Chris had prepared a pair of sunglasses for himself before setting off; they were provided by Umbrella Corporation. They were similar to Wesker sunglasses, and having them would at least make the sunlight less glaring for Chris.
Jill, however, was not so lucky. She hadn't considered the conditions under the scorching sun, so she could only drink the last drop of water in her canteen during her journey. Although this made her feel a little better, it was only temporary, and she was temporarily out of water. She opened the lid of the canteen, turned it upside down, and shook it, hoping there would still be a few drops of water left in the empty canteen. Even though she knew there was no water in it, she still tried her luck.
“Mine. You can have it.” Alice took the full water bottle off her waist and handed it to Jill.
"No thanks, I can manage," Jill said awkwardly to Alice.
“No, I’m a new human. The T-virus can simulate the environment and adapt to hot climates. If you don’t drink, you’ll become mildly dehydrated, which will affect your ability to complete your mission.” Alice still smiled and gave Jill the water. Jill couldn’t refuse any longer.
"This is command post, this is Alfred. Calling B team, calling B team. Respond if you hear me, respond if you hear me, over." Alfred's voice came through Jill's walkie-talkie.
"Received, received. This is Jill, the leader of Squad B. Response, response, over." Jill reported calmly after hearing Alfred's words.
“You have reached five miles southwest of the Dubai Marsh. It is time to separate from Team A as planned. Over.” Alfred also ordered Jill.
"Understood, understood, all done." It was time to say goodbye again. Everyone said a brief farewell, and then Jill and Chris's team separated, and Team A and Team B separated.
Jill led her squad forward. As their leader, Jill was crucial to the mission's success.
Jill and Chris had already seen the general outline of the Dubai Marsh. They hoped that Leon and Claire were safe and sound so that they could come and rescue them. Jill and Chris prayed silently.
Alice noticed that Jill seemed troubled, and she understood the situation most likely, but she didn't say anything.
It must be said that the people here don't seem to welcome them. Although the area of Dubai has been occupied by 'Lost Light', the spread to more distant areas hasn't yet occurred, so there is still order here.
But the people in this city seemed hostile towards them; everyone's eyes were filled with anger, and they all avoided them. Some even ran away quickly upon seeing them, rushing back into their houses and closing their windows. There was certainly no racial discrimination here; perhaps outsiders weren't welcome. Maybe not, but meeting with their intelligence informant was the most important thing.
"Hey! Jill, I've spotted someone following us. Better be careful," team member Blake whispered to Jill without turning around.
“I noticed that too,” Jill replied with a nod.
"Never mind him for now, we'll talk about it after we meet up." They noticed a man wearing a large robe and a hood, but the hood was too big and long, and the distance was too great to see clearly, let alone make out his appearance. At first, no one in the crowd noticed him or could see him, but later Jill paid special attention to him. However, they still came to the conclusion that he seemed to have a purpose.
"Dubai Hotel! We've finally arrived." Alice said casually. The three of them entered the dilapidated little restaurant, where even the sign was crooked. There were three or four people scattered inside, and it was very unclean. The leftover food on the table hadn't been cleaned up, and the room was filled with the smell of moldy food and rotting wood. There were also many flies buzzing around, which was quite annoying.
At that moment, Blake said, "There's a scorpion on my shoe."
“They’ll bite you no matter how big or small they are. But you’re really lucky,” a Black player on the other side replied, standing up and walking up to them.
"Hello, the next step of the mission is on this memory card. Team B is ahead of you; they've already set off from here. Boss, I've sent you here to give you orders," the black man said calmly to Jill's team.
"Okay, thank you, we understand." Before Jill could finish speaking, the black man sent by Umbrella Corporation left through the back door without even saying his name.
As he left, he said to Jill, "Be careful on your mission. That place is very dangerous. Good luck."
"Is it dangerous? But we still have to go. Leon and Claire are there; we can't leave them unattended, especially Chris, who will definitely go. This mission must be completed perfectly no matter what. The company needs to surpass other organizations to maintain its current status. Right now, we need to improve the company's strength." Jill silently thought about some things regarding this mission.
Chapter 330 Ambush
Jill inserted the memory card into her miniature wrist computer, which displayed the mission location: "According to intelligence reports, there are traces of Lyon's team visiting the village to the west."
"The rest is just other mission information. This is the most useful one. Okay, let's head to the square." As Jill looked up from the computer, something strange happened. The group realized something was amiss: in less than ten minutes, the three or four people in the restaurant had all left, leaving only the ten of them. And that wasn't the strangest part—there wasn't a single person on the street.
"What's going on?" Blake, a member of the team, asked in surprise as they arrived at the village. The ten men stared intently through the door at the empty street. A gentle breeze swept the ground, raising a wisp of dust, which then blew scraps of paper into the air, causing the fruit stall stall across the street to creak. There were no birds in the trees; it was deathly silent.
"What on earth happened?" Blake repeated. Jill and Alice didn't answer; they certainly didn't know either, which was exactly what they wanted to ask. Something was definitely wrong here—no, a huge mess.
"Let's go out the back door to avoid any ambushes." So the others opened the back door and slipped out. Inside was a village alley, which was naturally deserted. Apart from their squad, there was a lot of garbage scattered outside the trash cans, and a wrecked truck that was just a shell. They had wanted to find the black intelligence agent, but he had already disappeared without a trace. Helpless, the group could only continue towards the village.
“We still need to contact Chris and the others,” Alice said, frowning.
“That’s right.” Jill immediately contacted Team B via radio. “Calling Team B, Team B, respond if you hear me, respond if you hear me. Over.” Jill quickly asked Chris.
"Buzz..." There was no answer. What's going on? Is it signal interference? After trying to make contact for a while without success, Jill gave up.
They emerged from the alley and headed south along the slum towards the village square. Their pursuers vanished without a trace. The mud-brick houses in the slum were typical Arabic architecture; the town was predominantly poor, as evidenced by the few tattered clothes hanging on the balconies of these two-story houses.
Just then, they heard a scream. "Over there," Jill and Alice said in unison. The sound came from an alley not far from them, and they roughly guessed that there was a reason for the villagers' disappearance. As they rounded the alley corner, a shocking and unwelcome scene unfolded: an African man wearing a black cloth robe and a headscarf was frantically biting a person with his back to him. It was clear that the scream had come from the mouth of the recently deceased man, a sign of parasite infection controlling its host.
"My God!" Saladin exclaimed in surprise, completely dumbfounded.
"Don't move, hands up!" The inexperienced Blake pointed his gun at the villager.
The man turned his head. A strange expression appeared on his blood-stained face, his eyes as red as blood, making it sound like he was babbling incoherently. Actually, this was understandable; the Plaka parasite had given these villagers, like the special individuals infected by the C-virus, abilities even more powerful than biological weapons.
Then it strode towards them, instantly biting one of the members, and the villager's parasites split off onto that member again.
"Stop, stop, I order you to stop..." Before Blake could finish speaking, Jill pulled the trigger on the M16.
'Rat-a-tat-tat…' The man infected with the parasite fell to the ground. "Hey! Don't shoot Jill indiscriminately, he's one of us," Blake reprimanded, clearly angered that Jill was about to kill the parasite-infected member of the squad.
"Were you sleeping during biohazard defense classes at the company?" Jill said casually. "Those villagers have been infected with the Plaka parasite!" said the member who had been implanted with the parasite. He struggled to stand up. Suddenly, they saw a horrifying scene. The member's mouth split open, revealing four tentacles covered in sharp teeth, making him look like a zombie from Resident Evil 5.
"Did you see that, you idiot!" Jill shouted angrily, raising her gun again and shooting, killing the guy.
Whether it was the man's shout or Jill's gunshot that triggered the shouts of the villagers around them, or perhaps they were already lying in ambush, it was unclear.
"This is bad. A fierce battle is inevitable. Everyone, get ready!" Jill said. Saladin, standing to the side, was dumbfounded. He had never seen anything like this before. Blake was more experienced than Saladin, but he was also at a loss in the face of the current situation. Now he could only listen to Jill. Alice, having fought countless battles, was no longer afraid of such dangers.
Jill changed her magazine. She saw that both men were frantic. The remaining men, unlike those two idiots, aimed their attacks at the villagers.
"What are you all standing there for? Run!" Jill said, and then ran back. At the same moment, several villagers appeared behind them, pointing at them and shouting, as if trying to tell the surrounding villagers their location, and rushed towards them like madmen.
Jill was right. They were infected by the "Praka parasite," which is very different from the T-virus. People infected with the T-virus become zombies, mindless, only knowing how to hunt, and slow-moving, among other shortcomings. The parasite, however, is different. Infected individuals retain some intelligence, can run, communicate with their own kind, and use melee or blunt weapons.
Saladin, running, glanced back and his legs cramped. Behind him were at least forty or fifty villagers, armed with axes, bottles, sticks, hoes, shovels, umbrellas—basically anything that could be used as a weapon. Waving their weapons and shouting incomprehensible gibberish, they chased after the nine men faster than mad dogs.
Everyone's eyes were bloodshot, except for two who were devastated and desperate. They were newcomers who had initially thought they could get something good in Africa. Now, that was impossible.
Although Blake was terrified and somewhat desperate, he was much calmer than Saladin. Jill and Alice, needless to say, had seen far more than this. At this moment, Jill was filled with questions: Where were Leon and Claire? The fact that an entire mutant squad had temporarily disappeared left Jill very puzzled.
The nine finally escaped the slum, but on the main street, it seemed that villagers were waiting for them, and about a hundred people had gathered. Fortunately, a ladder appeared not far ahead, leading to the roof. There were several dangerous intersections in the alley, and suddenly a rioting villager jumped out from one of them, so they had to be careful. Jill and Alice led the way, and the seven squads followed behind to cover the rear, firing their rifles at the infected villagers.
Jill and Alice never expected that their mission would be attacked; perhaps the 'Lost Light' organization was searching for something.
Chapter 331 Failed Reinforcements
Jill and Alice coordinated very well; Jill's assault rifle fire, combined with Alice's telekinesis, made them even more formidable. The remaining team members were also very experienced, and no one sustained any damage.
So, after a large number of villagers appeared, Jill and Alice climbed onto the roof, occupying the highest point. However, Jill and Alice's success didn't bring luck to the others. One member had only climbed halfway when a shocking and regrettable scene unfolded: a villager suddenly jumped out of a nearby window, knocked the member to the ground, and stabbed him in the left rib with scissors, causing blood to gush out. However, the member reacted instantly, pulling out a pistol and firing two shots into the villager's head. Alice and Jill saw this clearly from the roof. Jill was about to go down to rescue the member named Pete, but Pete, to prevent the approaching villagers from climbing onto the roof, struggled to sit up and knocked the ladder over. Mercenaries on missions in Africa typically wear relatively ordinary bulletproof vests, easily damaged by common weapons, while those at headquarters use high-tech protective suits.
"Before the villagers put up their ladders, I'll hold you up and get out of here quickly. Captain, for Umbrella's sake, do everything you can to complete this mission." After saying this, Pete began fighting with the villagers.
“No, we’re coming down to save you right away.” Jill crouched down, preparing to jump off the roof, when Pete did something that shocked Jill. He picked up a Desert Eagle pistol, pointed it at his head, and shouted, “I’m going to die sooner or later anyway. If you don’t leave, I’ll shoot you dead. Besides, the company’s mission is very important.”
His eyes, brimming with hope and trust, seemed to tell Jill, "As long as you get out of here alive, my death wasn't in vain." Seeing the blood just beginning to trickle from Pete's mouth, and seeing him nod to Jill and Alice, Jill's eyes welled up with tears. She gave Pete a solemn nod, and then they left, Jill consumed by endless self-reproach. This was arguably his mistake, causing Umbrella Corporation to lose some members.
Seeing Jill, Alice, and the others leave, Pete felt relieved and leaned against the wall with a smile. Then, holding a submachine gun in his left hand and a pistol in his right, he fired at the villagers less than five meters away, yelling, "You damned bastards, get back here! Umbrella will wipe you out one day!" Pete finally ran out of bullets. He detonated his only remaining grenade, Glorious, and perished along with the rioting parasitic villagers.
Hearing the distant explosion, Gil knew the gist of it. Saladin was expressionless; he had just met with the parasitic villagers and then witnessed the deaths of his team members. This had severely pushed Saladin to his mental limit. After several orders from Gil, he finally snapped out of his reverie. Umbrella Corporation selected mercenaries based on ability, so some exceptionally capable cowards also ended up at Umbrella.
"Command, command, this is Team A, Team A. Requesting backup, repeat, requesting backup, over." Jill quickly contacted Alfred via walkie-talkie.
"This is command post. This is Alfred. Team B has reported that reinforcements have already arrived. Please hold out until reinforcements arrive. Report your casualties, repeat. Reporting, over." Alfred quickly replied to Jill upon hearing about the reinforcements.
"Many of our people were wiped out by those mutated villagers. Now there are only 8 of us left. Over," Jill reported seriously after thinking for a moment.
“Fuck you, how could this happen? Hold on, the rescue helicopter is coming soon. Continue your mission. Once you get supplies and the tracker, get on the helicopter and return to base. I’ve sent the tracker to eliminate that villager infected with the parasite. And I don’t want you elites to disappear. The mission still needs you to complete it,” Alfred said seriously to Jill.
Alfred's actions are understandable. With some of Umbrella's elite forces dead, to preserve their strength and avoid unnecessary sacrifices, they had to send the Trackers. However, Jill wouldn't return easily; Leon and Claire were survivors from Raccoon City, and Jill wanted to rescue them as well.
Jill and her squad were temporarily out of danger, taking refuge in a small warehouse containing several bags of rice and crates of dried, smelly fruit. It was relatively safe inside; the shouts and cries of the parasite-infected villagers were quieter, and they could occasionally hear villagers passing by the windows. They could wait until the villagers moved to another location before leaving. Jill and her squad had plenty of ammunition, but it wasn't unlimited, so they had to use it sparingly. Therefore, Jill took out her short knife; melee weapons could be quite useful in certain situations.
Suddenly, a figure passed by the window and came to the door, trying to push it open and enter the house. Jill and Alice were already in ambush; the villagers had discovered them, making it truly impossible to guard against them. Finding the door locked, the villagers rammed it open and rushed inside. Jill was behind another wall of the warehouse, with Alice hiding behind her. Jill took a deep breath, then in a series of fluid movements, turned, grabbed her gun, and aimed, just as someone approached.
"Oh, so you're still alive." Jill rushed over to look at Deadpool, while Alice closed the door and checked to see if the villagers had noticed, thankfully they hadn't.
“Of course, that’s what I was going to say too, Jill,” Deadpool replied nonchalantly. Looking at Deadpool covered in blood, Alice asked疑惑地问道, “Is that your own blood?”
"No, it's the villagers' blood. I'm not injured. I have a healing ability even stronger than Wolverine's, but Team B is indeed in some danger." Then, Deadpool explained the situation with Leon. It turned out that after Leon was infected by the parasite, he was not controlled but instead controlled by the parasite in his arm, which gave him the ability to continue fighting. So, thanks to Leon and Deadpool's persistence, they have managed to get to where they are now.
As they were talking, the roar of helicopters seemed to echo outside. "Rescue is here! Let's go!" Alice shouted, and the team members rushed out of the warehouse. Jill pulled out a flare gun and fired a shot into the sky, even though it was daytime, it was meant to signal the helicopters.
"Squad A, I see you. Reinforcements are on their way," the helicopter pilot said over the radio. The squad headed toward the helicopter, and the villagers were also drawn to the enormous object in the sky.
But their joy was short-lived. Suddenly, they heard a whoosh from afar, and something flew through the air with a string trailing behind it. Jill knew what it was as soon as she saw it.
"RPG rockets! Get down!" The squad members immediately dropped to the ground, but the RPG rockets weren't aimed at them; they were coming from the reinforcement helicopters.
With a deafening roar, the plane was blown in two, the cockpit burst into flames, several crew members died instantly, and the wreckage plummeted to the ground trailing thick smoke.
"Mission accomplished! Strike against Umbrella Corporation reinforcements! Long live Hydra!" The Hydra member hidden in the room reported to Red Skull.
The villagers cheered with joy when they saw the enormous creature destroyed by their own people. The squad members took advantage of the villagers' cheers to escape the encirclement.
Chapter 332 Chainsaw Monster
The team members were lucky enough to escape the villagers' encirclement. They carefully navigated through the narrow alleys, with three people left behind to cover the rear. In order to find their target, they bought time for the others.
Jill and the others could hear each other's breathing and tried to keep their footsteps as quiet as possible. Fortunately, there were no villagers around because of the helicopter explosion and the team's rearguard action. Finally, Jill chose a small house, broke down the door, raised her gun, and surveyed the surroundings. Alice closed the door, then pushed it shut with all her might, securing it for a while. The fate of those left to fight was already sealed, so they continued their mission.
“Look! This is…” Jill exclaimed. Following Jill’s finger, Alice and Deadpool saw two corpses lying in the corner of the house. The corpses were wearing combat uniforms and had the Umbrella symbol tattooed on their shoulders.
“They’re scouts from Team A! I’ve seen them before!” Jill said with absolute certainty. Alice went over to check the situation. The two men had multiple stab wounds, each one potentially fatal. Alice deduced that the two scouts had been forced into this place by the villagers, killed, and then the villagers, seeing them dead, left to find their next target.
“Check if they have any weapons,” Alice said seriously. Jill searched for weapons and found six magazines of pistol ammunition, two M16s, plus the five magazines of ammunition already in the M16s, and a long-barreled grenade launcher that could only load one round at a time, but it only contained one 40mm grenade.
"It seems they didn't last long; they didn't even use up all that ammunition." After Alice finished speaking, she thought of the helicopter crash earlier. It was possible that someone had deliberately attacked the Umbrella Corporation. Currently, it seems that Hydra might be the one who destroyed the helicopter.
Jill and Alice calmly sat down. Deadpool remained unconcerned; as a mutant, he possessed immortality and was essentially immune to harm. Deadpool's presence here was on Tang Tianye's orders. Recently, as he was about to leave, Tang Tianye had dispatched members of the Watchmen to various regions to assist him with certain tasks, so Deadpool's arrival in Africa wasn't surprising.
The Watchmen were the first superhero organization established by Tang Tian, and they've been around for decades, even predating the Justice League. Therefore, aside from being slightly stronger, the Justice League isn't significantly more powerful or well-developed than the Watchmen.
Although the situation seemed dangerous, Jill's fearless and determined gaze told everyone that there was only one way out: to find Chris. Jill believed they would find them. Deadpool nodded to Jill. Although the team members didn't say anything, they all understood each other's meaning.
Suddenly Alice heard shouts outside the window, and a thought struck her as odd. It couldn't be that they'd been discovered. Jill quickly went to the window to see what was going on. The window faced the central square, and the villagers hadn't noticed them. Jill assumed they were holding a large gathering in the square, brandishing weapons and shouting wildly.
Almost everyone in the village had arrived. They were gathered around a large platform, on which sat a middle-aged man in a strange coat, seemingly watching them silently. Further in, four large crosses bound four people. Jill broke out in a cold sweat upon seeing this, and Alice stammered, "That's... Chris." Alice exclaimed.
The man bound to the cross was Chris; he was badly beaten, having received the Superman serum after the Raccoon City incident. However, Chris was still struggling desperately on the cross. The rest of the people were unfamiliar to Jill; the parasite-infected villagers were muttering something unintelligible, their voices drowning out his, seemingly cursing the villagers. The other two were unfamiliar, but their combat uniforms identified them as members of Team A.
"Oh my god! We need to save them!" Alice exclaimed, about to use her telekinesis to break the window and jump out to rescue the four. But Jill stopped her, shaking her head. Alice understood; it was pointless. They couldn't save Chris. This wasn't cowardice. The three of them were facing eight or nine hundred parasitic villagers; they couldn't make a futile sacrifice. Alice helplessly held onto the window, watching what would happen next.
The creatures infected by the Plaka parasite are called "Magini," a name that describes these creatures as capable of using weapons. These parasite villagers possess considerable intelligence, and the parasites are also important to Tang Tian's other plans.
This incident reminded Sheva of the time she and Chris were on a mission in Africa, when Leonard was executed by the locals and she and Chris were unable to save them. Would this time be the same?
Just then, the village chief stopped dancing and began speaking to the villagers from the platform, his movements resembling those of a fanatical believer. The villagers below cheered, shouted, and waved their weapons. The village chief, seemingly performing some kind of ritual, beckoned downwards. At that moment, they seemed to hear the roar of a chainsaw, and a large man carrying a chain saw walked onto the platform.
"Chainsaw Man!" Jill exclaimed in surprise. Chainsaw Man was a terrifying and troublesome creature, a truly ruthless executioner. Leon first encountered him during a mission in Africa, where both Jill and Chris fought against them. The Chainsaw Monster was also quite powerful, appearing in the movie *Resident Evil 5* and the game.
The chainsaw monster was no different from before; it still covered its face with a sack, with two holes for its eyes, obscuring its appearance. However, it also wore a helmet over the sack, seemingly a medieval Crusader helmet. Strangely, it was also clad in plate armor, the most protective armor of the medieval era. The chainsaw monster was difficult to kill with an assault rifle, requiring at least seven or eight shots, let alone a pistol, a weapon that had little effect on it. Already invincible, coupled with its heavy armor, it was left with no choice but to utilize Umbrella Corporation's advanced technology.
