Chapter 5 Getting By Deception

Chapter 5 Getting By Deception

"Next."

A voice came from the front of the group. The boy in front of Thor glared at him one last time before turning around.

Thor only glanced coldly at the other person's back, memorized his appearance, and then shifted his attention to the front.

The crowd moved forward a bit, and Thor could already see the people at the very front.

The two people were sitting at a table with some things on it, but they were too far away to see clearly.

After a while, there were only five or six people left in front of Thor, while three or four more people had lined up behind him at some point.

I guess he was just like me, a servant by origin, just there to make up the numbers.

"...This child has no talent for magic, and his mental strength is also very poor. He's lacking in both areas, so he's worthless. How was he chosen?"

At this moment, a young man in charge of the assessment suddenly shouted loudly.

Thor quickly looked over and saw a chubby boy smiling with squinted eyes, handing something to the complaining young man.

"My talent is average, please bear with me, Wizard."

This is blatant bribery!

To everyone's surprise, the young man, who was clearly just a wizarding apprentice, took the item and still sneered, "A magic crystal? Looks like that's how you've gotten your way. You really think wizards can be bossed around by money?"

The fat boy's usually effective methods failed him, and his smile froze instantly.

"That's not what I meant, sir."

He was about to argue when the young man suddenly flicked something with his thumb.

From Thor's angle, it wasn't clear, but it seemed to have hit the fat boy's face, or perhaps his mouth.

Then, Thor witnessed a scene he would never forget.

The fat boy froze instantly, then melted into a pool of liquid like a candle, in which his facial features, hands, and feet could still be vaguely seen.

The man next to the young wizard apprentice clicked his tongue.

"It's so filthy, it's disgusting. Wouldn't it be better to just throw it in as a servant?"

Thor's heart sank.

He was also a servant!

At that moment, the hardcover book, which had been quiet for several days, suddenly flew in front of Thor and unfolded again with a whoosh.

[May 25th, 314th year of the lunar calendar]

You've finally joined the ranks of apprentices.

But you've forgotten how you became a servant. Someone who failed due to a lack of magical aptitude back then, do you think they'd suddenly have wizarding potential after a few years?

How ridiculous, how ridiculous.

You're hilarious!

really!

Thor stiffly followed the group forward again, and heard a few uneasy whispers behind him.

If he takes the test like this, he probably won't pass.

By reading the contents of the hardcover book, he would likely be discovered and then die from laughing hysterically.

Thor glanced down at his left hand, which was tucked into the shadow of his sleeve.

The skeletal left hand, which could intimidate servants and even ordinary stewards, certainly couldn't intimidate wizard apprentices.

Are we going to bring out Kongsha?

Just as Saul thought of this, lines of text appeared on the hardcover book.

Because you failed the magic test and your servant identity was exposed, West Germany interrupted the test, intending to take your life.

At the crucial moment, you brought up Kongsa, and West Germany silently let you off the hook.

After completing the other two tests, you successfully became a low-level wizard apprentice, and that very night, you were fortunate enough to turn into a pile of bones.

Now your left hand doesn't look so awkward anymore.

Sol paused.

Even bringing up Kongsa won't work?

Fear crept back into Thor's heart.

How can I pass the test?

Even if Thor were to give up now, death would be all that awaits him.

He didn't need a hardcover book to remind him of this.

With each step he took forward with the group, it felt like he was approaching an abyss... he was about to fall!

"Think quickly, think quickly, there must be another way."

Saul's eyes were fixed on the table that was getting closer and closer, on which were the instruments used for testing.

He watched the testing process carefully.

Those participating in the test will be asked to take the test one by one from left to right.

The first one on the left is a black crystal ball, which is used to test magical aptitude.

Place the crystal ball between your eyebrows. The more transparent the crystal ball becomes, the higher your magical aptitude.

In the middle is a wooden doll, carved to life, depicting a little girl, but with empty, dark holes for her eyes.

The tester stares into the little girl's eyes, and the doll will start to move. The greater the movement, the better the mental aptitude.

The paintbrush dipped in paint seems to be measuring elemental affinity.

Draw a circle on a piece of white paper, and the paint will automatically change color. Then the young wizard apprentice will recite two elements, which will be written down by another man.

Saul watched nervously as the two men underwent the test—those who, like the fat boy, got by by paying money were a minority—and both of them passed.

But Saul found that both men were pale and listless after the test.

So much so that after completing the third test, they all staggered to the side, and one of them looked like he was about to faint.

Maybe……

Although he wasn't entirely sure, since he already had a new plan and the hardcover book hadn't appeared yet... Thor solidified his idea.

At this point, he no longer had the right to withdraw; he could only try to overcome this death obstacle.

There were fewer and fewer people in front of Thor.

Finally, it was his turn.

The young man, who was lounging lazily in his chair, immediately sneered when he saw Thor's face.

Does he know me?

Thor's heart skipped a beat, but a look of fear appeared on his face.

"Let's begin," the young wizard apprentice drawled, pointing to the black crystal ball on the left.

Thor obediently reached out and picked up... the paintbrush used to test elemental affinity.

Before the young wizard could speak, he gripped the paintbrush tightly in his right hand and quickly drew a trembling circle on the white paper.

The circle that was just drawn is black.

Saul picked up his pen and waited, holding his breath.

The young wizard didn't seem very happy, but he squinted and ultimately said nothing.

The black circle slowly changed, revealing several colors. The longest segment was no more than the length of a little finger and remained black.

In other places, it's truly a mix of red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple, gold, and white—all the colors come together.

"Heh." The young wizard apprentice chuckled upon seeing this. "You're quite greedy."

Saul realized he was being mocked, and simply lowered his head in feigned fear.

"Dark element, that's it... I can't find a second most common element, Nick, just write one down."

Another man, named Nick, nodded and wrote "Dark element, light element" on the paper.

The young wizard apprentice—who Thor was now certain was Sid mentioned in the hardcover book—chuckled, “Two opposing elements? You really wrote that down casually.”

Nick didn't say anything.

Sol waited until Sid finished laughing before reaching for the wooden doll that tested mental strength.

He looked down at the doll's empty eyes.

Yu Guang also kept an eye on whether the doll's movements changed.

"Help me, help me, help me..."

A series of whispers rang in Saul's ears, spoken very quickly and softly, making one unconsciously want to listen.

But the more carefully you listen, the more chaotic the sound becomes, and the content gradually changes.

"Save me, save me... Kill me... Kill me... Save me..."

Thor felt dizzy from listening.

"Okay, you can stop now."

A deep, resonant voice came from West Germany.

But Thor didn't stop; he let his mind immerse itself completely in the sound.

"That's enough, do you want to die?"

Thor was startled and abruptly raised his head. He first glanced at the wooden doll, whose hands were already raised, and then looked at Sid, who had stood up at some point with an angry expression.

Then, before he could utter another word in West Germany, his eyes rolled back and he fainted.
