A vicious elbow strike landed on Li Cheng's chin, sending him flying. Before he could get up, Kuntai's relentless pursuit arrived like a whirlwind. Li Cheng rolled haphazardly across the dusty ground, defending and taking hits. But in a split second, he caught Kuntai's kick, pulling him to the ground. Then, he pounced on him, and the two men tumbled together on the ground, exchanging fierce punches and kicks.

Li Cheng's physical advantage finally became apparent in this aesthetically unappealing ground grappling. Although Kuntai's legwork was superb, and his explosive power and endurance were no less than Li Cheng's, he was ultimately a head shorter than Li Cheng and his muscle mass was inevitably insufficient. Unable to utilize his leg strength, and in the completely close-quarters brute force combat, he was quickly hit by several heavy punches from Li Cheng, leaving him with a bruised and swollen face, blood splattering everywhere.

In a one-on-one fight, Kuntai would undoubtedly have lost by now. However, several cult elites remained in the basement. Although they couldn't defeat Li Cheng alone, they had been hiding and waiting for the right opportunity. Now that Li Cheng and Kuntai were locked in combat, they quickly appeared. One of them rushed forward and grabbed Li Cheng by the neck, while the others went to pry open his arms and legs.

The sudden assistance instantly shattered Li Cheng's control over Kuntai. With a flying kick, Kuntai sent Li Cheng flying from one end of the house, rolling to the other side of the corner. But Li Cheng immediately got up and roared back.

"Stop him! I'll take that monster with me!"

Kuntai shouted and ran into the dust and smoke. The cultists charged at Li Cheng, only to be swiftly and decisively killed on the spot by the almost crazed Li Cheng. Li Cheng ran with all his might, through the billowing dust, through the dark passageway, and past a pitted, obviously privately dug hole. Finally, he saw light ahead. Passing through a hidden passage, he saw Kuntai carrying the unconscious girl, getting into a white van. Seven or eight cultists stood beside the van, armed, clearly there to stop him.

"Do not!!!"

Roaring, Li Cheng charged forward amidst the flying bullets. Covering his face, ignoring the bloody welts left by the bullets, he plunged into the crowd, quickly felling all the cult members. Then, he gave chase with all his might, chasing the car that was receding into the distance, chasing until his lungs felt like they were about to explode, his heart pounding with unbearable pain, yet he could only watch the car disappear into the distance.

No, no, this can't be done, this can't be done...

My chest is about to break, my legs are about to break, I can't move, I can't go on... But she's in there, she's ahead of me. I can't, I can't stop, at least not now, I absolutely can't stop!

In a daze, exhausted, Li Cheng collapsed to the ground. He gasped for breath, his body trembling, blood seeping through his skin and clothes, dripping down like sweat. He finally managed to stand up, though his whole body was still shaking, but the car was almost out of sight.

Ah, yet another wave of despair...

With a screech of brakes, a black luxury sedan sped out from beside Li Cheng and came to a sudden stop, kicking up a cloud of choking dust that danced in the wind.

The car window rolled down, and Kiritsugu Emiya's cold, stern face appeared inside. He looked expressionlessly at the disheveled Li Cheng, then pointed bluntly to the back seat and said:

"Get in the car, quick!"

Second update complete. Third update... well, I'll do my best. No need to wait for it.

Here comes the book recommendation:

Welcome to Gensokyo

There must be something wrong with my head if I pursued realism in a fictional story.

Well, welcome to Gensokyo without you.

Live your life as a human being, even if it's difficult, to the fullest...

P.S.: This is a Touhou fanfiction set in Nara, Heian, and the era before Gensokyo. It won't focus too much on the fantasy girls; it's just a story set in a Touhou context (a bit of a societal rant). There are occasional crossovers from other anime! (The internal timeline of this book doesn't perfectly match the actual era of the characters; I apologize for this inaccuracy...)

Section 17, Chapter Sixteen: The Pursuit of Fireworks

At dawn, just as the first rays of sunlight rise above the horizon.

Just moments before, this bustling metropolis lifted its twelve-hour citywide lockdown and restored normal traffic order. Although it was still early, the roads were already bustling with activity, with many vehicles shuttling back and forth.

But at that moment, an unusual sound broke the order of the scene.

Those were two vehicles speeding along the road, a sedan and a van, far exceeding the speed limit.

Traffic was immediately thrown into severe congestion as the two vehicles weaved through the traffic, virtually paralyzing the entire road. Then, a loud gunshot rang out from behind, igniting complete panic among the crowd.

"Bang! Bang! Bang—"

As Kiritsugu Emiya drove, he freed one hand to draw his pistol and fired forward. The bullets struck the van's tires, producing sparks and a metallic clanging sound. Several shots followed, but the tires showed no sign of deformation.

Was it enhanced with magic beforehand? Tsk, it seems this car is the last resort for these cultists.

Somewhat disappointed, he sheathed his pistol, glanced at Li Cheng in the rearview mirror as he pulled bullets from his body, and couldn't help but ask:

"Can you still hold on, Cheng?"

“No problem,” Li Cheng said calmly, pulling a bullet lodged in his arm muscle. “This kind of minor injury won’t affect my combat ability. To penetrate my flesh and injure me with a gun, it would have to be at extremely close range, or it would have to be a high-penetration weapon. At least for now, it seems they don’t have that kind of weapon.”

Kiritsugu Emiya remained silent, swerving the steering wheel to avoid an oncoming truck and closing the distance to the van once more. A cultist, gun in hand, leaned out of the van's window and fired at Li Cheng's vehicle, only to be instantly killed by Kiritsugu's quick reflexes, who shot him in the head. The body tumbled from the van, rolled a dozen times, and was then run over in three pieces by a passing car that couldn't stop in time.

Even so, the enemy still fired a burst of bullets, easily shattering the car's windshield. If Kiritsugu Emiya hadn't dodged in time, he would have been shot as well.

"Wasn't your car originally bulletproof?"

Li Cheng looked surprised.

"Do I look like a SWAT agent with an armored car?" Kiritsugu Emiya jerked the steering wheel, making a sharp turn, and drew his gun, accurately shooting into the other car window that hadn't been closed in time, splattering blood and flesh. "This isn't mine, it's my wife's car."

Gun barrels emerged from the car window, firing wildly at the sedan. Kiritsugu Emiya dodged quickly, but still managed to leave a series of bullet holes on the side of the car.

"Your wife's car? Does Irisviel know you've messed up her car like this?" Li Cheng asked with some surprise, while holding tightly against the car roof to prevent himself from shaking too much.

“It’s alright.” Emiya Kiritsugu pulled an extremely large pistol from the roof of the car, aimed it at the van, and pulled the trigger. With a loud bang like a cannonball, the van, which had been impossible to leave a mark, was finally cracked. The entire vehicle slid on the road after the heavy blow and was completely out of control.

Kiritsugu Emiya immediately lowered his gun, slightly shaking his wrist; clearly, the shot had also caused him considerable injury. Only then did he continue his earlier statement, saying, "Irisviel will understand me."

I don't think your car-obsessed, speeding husband would really understand you!

"Hold on tight, we're about to move over!"

The van was still struggling to regain control and had no time to attack them. This was a perfect opportunity, and Kiritsugu Emiya immediately sped up, approaching the swaying van.

Li Cheng then opened the car door, jumped up, and landed directly on the roof.

Standing on the roof of a moving car, especially one that was somewhat out of control, was no easy task. Li Cheng had to lie down to avoid being thrown off. But just as he regained his balance, he heard the sound of a car door being opened.

Then, Kuntai jumped directly from the side onto the roof of the car.

Just as he jumped up, the other person stomped on Li Cheng, who was lying on the roof. Li Cheng hurriedly dodged and was thrown off, instinctively grabbing the rearview mirror to avoid being thrown out. Kuntai on the roof tried to attack Li Cheng, but was hindered by the excessively swaying roof and could not get close. Emiya Kiritsugu from behind fired again, preventing Kuntai from getting close to Li Cheng.

Clutching the rearview mirror, Li Cheng hung himself on the side of the car. Through the car window, he could see the driver glaring at him with mad hatred in the driver's seat, and he could also see the girl sleeping soundly in the back seat.

Open it for me, you bastard!

Li Cheng roared and punched the glass again and again, but the specially treated car window could not be viewed in the usual way. Several powerful punches only resulted in a few large cracks.

The mere fact that the car had cracked was enough to make the driver inside look utterly horrified, as if he had seen a ghost.

A sharp pain suddenly shot through Li Cheng's hand, which was gripping the rearview mirror. He looked up and saw that Kuntai was already in front of him, stepping on his hand that was holding the mirror. Li Cheng's eyes widened in anger. He reached out and grabbed Kuntai, pulling him down with all his might. As a result, both of them lost their strength and tumbled off the car.

Kiritsugu Emiya, driving a car, sped up to meet them and narrowly caught the two, who were still wrestling and rolling around, with the windshield of his car.

Somewhat dizzy from the tumbling and rolling, Li Cheng was kicked onto the roof of the car by Kun Tai. Then, with a powerful leap, he jumped back onto the van in front of him.

"Cheng, can you still move!?"

While continuing to fire at the vehicle ahead, Emiya shouted a question.

"...It's still a long way off!"

Gritting his teeth, Li Cheng stood up again, leaping onto the hood of the car with a furious roar. Kuntai instinctively assumed a defensive stance, but instead of jumping directly onto the roof, he landed on the rear of the car. Before hitting the ground, he reached out and grabbed the car, pushing off with his feet, attempting to stop the car with his bare body.

"Ah ah ah ah ah--"

The purplish-blue veins bulged out of his skin, and his foot crushed the concrete surface, carving two deep furrows. Li Cheng roared, pulling the car in front of him with all his might. Through his efforts, he managed to gradually reduce the car's speed.

"Mr. Li Cheng, I have to admit, you're simply a madman."

Kuntai clung desperately to the roof of the car, staring in astonishment at Li Cheng's frantic actions, momentarily forgetting to stop him. Suddenly, a gunshot rang out like a shell exploding, and Kuntai, caught off guard, was struck hard, the impact sending him flying off the roof of the car.

The van, which was originally traveling at high speed, was brought to a complete stop by Li Cheng using the foot brake.

His arms and hands had turned a purplish-red color, the capillaries under his skin had burst from excessive exertion, and the heels of his shoes were worn through, with much of the skin and flesh also rubbed away. Li Cheng limped along, each step leaving a bloody footprint on the ground.

The last surviving cultist opened the car door, howling as he charged at Li Cheng, trying to fight him to the death. Li Cheng dodged his punch, then delivered a powerful backhand elbow to Li Cheng's chest, piercing through his clothes and causing Li Cheng to fall to the ground, convulsing and slowly dying.

Swaying, Li Cheng walked to the car door, slowly pulled it open, and dragged out and threw away the corpse of the cultist lying inside. Li Cheng's gaze lingered on the girl who was still sleeping peacefully in the car.

The girl was not sleeping soundly; her brow was furrowed, and she was curled up in a ball, looking rather pitiful. A ray of sunlight pierced through the clouds in the far distance of the sky, shining on the girl's long golden hair, making it sparkle like a star.

Li Cheng stood outside the car door, staring blankly at the girl inside. He remained there for a long while before finally realizing that he had found her.

A whooshing sound rang out, particularly jarring at that moment.

Behind him, Kiritsugu Emiya, who had just gotten out of the car, collapsed to the ground. Li Cheng turned around abruptly, and in another direction, he saw Kuntai clutching his bloodied left shoulder, looking disheveled but smiling happily at Li Cheng.

"Don't worry, I just threw in an anesthetic; he'll be fine. I did this simply so as not to interfere with what's coming next."

His face was beaming with joy, his happiness almost overflowing. Kuntai stared intently at Li Cheng's face, smiling and revealing a set of white teeth.

Li Cheng silently turned around to face Kuntai, his fists clenched so tightly they cracked.

"Yes, yes, that's it, Mr. Li Cheng, that's exactly what I wanted!"

Laughing loudly, Kuntai slightly raised his leg, also assuming an attacking stance.

"The mission has failed, so there's no need to worry about it. Now, it's my personal request, Mr. Li Cheng. Please, please, please, you must grant my request!"

Kuntai stared at Li Cheng as if possessed, his eyes filled with longing.

"Come on, fight me with all your might!"
