A Certain Magical Hogwarts
Chapter 7: Choosing a Wand
Chapter 7: Choosing a Wand
Hagrid's pink umbrella is quite peculiar.
William had seen him use this umbrella to perform magic more than once.
But Hagrid said his wand was broken and refused to acknowledge the umbrella's peculiarity.
William was curious, but he didn't pay much attention. He was still a novice and didn't fully grasp how extraordinary the power to restore a broken wand to its original state truly was!
"Alright, our little wizard is getting impatient too." Ollivander turned his gaze back to William.
As he spoke, he pulled a measuring tape with silver markings from his pocket.
"Mr. Stark, which arm do you use to wield your wand?"
"Right hand."
"Okay, raise your arm, good."
Ollivander began taking William's measurements, starting from his shoulder to his fingertips, then from his wrist to his elbow, from his shoulder to the floor, from his knee to his armpit, and finally his head circumference.
William wanted to ask, "Since it's the wands that choose the wizard, and each wand's size is already pre-made, unlike wizard robes which are custom-made to fit the wizard's measurements... what's the point of measuring them now?"
However, he didn't ask aloud; being so blunt... would easily get him beaten up.
As Ollivander measured, he rambled on, "Every Ollivander wand contains super-powerful magical substances, and that is its essence, Mr. Stark."
I usually use unicorn hair, phoenix tail feathers, and dragon nerves.
Every Ollivander wand is unique, because no two unicorns, dragons, or phoenixes are exactly alike.
Of course, if you used a wand that should belong to another wizard, you would never achieve such a good effect.
The measuring tape started operating automatically, and Ollivander moved between the shelves, constantly directing Cedric to select some long boxes and move them down.
Cedric, as an apprentice, was, in a sense, a laborer.
However, Cedric showed no impatience whatsoever; it was clear that he enjoyed the job.
"All done," Ollivander said, as the measuring tape slid to the ground and rolled into a ball.
"Well then, Mr. Stark, try this one, made of hawthorn wood and unicorn hair, ten inches long, with decent elasticity."
Cedric, as an apprentice, pulled out a worn notebook. He didn't open it, but instead recited it fluently from memory:
Page 95, line 6.
As Grigorovich once said, "The hawthorn wand is a wand full of contradictions, just like the tree itself that embodies this contradictory nature; its leaves and flowers can have healing effects, while the scent of its branches can be deadly..."
Ollivander nodded and began the live demonstration:
Although I disagreed with most of Grigorovich's opinions, we resonated deeply with the complex and fascinating nature of the hawthorn wand.
They only accept owners who are best suited to them.
"Cedric, remember this, based on my experience, this wand will be especially favored by wizards who are going through a period of confusion."
With that, Ollivander snatched the wand from William's hand.
"It's obvious it's not right for you, child." Ollivander shook his head.
"Try this." He pulled out another wand with black patterns.
"Made of applewood and clam shell nerve, nine and a quarter inches long, very soft."
Cedric quickly said, "Page 1926, line 94."
Applewood represents longevity, and when combined with clam shell...
"That's right! A genius combination." Ollivander rubbed his hands together excitedly.
"Eastern wizards use this combination, and my ancestors also made a similar wand for Nicolas Flamel."
The results seem quite good, although most people attribute it to time magic or the Philosopher's Stone—come on, try it, child!
The moment William touched the wand, he felt his magic power uncontrollably pouring outwards.
Ollivander immediately snatched the wand, but it was too late; the door was blown apart.
"Oh, sorry," William said.
"This is none of your business, child. The door will be restored soon, but this wand doesn't seem to suit you either."
Ollivander became increasingly excited; he hadn't seen such a discerning customer in a long time.
"We'll find it, the perfect one, won't we?"
William tried one wand after another, piling them high and high on the bench.
But Ollivander kept making Cedric pull wands from the shelf, and he was trembling and in a state of agitation.
"A picky customer can't find the perfect match? No problem, let me think. We're sure to find the most ideal, perfect, and suitable one for you here—let me think—oh, I've got it! How could we not have it?"
Ollivander roared, startling Hagrid so much that he nearly snapped his little pink umbrella in half.
Ollivander jumped and danced around like a madman.
"An extraordinary combination: cherry wood, phoenix feather, twelve and three-quarters inches. Excellent, very sturdy."
He walked to the shop window himself and carefully picked up the wand that lay quietly on the faded purple cushion inside, which had been sitting in the dusty shop.
William took the wand and felt a sudden heat at his fingertips.
He raised his wand high above his head, then swung it down with a whoosh, cutting through the dusty air. A red light appeared, and the wand tip sparkled like fireworks, casting dancing spots of light onto the walls.
Mr. Ollivander exclaimed, "Oh, wonderful! Oh, really, wonderful!"
Cedric put the wand back into its box and wrapped it in brown paper, while Ollivander stared at William with his pale, colorless eyes.
"This wand was the last one made by my grandfather, Gabbard Ottawi Ollivander, who was also the greatest wandmaker in the last two hundred years."
The material is rare cherry wood, which has become the most beloved material at Mahottokuro Magic Academy since the grandfather started this combination.
I thought this wand would be displayed in a shop window forever, but I never expected…”
Hagrid clapped and said, "This wand was already in the window when I came to buy it as a child."
William: "..."
Ollivander's words sounded impressive, but William wondered to himself—was this old man really not responding to the Ministry of Magic's "supply-side structural reform" and trying to reduce inventory?
He didn't dare say it aloud, but instead asked in confusion, "Mahottokuro?"
"Oh, that's the only known magic school in Asia, although I don't think that's quite accurate."
As Ollivander spoke, he gathered up the destroyed gate, giving Cedric a knowing look.
Cedric nodded almost imperceptibly, then pulled out a gift box from somewhere.
He remained humble, but transformed into a salesman.
"Buying the wand isn't the end of the story. It's a very precious item that needs regular maintenance."
But don't worry! Our Ollivanders Wands store is offering a special summer skincare package:
For just three Galleons, you can receive a five-Gallon maintenance kit to keep your wand in top condition forever.
If you pay five Galleons, in addition to maintaining the equipment, you will also receive a two-year warranty card.
During the warranty period, unless the wand breaks, Ollivander Wand Shop will repair it for you free of charge.
Of course, in addition to that, we also have a family package that covers all the wands in your family, but that's more expensive..."
William felt as if he were seeing the barber shop salesman again.
Before he could say anything, Hagrid stood up from his chair, shouting excitedly, "Come on, give me one!"
William: "..."
