"This thing was taken from the scanning module inside your hood. There wasn't this madman originally, right? But the underground black market boss who repaired your hood is from the Court of Owls. When he soldered this miniature positioning transmitter into your scanning module, that's why we were able to locate you."
Jason took the locator transmitter, examined it closely, and his brow furrowed. "Court of Owls...what exactly is that?"
He'd never heard of such a thing before. He'd been keeping up with Gotham's situation lately, and he did know of a supervillain named Bane, but he was dead. As for the Court of Owls… what was that?
"The Court of Owls? Child, I must tell you: it's a righteous organization that hates evil and kills the powerful and wealthy. This organization is incredibly powerful and full of talented people, with people from all directions flocking to it." Wang Baixi plopped back down on the bench, immediately crossed his legs, and revealed an inscrutable smile. "To be honest, I am the leader of this organization."
"Ha, here you are again." Zatana's face stiffened.
Just how much nonsense is this guy going to spout?
She did know one of the organizations he mentioned, the Justice League...
At that moment, Bruce and Tim suddenly came down the stairs. Bruce seemed a little more relaxed than when he went out, and his shoulders were no longer so tense.
"Barbara's condition is salvageable; we plan to transfer her to a cryo-chamber first. Besides that, I've also found traces of the Joker..."
Jason and the others all looked at Bruce, who had a calm expression, and heard him continue:
“The security system in Wayne Corporation’s warehouse just triggered an iris recognition failure alarm. Someone tried to unlock it using my iris information, but was stopped by the anti-tracking system. We have located… that person’s position.” Bruce’s eyes flickered slightly, but he didn’t even blink.
Chapter 144 Humanitarian Concern
Bruce put his headband back on, and once again, Bernie the Playboy transformed back into "Batman." He turned and walked towards the Batmobile, while Tim stood up from his computer, grabbed the cape draped over the back of his chair, and slung it over his shoulders, his steps light and steady.
The two stepped into the Batmobile's cockpit one after the other with an air of indifference, the engine roaring to life, the taillights casting two dark red streaks on the damp rock walls of the Batcave.
But just then, Damian rushed over from the training area, ran to the Batmobile, and slammed his fist on the door.
"Father! I want to go too!"
The Batmobile slid slowly forward, and a window rolled down a crack, through which Bruce's voice came: "You stay in the Batcave and help Alfred take care of Barbara."
"But"
The Batmobile had already accelerated into the tunnel leading to the ground, Damian's trailing echo swallowed by the engine noise. He stood there, like the pig-headed character in "I Belonged to You" who watched helplessly as the swallows flew away.
Jason Todd watched Damian's discomfiture and let out a low chuckle. "Your biological father has abandoned you again!"
Damian immediately turned around and made a very standard face at Jason Todd. "Jason Todd, are you trying to force me to say something even more hurtful?!"
"..."
……
Half an hour later, at Gotham Harbor.
The dark sea was bathed in yellow light from the rows of halogen lamps on the dock. A dozen containers were neatly arranged along the berth, with the blue container numbered GK-047 standing alone on the outermost edge of the yard.
Three police cars silently blocked the only access road to the berth. Gordon stood behind the cordon, repeatedly confirming the positions of all parties over the radio.
Armed police officers crouched behind the police car, their guns pointed at the only entrance and exit of the container.
A dockworker pushed his way through the police cordon, pointed at Gordon's chest, and yelled, "I don't care what you're doing, but this shipment has to be loaded onto the ship tonight! Even a one-day delay will incur penalties. Who's going to pay that? Your police station or the government?"
"I'm sorry, sir, the dock is under temporary control and all operations are suspended. Please step behind the cordon." Gordon explained patiently.
"Control? Just because of some dubious intelligence, you're going to shut down the entire dock? Have you police ever thought about us ordinary people?"
Don't label it as dangerous!
More and more dockworkers gathered around, and discontented murmurs surged from the back of the crowd to the front. Some began pushing against the police tape, while others took photos of the police with their phones.
Just as the foreman reached out to grab Gordon's collar...
A dark shadow plummeted from the top of the container yard.
Batman's cape unfurled fully in mid-air, like a black sail suddenly billowing in the wind. He landed on the open ground between the blue containers and the crowd, like a king in the darkness, naturally inspiring awe.
Night was falling; this was his city.
The dock fell silent instantly. The workers holding up their phones lowered their arms, those pushing the cordon line back to the back, and even the foreman who had been grabbing Gordon's collar instinctively took two steps back.
"Everyone back behind the cordon, we are going to arrest the criminals."
In an instant, the crowd began to retreat in an orderly fashion.
This is the majesty of Batman after his resurrection and defeat of Bane.
"Gordon, leave this to us..."
Gordon watched as Batman once again stole his mission and sighed helplessly, "Be careful."
Then, Tim walked around the side of the container and stopped half a step behind Batman. He glanced at the shipping label on the container door; the date and number had been scribbled over with marker.
"Batman, there's no wiring in the door crack. Shall we just break through?" Tim asked for instructions.
"A direct breakthrough."
Batman kicked open the container's metal door, and Tim reacted extremely quickly, slipping inside almost at the same moment the door popped open.
The interior of the container was revealed to everyone. In the center of the dimly lit space sat a rusty iron chair, with a young man strapped to it. He looked no more than a year or two older than Jason.
Tim and Batman deduced in that instant that the Batman suit he was wearing was a cheap knock-off bought online, and the bat symbol on his chest was a plastic patch with the edges already peeling off.
His mouth was covered with silver tape, tears lingered in the corners of his eyes, and he was trembling uncontrollably.
This was because his chest was covered with explosives.
The red light on the wire flashed rhythmically on the young man's chest, and the numbers on the timer were ticking away second by second.
05: 47.
05: 46.
"Gordon!! Push the cordon back a hundred meters." Batman frowned, gave the order without turning his head, and strode into the container.
"Damn it, the Joker isn't here."
Tim glanced around to make sure there were no other heat signals inside the container, then nodded to Batman: "I'll stay outside and keep an eye on the crowd at the dock. The Joker is probably still nearby; he loves to mingle in the crowds and watch the show he's putting on."
“Go ahead,” Batman agreed, also for Tim’s safety.
After saying that, Tim quickly got out of the container.
Batman crouched down in front of the young man and, with a complicated expression, tore off the duct tape from his mouth.
A young man's voice immediately rang out: "I knew you'd come! I knew it! God, you look exactly like the photos in the news! I wore this shirt just to take a picture with you, I never imagined it would turn out like this!"
"Don't move, and don't look down at your chest. Just look at me," Batman said.
He has never known how to handle these kinds of situations. If it were Superman, he would definitely be able to handle it with ease. He always has a smile on his face and brings hope to people. But he is just a mean-spirited, mysterious cloaked man.
The young man obediently raised his eyes and looked at Batman.
The timer jumped to 04:55.
Batman took a miniature screwdriver and a pair of needle-nose pliers from his belt and began to remove the first layer of screws from the bomb's casing.
"What's your name?" Batman asked.
If Superman were here, this is what he would ask.
“My name is… Jason. Jason Budd. I’m twenty years old and I study at Gotham University. To be honest, I thought I would become a police officer in the future, but what happened today almost scared me to death.” Perhaps he was too nervous, because everything came out of his mouth.
Jason?
Batman's heart skipped a beat.
Damn, what a twisted sense of humor.
He had never at any moment approved of Wang Baixi's decision to kill the clown.
“Okay, Jason.” Batman removed the first layer of his outer shell, revealing a dense network of wires underneath. “Have you seen the Joker?”
"I...I didn't, but one of my cousins saw him. It must have been the day Bane and you fought at the Cavaliers Stadium. Didn't the Joker show up on the street? He was in that area."
"As for me, I've never seen a clown before. Before I was kidnapped, I attended a masquerade ball. When I was walking back to my dorm from the masquerade ball, passing through an alley next to University Road, someone hit me on the head from behind. When I woke up, I was already tied up here."
Batman used pliers to clamp a red wire, noting down this information as he worked methodically.
The red, blue, and green wires were clamped and cut in sequence.
The timer continues to tick: 02:20.
“God, only two minutes left…” Jason Bud’s breathing quickened. His eyes filled with tears, and Batman’s silhouette blurred into a black shadow. “Batman… can you give me an answer? Do you think I’ll be alive to see my parents again after today?”
Batman paused for a moment with his pliers, so briefly that Jason Budd didn't even notice.
“Yes,” he said.
It definitely can.
The timer jumped to 01:05.
Batman's movements began to quicken.
00: 42.
00: 33.
00: 19.
Jason Budd closed his eyes, tears rolling down his cheeks and dripping onto the plastic bat emblem on his chest.
00: 06.
00: 05.
00: 04.
00:03
With a click, the timer stopped at 00:02.
All the wires were removed, and all the detonators were taken out. Batman peeled the last piece of explosive from Jason Bud's chest and sealed it, along with the timer, into his blast bag.
Jason Budd slowly opened his eyes, looked down at his chest that was no longer shimmering, and burst into tears.
Batman placed his hand on his shoulder, waiting for him to finish crying out his initial emotional breakdown before speaking again: "Where exactly is that alley you mentioned? Is there a convenience store nearby?"
“Yes, there’s a 24-hour convenience store right at the alley entrance,” Jason Budd said, sniffling.
