If he cannot prove his worth, he will only be able to watch the water dispenser in the club in the future. He will not be able to get the lucrative tasks, but will only be able to receive basic subsidies and do things like finding cats to fix streetlights and cleaning sewers.

Thinking of this, his gaze became even more resolute. Hehuan was startled, but when she remembered that the young man would occasionally show such an expression on the court when she was observing him, she couldn't help but smile.

After confirming the time with Hehuan, he let him leave. Lin Jiade went out, took a deep breath, first contacted his good brothers to tell them he was going home, and then he dialed Jasmine's number.

"it's me."

Jasmine's voice sounded hazy, as if she had just woken up from a dream. Lin Jiade said apologetically, "I have something to do tonight, so I can't tutor you."

"Yes, I'm going out tonight too."

"What a coincidence? Then come to my house for tutoring tomorrow afternoon, and we can have dinner together afterward."

Lin Jiade's emotional intelligence seemed to have vanished. He didn't realize that he had only spoken to Jasmine for eight days before inviting her to his home for dinner, which was far too enthusiastic.

Fortunately, Jasmine wasn't entirely unreasonable. After thinking for a moment, she nodded and agreed, "I'll do rehabilitation first, then make up for the missed lessons. I'll try to get up at one o'clock in the afternoon."

"Excuse me, what time did you go to sleep last night?"

"4:30 a.m.

"You should change your sleep schedule. Go to bed at midnight and wake up at eight. Try to work towards that for now... Uh, I'm not saying you have to do it exactly as I say, this is just a suggestion."

"I understand," Jasmine replied calmly.

She hung up the phone. Lin Jiade was in a good mood. Jasmine looked aloof, but she was a good cat who listened to advice. Once you climbed over the high wall she used to protect herself and stepped into the courtyard, you would find that she was actually not difficult to get along with, and could even be described as well-behaved.

As for Du Juan... Lin Jiade grinned foolishly at his own shadow. She brought joy to his life, but he knew nothing about her.

After he got home, he told Dujuan about joining the club again. Dujuan thought for a moment and said, "You'd better be mentally prepared."

"How to say?"

"Although you have become one of us, others have been planned and cultivated step by step since birth, with the goal of entering the system, or at the very least, being peripheral members. As a group that enjoys the benefits, they have a high degree of identification with the system."

You joined the industry after graduating from university; before that, you were just an ordinary person, so your perspectives might differ on some matters.

Lin Jiade nodded: "I know, so I will try my best to cooperate with them."

"No cooperation is needed. As long as it doesn't involve matters of principle or danger, you can speak freely."

Du Juan laughed and said, "You're terrible at lying. You even cover up things you've done right, so other people will think you're hiding something."

"Row."

Du Juan added, "Don't reveal my existence; they probably don't know I'm behind you yet."

"Ok."

"Finally, don't take them and their associations too seriously. After all, researchers who possess first-level magic receive comprehensive and intensive education at specialized universities."

"At the same age, the gap between you amateur enthusiasts and professional magic researchers is probably greater than the gap between your soccer skills and those of the biology-based soccer king."

Lin Jiade glared at Du Juan: "You still want to humiliate me at a time like this?"

Du Juan put on a forlorn expression: "I thought our relationship was close enough for us to joke like this. Did I presume to think we'd gotten closer? I'm sorry."

If it weren't for her voice sounding so fake, like a female character from an animated film, Lin Jiade would have believed it was her true feelings.

To test the potion's effects, he took it out and applied it to his eyelids. A few seconds later, when he saw the pale pink glow emanating from the cuckoo, he nodded in satisfaction.

Lin Jiade tidied himself up, ate dinner, and then gave his body 40 minutes to digest before setting off with the potion. As he went downstairs, he saw Jasmine holding a cane and smiled, "What a coincidence."

"You're going out at this hour too?"

"Yes, something's up."

Lin Jiade and Jasmine went together. He had already contacted senior student Hehuan beforehand. The club's vehicle was parked at the entrance of the community. From a distance, he saw the passenger window of the Bao 4 series car parked at the entrance of the community roll down, and senior student Hehuan waved to him.

I thought it was the Audi A5, since it's quite reliable.

He turned to Jasmine and said, "Be careful on the road, I'm leaving now."

Jasmine nodded. Lin Jiade stopped matching her pace and took a few steps forward. He looked back at Jasmine, who was also moving towards the Bao 4 series. Their eyes met, and they both understood something.

Lin Jiade looked at Jasmine: "The alien race that will assist us?"

Jasmine looked at Lin Jiade: "A newcomer who slipped through the net?"

The world is big, yet small. Lin Jiade never expected that his second part-time job would once again be connected with Jasmine. Perhaps this is fate.

The senior student Hehuan, who was about to introduce them, asked curiously, "You know each other?"

“My neighbor, I’m currently her tutor,” Lin Jiade said.

Hehuan looked them up and down, smiled, and said, "That's great. Get in the car, I'll tell you about today's mission on the way."

Lin Jiade and Jasmine sat in the back seat. The driver started the car, and Hehuan introduced to Lin Jiade, "This is Kapok, who possesses second-class magic and is the combat force of our club."

"No, the real fighting force is the woman in the back seat. Without her backing us up, we wouldn't get any jobs investigating economic crimes," Mu Mian replied.

Kapok wore a full-face helmet, her voice was muffled and difficult to distinguish as male or female, and her body was covered by a bodysuit that looked like a rubber suit, with a smooth surface and no outline that could be used to identify her sex.

Judging from her physique, Mu Mian's height is probably between 163 cm and 165 cm, which is similar to that of a normal woman or a short man.

Lin Jiade saw a sword lying next to the driver's seat, which he guessed was Mu Mian's weapon, since He Huan only possessed a third-level magic and had no combat power.

After they set off, another car quickly followed. Hehuan glanced at it and said, "It's Fuxing University of Science and Technology. They're ranked second in District 18. They're recruiting magic researchers and are our competitors."

“Eight magic researchers were dispatched to assist the police in investigating economic crimes…” Lin Jiade said.

"The risk is not high."

Kapok's muffled voice came from inside the helmet, "Our mission is to act as a reserve force in the capture operation, to identify the humans and aliens among the capture personnel, and to find evidence of their illegal use of magic for profit."

The police can also handle these tasks, but they usually only show us the basics, allowing us outsiders to get experience and learn how to cooperate with the police.

Chapter Thirty-Eight: Arrest

Lin Jiade glanced at Jasmine and noticed that she was staring blankly at a math problem. He leaned forward, tilting towards Jasmine. Jasmine glanced at him and continued to ponder the problem on the screen.

“There’s a mistake here,” Lin Jiade said. “Go back to your derivation process and see if you’ve filled in any math errors.”

Lin Chia-te was among the last high school students to use paper exam papers. Since then, from elementary school to university, textbooks and exam papers have been digitized—except for the semester-end exams and the college entrance exam, which retain paper exam papers to enhance the sense of ritual.

Hehuan and Mumian exchanged a glance. Mumian seemed about to say something, but Hehuan shook her head, letting the humans and aliens in the back seat do their homework to their hearts' content.

Upon arriving at the destination, Lin Jiade discovered that just one street away was Fuxing International Plaza, or perhaps it should be said that Fuxing International Plaza and Fuxing Plaza are connected.

"What are we supposed to do?" Lin Jiade asked.

"wait."

As she spoke, Kapok turned around and tossed a package to Lin Jiade, who caught it and discovered it was a single-ear headset with a small cylinder hanging from the bottom of the earpiece.

"This is a communicator and tactical identification device. Turn on your phone and connect to the Wi-Fi signal I sent you."

Lin Jiade did as instructed. After connecting to the new Wi-Fi, his phone popped up a series of permission confirmations. After he clicked on them, his phone screen suddenly went black.

Five seconds later, the phone lit up again, the new app finished downloading and opened automatically, and the maps of the two squares filled the entire screen, refreshing every ten seconds.

The small plus sign at the bottom of the map zooms in when pressed briefly, and displays map function descriptions when pressed long.

There, Lin Jiade determined that the green dots on the map represented civilians, the red dots represented targets for arrest that night, the blue dots represented police officers, the gray dots represented magic researchers, and the black dots represented alien races that were cooperating with him.

Mumian clutched her sword, Hehuan held the Bagua compass, and Lin Jiade touched the magic potion in his pocket, praying that no battle would occur tonight.

Jasmine dropped her disguise, placing her thick tail to the other side, which elicited a regretful expression from Lin Jiade—

He really wanted to touch Jasmine's beautiful silver tail, which had a surface with patterns resembling Damascus steel.

No one spoke in the car, and no one gave them any instructions over the earpiece. After an hour of waiting, Lin Jiade couldn't help but ask, "Can I ask you a question?"

Hehuan turned to look at him: "What?"

"Please don't laugh at me if I say something wrong. If I know the Wi-Fi password, I can download the corresponding app, open the tactical map to see the real-time situation, so if criminals crack the Wi-Fi and connect..."

“If that’s the case, the cybersecurity experts at the police station will get a very good bonus this month,” Hehuan said.

Five minutes later, Lin Jiade saw on the refreshed map that the police and magic researchers from another school had entered the building. The arrest process was going exceptionally smoothly, with the number of people arrested quickly rising from 0 to 23, and then decreasing from 23 to 22.

"Attention! Someone is fleeing in your direction!" The commander's voice finally came through the channel. "He possesses Rank 3B magic. Be extremely careful when intercepting him!"

The fish that had slipped through the net on the map turned dark red and headed straight towards Lin Jiade and the others. In response, Mu Mian turned the steering wheel, aligning the car with the direction from which the fish had attacked, and slammed on the gas pedal.

Lin Jiade almost hit the rear window. At that moment, Jasmine reached out, and countless square pieces of paper peeled off her body and stuck to the car, turning into a crimson barrier that covered the car.

After accelerating for seven seconds, the car collided head-on with the alien race. A teeth-grinding sound rang out, and the orange barrier rippled but did not shatter.

Kapok drove her car and rammed the alien creature, sending it flying. Just as the creature landed, the car drove over and ran it over again.

Just as Lin Jiade thought that thing was dead, he saw a dark figure swaying and standing up in his rearview mirror. But then, more police cars pulled up, and a hail of bullets rained down the moment the car doors opened.

Kapok made the car slow down gradually until it reached zero. The man in the tight-fitting suit opened the car door, drew his long sword, and the outline of a rotating magazine was visible on the handguard.

Despite enduring a hail of bullets, the alien race had not lost its ability to move. It lunged towards Lin Jiade and his group, its path leading directly towards the Kapok tree.

Kapok began by shifting her feet, pulling the trigger, and wielding her longsword. The bullet's energy flowed into the blade, then transformed into a silver line appearing between the bodysuit-clad monster and the alien race. The alien race's tall body stopped moving and fell straight forward.

Hehuan smiled and said to Lin Jiade, "The spell that Mumian just cast will not leave any physical damage to the target, but will attack the mind. That alien looks dead, but he was just unconscious."

Kapok sheathed her sword, turned around and said, "Unnecessary explanation."

Hehuan continued, "However, its Class 3B magic refers to its defensive power. It was able to break through the police team that was specifically handling this matter and another group of magic researchers. After being bathed in bullets, it forced Mumian to draw her sword."

"Are there many criminals at this level?" Lin Jiade asked.

"It's rare, but it's become quite common lately. On the evening of September 9th, a criminal duo wielding top-tier magic appeared, and they haven't been caught yet."

Lin Jiade recalled the night 12 days ago when he was attacked by criminals in an alley. Du Juan told him not to worry about it. Unfortunately, the criminal duo has still not been caught.

The thought sent a phantom pain through his stomach, and the fear of being stabbed made his hands and feet go cold. Just then, a claw covered the back of his hand; the claw's skin was hard, yet it felt warm.

He looked at Jasmine, who remained silent, her expression one of pity and empathy. What had she guessed? What had she gone through to so quickly understand his fear?

Lin Jiade's vanity wouldn't allow him to show any more weakness in front of the girl he cared about, so he took a deep breath, patted his cheeks, and forced himself to focus on the present moment.

“That alien had other escape routes, but he kept heading towards us, making it seem like he wasn’t running away, but rather that he was meeting us… Why?” he asked.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out too,” Hehuan said. “The target has been captured, it’s our turn to get to work, junior.”

Despite Hehuan's words, once back at the police station, Lin Jiade was basically the only one doing the work.

All the captured suspects were sent to an interrogation room isolated by one-way glass. Lin Jiade, who had applied a magic potion beforehand, activated a detection spell and independently completed the identification, dividing the 22 captured people into "ordinary people", "suspected magic researchers" and "alien race".

His independent results will be compared with those of two police experts, primarily to test the performance of his detection spells.
