Chapter 97 A Very Harmonious Town

Saul leaned closer. "Ada, is there anything going on in your town?"

"...You'll find out later." Ada didn't explain, and continued on his way with his head down.

Seeing that the other party was unwilling to elaborate, Thor had no choice but to obediently follow along.

As he approached, he saw two gates opened in the town's wall facing the main road.

A large gate, secured with heavy wooden stakes, was half a meter higher than the surrounding wall.

It's a small door, a little over two meters high, and very narrow.

The sky was growing increasingly dusky, the town's main gate was tightly shut, but the side gate was open.

There was a soldier in cloth armor by the small gate, leaning against the wall, yawning listlessly, holding a wooden spear with an iron tip.

Thor looked around but didn't see a second person dressed as a soldier.

"Ada, is there really that little guard in your town? I remember it's right next to the border, isn't it? Is it safe?"

Ada lowered his voice and replied, "Our duchy has been at war with the duchy of Knas to the north for the past few years. One of the town's wizards and most of the guards have been transferred to defend the area."

"Huh?" Thor looked flustered. "Who's in charge of safety in town then?"

Thor's voice seemed a bit loud, causing the squinting soldier to look up at him.

Ada quickly pulled Thor aside and smiled at the soldier.

The soldier ignored them and did not collect the entrance tax that Saul had imagined, letting them walk into the town.

After entering the town and walking quite a distance, Ada finally pulled Thor to stop on a deserted street.

He frowned at Thor, "There are wizards in town. You'd better watch your words in the future and not attract their attention."

"I'm sorry," Saul apologized honestly. "I've suffered a lot out there, and all I want is to find a stable place to settle down. I'm afraid that after all this hardship, I'll find that this place can't be my home either."

Saul hung his head, looking dejected.

When Ada saw Thor like this, she couldn't utter a word of her accusations.

He wiped his sweat-dampened short hair and said helplessly, "If there's anything, just ask me when we get back. Don't gossip or ask around on the street."

"Okay, okay," Sol agreed in succession.

But Saul had already decided to go out and inquire about the news first thing tomorrow morning.

After all, rumors and gossip from the masses are a very important source of intelligence.

However, in order not to affect the honest and kind-hearted Ada, he would try his best to find some suitable people to secretly inquire.

For the rest of the journey, Thor behaved very well.

Ada would occasionally glance back at Thor, and seeing that he was behaving himself and not running around asking questions, she was quite satisfied.

Although it was getting dark, there were still quite a few people on the streets of the town.

The wealthy families had already started lighting their lamps, while the poorer families quickened their pace, hoping to finish their work before dark.

After a long and tiring day, adults begin to prepare for sleep after dark.

The children, meanwhile, were outside trying to delay their return home.

Ada remained silent the whole way, only nodding when people greeted him, unlike the person outside town who would take the initiative to call out to a fellow villager he hadn't seen in years.

It wasn't until they turned into a small alley that Ada's tense shoulders slowly relaxed.

The alleyway is very winding.

Compared to the main roads of the town outside, this road was full of potholes and very difficult to walk on. Perhaps it had just rained, because some low-lying areas were flooded, and you had to step on stones to avoid getting your cloth shoes wet.

Thor followed Ada's example and stepped onto the stones. However, he landed a little too heavily, and the stones were uneven, splashing water that almost splashed a passerby.

After the passerby moved aside, he first scolded, "Be careful!" but then smiled when he saw Ada in front of Thor.

"Hey, Ada's back?"

"Aunt Jenny," Ada said with a kind smile.

Aunt Jenny, carrying a basket, reached into it and took out a string of bright red chili peppers.

"These are freshly dried. Take them home and eat them with steamed buns." Ignoring Ada's refusal, she stuffed the chili peppers into the wooden basket Ada was carrying. "They're not too spicy, so Penny can eat them too. She should get used to them."

Aunt Jenny laughed heartily.

Ada was honest and couldn't refuse, so he accepted it somewhat embarrassedly.

Aunt Jenny then turned her gaze to Saul, scanning him up and down with a smile. "Here to visit relatives?"

Thor grinned but didn't answer.

Ada quickly chimed in, "He's from the same hometown. He couldn't make a living outside, so he came to stay with me."

This time, Aunt Jenny's gaze was even more unrestrained.

"Just arrived in town? You look quite spirited, just a bit thin. Remember to work hard; you'll get stronger with work."

"Hey, hey," Ada echoed for Sol, quickly pulling him away.

They continued walking forward, when a burly man with a thick beard came towards them carrying a thin old man.

In the slightly chilly early spring, the burly man was dressed lightly.

His collar was open, revealing his muscular chest. A curved sword hung at his waist, which he occasionally slapped against the burly man's thigh.

"Captain Jeff!" Ada greeted him warmly this time. "You've helped bring that old madman back again."

The tall and burly Captain Jeff lifted the little old man from his hands.

Ada quickly handed the hoe and wooden basket to Saul and took them from the old man.

"That old madman went to the mayor again to tell him about his miserable past. If I hadn't pulled him away quickly, he would have gotten a beating today."

Captain Jeff's hands seemed to be getting sore, and he said while rubbing his wrists.

As if on cue, the old madman who had been taken away by Ada suddenly shouted out loud.

"Damn barbarians!"

Everyone's used to the crazy guy suddenly saying this.

Thor glanced at it, but felt that although the old madman's eyes were empty, they were not confused.

He doesn't seem like a madman, but rather like someone who has lost all hope of living.

"I've taken him back. Captain Jeff, would you like to come in for a drink of water?"

Captain Jeff waved his hand, turned and left, "No need, I have to go back to patrol."

Ada watched Captain Jeff's retreating figure with a warm smile.

At this moment, the old madman shouted again, "We can't trade with barbarians!"

The voice was mournful.

Thor noticed that Captain Jeff, who was leaving, paused, and his right hand seemed to instinctively reach for the scimitar at his waist.

But he didn't turn around or say anything; he simply kept his hand on the knife and walked away quickly.

Ada was so focused on silencing the old madman in her arms that she completely failed to notice Captain Jeff's unusual behavior.

"Never mind, Thor, put your things aside and lend a hand."

The rambunctious old madman was too much for Ada to handle, so she had to ask the "skinny" Saul for help.

Saul threw away the stick in his hand, transferred the hoe and the wooden basket to his right hand, and gently lifted the old madman up from under his left arm—just as the old madman was about to slip to the ground.

"Uh..." Ada felt the weight on her arm lighten considerably and looked at Thor in surprise. "You're pretty strong."

Suo Erhun said nonchalantly, "It's something you learn to do to make a living."

"Now I truly believe that you've come this far on your own."

Ada and Thor together helped the old madman into a small courtyard.

Ada lives in a house with a narrow courtyard.

The courtyard was surrounded by houses on all sides. Several hemp ropes ran through the houses, with underwear, outerwear, shoes, blankets, wild vegetables, and all sorts of strange things hanging on them.

Through the scattered items hanging on the rope, the two saw a man with his buttocks sticking out, peering into the wooden window of one of the houses.

Upon seeing this, Ada immediately became furious!

"Jayce! You bastard, stay away from my sister!"
