightly. "They both know magic, so it's a reasonable pairing."
"Are you sure she agrees?" Wang Baixi asked.
His abilities are different from hers; she truly knows magic, while he relies on a system!
Batman glanced at him. "She's already in Gotham. We'll go see her in a bit."
"You have really strong execution skills!"
“In that case, let’s leave it to her. By the way, Bruce, does Gotham need our help?” Superman asked. He had just finished dealing with the Joker yesterday, so he was particularly concerned about Gotham.
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle the aftermath,” Batman answered readily, then changed the subject, “Hal, does Seaside City need any help?”
Before Green Lantern could answer, Green Arrow spoke first, "Gotham rich man, you're not the only wealthy guy here. Leave the Beach City business to me."
Then, he winked at Batman.
It means: This guy is in a bad mood lately, so don't add to his burden.
Suddenly, Martian Manhunter's voice also entered Batman's mind.
"Batman, my attempt to read Wang Baixi's mind failed."
Only he could hear it.
Batman did not respond, but simply nodded slightly in silence, which to onlookers would have been his reply to Green Arrow.
Rong En continued to transmit his voice, "Do you have a 'backup plan'?"
Batman gave him the answer with his eyes.
The Martian hunter did not ask any further questions.
He believed no one could do it better than Batman, but he still needed to observe Wang Baixi for a while.
Superman floated over from in front of the head seat, his feet landing on the alloy floor without making a sound. He stopped in front of Wang Baixi and extended his hand.
“Welcome to the team, Wang,” Superman’s lips curled into a smile, “whether this is called a formal membership or not.”
Wang Baixi grasped that hand, and the touch was much warmer than he had imagined, without the oppressive feeling of crushing steel bars that he had expected.
"Thank you, Superman. To be honest, I was just wondering if you were going to use that old-fashioned 'Welcome to our family' line."
“Oh, never mind,” Superman withdrew his hand and crossed his arms over his chest. “Leave the word ‘family’ to Batman.”
Batman is often said to be a lone wolf, but he's actually the one who has assembled the most teams among his crew.
Batman remained silent, only frowning.
Wang Baixi couldn't help but laugh.
He released his grip, sat back down in his chair, and casually glanced at every face in the conference room.
The Flash winked at him, Aquaman slightly raised his trident as a gesture, Martian Manhunter nodded silently, and Green Arrow gave him a cryptic thumbs-up.
Green Lantern didn't show much expression, but he still nodded to him.
This was probably the most dignified acceptance he could receive from this group of people.
Not far away, Batman had already stood up.
"My lord, it's time to return to Gotham."
"Got it, boss."
