Chapter 143 An Organization of Justice
Batman raised his hand and removed his mask, revealing a tired but still resolute face. He then opened the door. Since Jason was unwilling to go out, he would let the people outside hear their conversation.
He stared at Jason without saying a word, and Jason stared back at him. The ticking of the medical equipment filled the silence of the ward. At the same moment, Barbara's breathing became more even, no longer as intermittent as before.
Jason looked away, peering through the glass wall of the medical room at the group of people outside. He saw Zatana leaning against the control panel, arms crossed, whispering something to Cassandra; Tim sat in front of the computer, and Jason guessed that the screen in front of the new Robin was probably displaying data she couldn't understand.
Wang Baixi, whom he was somewhat more familiar with but had only met once or twice, was half-reclined on the bench with one leg crossed over the other, looking incredibly relaxed.
He didn't know many of these people, and he thought he might feel better staying in the medical room.
He lowered his head unconsciously, and after a long while, he slowly spoke: "Bruce, what do you want to talk to me about?"
Bruce took two steps forward and sat down on the empty hospital bed opposite Jason.
“Jason, I hope you stay, at least for the next few days at Wayne Manor. Once Barbara’s condition stabilizes and the Joker’s matter is resolved, I won’t stop you from leaving if you wish.”
Jason didn't reply, he just pursed his lips.
“You’re right, I didn’t go looking for you, Jason.” Bruce looked at him, his voice steady, without a hint of trying to excuse himself. “I should have checked on your whereabouts sooner, and I should have discovered sooner that the League of Assassins was lying to me. I know it’s no use saying anything now, but this is my problem, and I won’t push it onto anyone else.”
Jason's fingers curled up on his knees.
Bruce stood up, walked to the glass wall, and looked at the people outside.
“Let me introduce them to you. The one sitting in front of the computer is Tim Drake, now Robin. He came to us on his own. He figured out my and Dick’s true identities through deduction.”
“A detective just like you, isn’t he?” Jason sarcastically remarked. “Sounds good. Dick is a genius circus boy, Drake is a genius detective, and me? I’m a genius thief! I only steal your car wheels!”
“…Jason, calm down,” Bruce paused, unsure how to respond. “After you left, I didn’t want any more Robins. But Tim convinced me. He said Batman needs a Robin, otherwise I’ll get lost in anger and obsession and become someone I don’t even recognize.”
Tim must have heard Bruce mention him, because he looked up at the medical room and then waved.
"Come here for a second, Tim," Bruce called out.
"Here you are." Tim stood up from his computer, strode into the medical room, and stopped at the door.
Tim nodded to Jason, his attitude neither distant nor overly warm: "Jason, I know you may not like seeing me in this uniform. But I want you to understand one thing: I became Robin voluntarily. No one forced me, and no one replaced you with the identity of Robin. Bruce was in a terrible state at the time."
Jason deliberately avoided Tim, his gaze falling on the IV tubing beside Barbara's bed.
Is it bad? Heh, what's the reason?
Tim didn't care when Jason didn't reply. After finishing his sentence, he turned and walked out, then sat back down at his computer to continue his data analysis that had been interrupted.
“That Chinese girl is Cassandra Cain,” Bruce continued. “She’s the daughter of David Cain and Ms. Shiva. She came to Gotham to escape the fate her parents had set for her. There’s also Wang Baixi and Zatana. You’ve already met Wang Baixi, and Zatana is my friend. You should have met her when you were in the Justice League, when Wonder Woman and the others were fighting side by side.”
Jason finally raised his head, his gaze passing through the glass wall and settling on each of the people in turn.
He knew, of course, that Bruce wasn't the type to actively recruit soldiers, and that these people who were in the Batcave must have each experienced stories that were no simpler than his own.
But this did nothing to make him feel any better.
He scoffed, "Fine, the staff is more than double what it was when I left. So how do you plan to catch the remaining clown?"
“Laughing Guy got my iris information.” Bruce walked back to Jason.
"Oh, so it sounds like you got tricked by him?" Jason was actually a little gloating.
"Yes, the clown hid an iris scanner on the airship's control panel, and he collected my data when I stopped the self-destruct program."
"My iris information can be used to bypass the security system in the core area of Wayne Group's headquarters, and it can also be used to unlock encrypted files that I store on the group's internal servers."
"No matter what the Joker intends to do with it, he will definitely touch Wayne Enterprises' core facilities."
“I had already had the company’s security team and Lucius set up an anti-tracking system in advance. As long as someone uses my iris information to swipe a card at any facility, the system will immediately lock their location.”
Outside, Wang Baixi could clearly hear Batman's discussion, and he was filled with mixed emotions.
The Joker is an interesting character. He always says he's not interested in Batman's true identity, but what's the reality?
He was just afraid that Batman would stop playing hide-and-seek with him once he took off his mask.
Even so, he would still use Batman's true identity to do bad things, such as stealing his money. Batman and Bruce Wayne are ultimately inseparable.
Jason listened to Bruce's proposal and slowly nodded.
"You really are a master strategist; you can arrange everything no matter what happens," Jason quipped.
“Not as insightful as yours, Jason,” Bruce replied.
"Alright, you two have had enough. If you keep going on like this, I'm not going to try to mediate!" Wang Baixi's voice drifted over again.
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps came from the stairs leading to the manor. Damian rushed into the Bat Cave and started shouting before he could even get his feet on the ground.
"Father! I've looked at the map! The Laughing Swordsman is definitely hiding in the eastern part of the old town!"
Bruce took a deep breath and turned around: "Why are you still in the Batcave? Didn't I tell Alfred to take you to bed?"
“It’s evening now!” Damian said matter-of-factly.
Bruce glanced at his watch, paused for a moment, and decided to give up on arguing with Damian about this topic. He said to Jason, "I'll go and deal with Barbara's matter with Tim first. You stay here and don't move around."
They need to ask Mr. Freeze to help.
Jason reluctantly hummed in agreement, then called out to Bruce, who had already turned around.
"Wait a minute. You still haven't told me how you knew my location?"
Bruce's lips twitched slightly: "It's a secret."
He strode out of the medical room.
……
Wang Baixi noticed that Jason was staring at her.
To be precise, Jason's gaze pierced through the glass wall of the medical room and landed squarely on his face. Wang Baixi subconsciously shifted to the other side of the bench, and Jason's gaze followed.
Oh no, he simply walked out of the medical room. He even closed the door behind him so no one would disturb Barbara.
He stood in front of Wang Baixi, looking down at the calm-faced Wang Baixi.
"Don't look at me like that. Can't you be a little more peaceful?" Wang Baixi decided to confront the situation head-on.
"Do I look fierce?" Jason asked back.
“You can’t even say ‘looks like it,’ you are inherently fierce.”
Damian suddenly appeared out of nowhere and grabbed Wang Baixi's sleeve.
"What are you guys talking about? I want to join in too!"
Wang Baixi glanced at him, then looked up and called out towards the control panel, "Cassandra, can you take this child away?"
"Hey!" Before Damian could even voice his protest, Cassandra had already walked over from the side. Without a word, she grabbed Damian by the back of his collar and dragged him toward the training area like a disobedient kitten.
"Let me go! Let me go, do you hear me! You!"
“Go…do combat training,” Cassandra said curtly. “You…don’t you want to be Robin?”
Damian's protests gradually subsided over the training area. Wang Baixi breathed a sigh of relief and met Jason's gaze again.
"Alright, now that there's no one else around, you can say whatever you want."
“I’d like to know how Bruce could have agreed to you wearing Batman’s clothes.” Jason’s voice wasn’t loud, but his tone was very certain.
"He probably admires my personal charm," Wang Baixi replied shamelessly.
“Your charisma?” Jason tilted his head. “Seriously.”
“Your Majesty, you should be more humble,” Zatana said with a smile from not far away.
“Okay, I really don’t have much personal charm.” Wang Baixi sighed and stood up. “Then why do you think that is?”
“I think it’s your resurrection spell, right?” Jason frowned.
Wang Baixi's tone was frank and open: "That's right, only I in this world can do this. Bruce needs me precisely because I have this power!"
Jason suddenly said, “I’ve been back from hell, I’ve even been a ferryman on the River Styx, I’ve seen the real dead. So I know very well that resurrection isn’t something an ordinary person can do.” (Trinity: Wonder Woman’s Daughter, Issue 6)
"But didn't you also come back to life?"
“Yes, I was resurrected, but I wasn’t brought back to life by a resurrection spell.” Jason shook his head. “My resurrection was sudden; I crawled out of my grave myself. To this day, I still don’t understand why. But you’re different…”
"uh-huh?"
What exactly is this guy trying to say?
Jason said somberly, “A person who can resurrect the dead, no matter how kind he is, his very existence will disrupt the balance of the world. I believe you are always a… scourge. Forgive me for using that word to describe you.”
Wang Baixi gave a bitter smile.
I feel like I've been subjected to unwarranted malice.
Seeing this, Zatana stood up and walked to Wang Baixi's side, crossing her arms and looking at Jason.
“Jason, you don’t need to be so aggressive towards Wang Baixi. Even Superman has already acknowledged him,” Zatana said calmly.
"Superman? Are you kidding me?" Jason squinted, looking at Wang Baixi in disbelief. "You've joined the Justice League?"
When he was Robin, he only joined the Teen Titans! And he didn't even stay there for very long!
Of course, his time as Robin was short enough!
This guy joined the Justice League after only a short time! He must have gotten in through connections!
"To be precise, I'm still in the observation period."
Zatana added, "And I was his examiner."
Jason glanced at Zatanna, paced back and forth a couple of times, hands on his hips, and suddenly laughed: "Very good, very good. The resurrected Easterner not only killed the Joker, but is now preparing to join the Justice League. I really had no idea when Bruce Wayne's tolerance for someone had soared to this level."
"Calm down, Jason. Why are you so serious?" Wang Baixi didn't realize that Jason was even more unable to calm down after he said that, especially the second half of his sentence, which was giving Jason PTSD.
"First, the clown I killed was a clown, the murderer who killed you. You should thank me for avenging you. Second, at least half of what you just said sounded like you were jealous."
"Jealous?" Jason raised his eyebrows.
“Isn’t that right?” Wang Baixi gave a less-than-pleasant smile. “I completely understand that you’re resentful about Bruce finding a new Robin, and that you’re hostile towards everyone who comes along. But understanding is one thing, you can’t use me as a punching bag. I’m not your replacement, nor am I a tool that Bruce just picked up. I’m his partner.”
As Wang Baixi spoke, he took out a small black cube from his pocket, on which several broken wires were soldered.
"Of course, I'm not like Bruce. Do you want to know how we found you?"
After he finished speaking, Jason looked at him curiously.
