Chapter 96 Fellow Villagers Meet
Chapter 96 Fellow Villagers Meet
Nick took a letter from his inner pocket and handed it to Saul. "This is a letter from Mentor Rum to Sailtown. You need to take a detour to deliver it. The coachman knows the way."
Saul took the letter and found that it was not sealed and could be taken out and read at any time.
"Are there any taboos on this? Can I look at it?"
"Of course you can watch it. This is for ordinary people. There are at most two level one apprentices in Mofan Town, and they're both trash. If they get serious, you can't kill them with one hand."
Nick reassured Saul.
"Mofan Town is located on the border of the Principality of Kema, next to a disputed area bordering the Principality of Knas, making the situation somewhat complicated. However, they provide Tari with Mofan Fruit, a local specialty, every year, and in return, Tari provides them with some protection."
Nick gestured for Saul to open the letter and take a look.
Saul opened the letter and saw rows of elegant cursive handwriting. The image of Rum's slender, folded arms automatically came to mind.
The letter was simple: it rebuked Sailtown for the declining quantity and quality of its tributes. If this continued, the Gorsar Wizard Tower would withdraw its protection of Sailtown.
"Do you need me to collect the tribute?" Thor wondered if his 14-year-old appearance would be appropriate for the occasion.
"No need for that. Every summer, senior students in the third grade will collect them. After all, that thing still has some experimental value."
Although no one dared to eavesdrop on their conversation, Nick still moved slightly closer to Thor and lowered his voice.
"Also, you have two options for going to Mofan Town this time. One is to go directly there, give them a good scolding on behalf of Instructor Rum, and then enjoy yourself, extorting and demanding bribes."
"Or perhaps we could investigate the reasons for the decrease in their fruit production, and find out if they are now engaging in bribery and extortion."
"If you can find out the reason, you don't need to punish them. Just report it to Instructor Rum when you get back. But if they dare to disrespect you, just remember that you represent the Wizard Tower, and you'll know what to do."
Nick handed the mission over to Thor and left with the group.
Saul and the coachman were left behind, and they continued along the original route.
Mofan Town was not far from where they parted ways. Thor only traveled for one day and arrived at the eastern outskirts of the town before dark.
Nick gave Thor a task that could be completed in two ways, but also had two different rewards.
Although Thor wasn't a detective, he was eyeing the second type of mission reward item and decided to try investigating it first.
He told the coachman to wait in the suburbs while he used a magic trick to change his clothes.
Now he is dressed like a refugee in the wilderness, and his hands are no longer black, but have turned into a normal skin color.
Before Saul left, the coachman quietly handed him a small bag of coins.
The purse contained a dozen or so silver coins and a few copper coins. The coins were all intricately patterned, unlike anything produced by this environment and level of productivity, suggesting the influence of witchcraft.
Thor pocketed a few copper coins and put the rest in his pocket.
He was still unsure of the purchasing power of these coins and feared that taking too much would affect his ability to remain undercover.
After parting ways with the coachman, Saul picked up a stick by the roadside and used it to walk, feeling more like one of those vagrants.
There aren't many pedestrians outside Mofan Town.
Sol imitated the way the pedestrians on the road, changing his expression and demeanor, and slowly approached the town not far away.
From the outside, Mofan Town looks quite large.
A wall was built around the town, which looked old and dilapidated after being weathered by wind and sand.
Outside the wall, there are also several rows of old houses, and you can tell from the outside that the owners are not living well.
There is also a small patch of farmland outside the town that is being cultivated.
As Saul passed by the farmland, he saw a dark-skinned young man turning the soil with a hoe.
When the other man reached the end of a row, he straightened up, wiped the sweat from his brow with his sleeve, and met the gaze of Saul, who was observing him.
When Thor saw the other person's face, he thought he might still be a teenager.
Thor turned away indifferently, leaning on his cane, preparing to leave.
"Sol?"
But then he heard an uncertain shout from behind.
Thor stopped and turned back in confusion.
How could anyone call him by name?
When Thor turned around, he saw the young man rushing towards him with a hoe in hand, his face full of excitement.
"Thor, it really is you! When I rushed out of the village and didn't see you, I thought you had died at the hands of the barbarians."
"Who are you?" Thor looked confused, but in his heart he thought that he must have met someone who knew the original owner of this body.
"It's me, Ada! Haha, you've changed a lot, haven't you? You haven't changed much, still look like a skinny monkey. But how did you get out of the village? I really thought you were dead, and I cried for a long time, hahaha." The young man called Ada patted Thor's shoulder without any hesitation.
He looked at Thor, who still seemed confused, and his smile faded slightly.
「你不记得我了?我原来就住在你家隔壁。当年你也十岁了,还说要等我妹妹长大娶她,后来我把你胖揍一顿……你忘了吗?」
"I...I really don't remember," Thor said through gritted teeth.
That's the original owner's business; it has nothing to do with him.
In situations like this, Thor could simply ignore him and leave. But then Thor thought of the town ahead, and his tone became eager with a hint of inquiry.
"Ada, do you live in Mofan Town?"
Noticing Saul's gaze, Adal hesitated for a moment before admitting, "Yes, my sister and I live in town now. But we rent a small courtyard, and life is pretty tough."
Thor beamed, "Great, Ada! I was just looking for a place to stay in Mossport Town. But I've been wandering around for a long time and don't have much money. Can I stay at your place for a few days? I promise I'll move out as soon as I find work."
An abrupt and straightforward request is what makes honest people hardest to refuse.
"Well, we don't have much room to live in our house." Ada's grip on the hoe tightened, almost drilling a hole in the ground with it.
Thor took a deep breath, reached out and touched his flat stomach, and said pitifully, "I can sleep on the ground. I haven't eaten for days. I heard that Mofan Town is a good place, so I traveled for several days to get here. If I can't find a place to stay in the town, I'm afraid I'll die in the wilderness."
Thor tilted his head back, his eyebrows and mouth twitching together.
"Please, Ada, please, since we're from the same village."
Ada looked at Thor, who was covered in dust, with a gaunt face and pale, purplish lips. Her eyes were complicated, and it was unclear what she was thinking.
"Okay, but I can only provide you with a place to stay. As for food, all you'll get is steamed buns. You must go to town and find work as soon as possible."
"Okay, sure!" Thor readily agreed, a smile spreading across his face.
Ada glanced at the fields, then looked at the setting sun in the distance.
"Alright, let's call it a day." Ada walked to the edge of the field, picked up the wooden basket he had hidden under the ridge, and came back.
"Let's go. Sigh..."
Ada walked ahead, sighing.
Thor felt no unease about bullying an honest man and followed Ada toward the town, looking around curiously.
Along the way, there were other farmers like Ada. Some of them would greet Ada, while others would just glance at her indifferently and then continue working.
"Ada, your town is so nice! It's much more peaceful than where I used to live."
Ada paused, then muttered, "It's not as good as you think. Just remember not to meddle and work hard. Maybe you can build a house outside town and find a wife someday."
