Chapter 22 The Necessity of Having Special Skills

Chapter 22 The Necessity of Having Special Skills

Saul successfully landed a job in the morgue, overseeing the third stage of the process, at the cost of the maid losing her throat.

Thor also received a leather robe from Katz.

It's a bit stuffy to wear, but you don't have to be careful of splattered blood and flesh all the time, and it's easy to clean.

Katz instructed Saul to work in the morgue between 3 and 7 a.m. every day. However, nothing could be taken out of the morgue, including the corpses.

Thor no longer needs to go to the lab; he can't do anything there, nor can he learn anything there.

If he submits a lot of materials, he will receive additional rewards—Kaz believes that Thor's abilities have exceeded the reward of 3 credits, so he adds a bonus to the fixed reward to encourage Thor to work hard.

This is already a very high wage for a first-level apprentice.

Normally, a new apprentice is only considered a formal Level 1 apprentice after mastering all the basic knowledge.

Besides earning a few credits by passing the monthly tests, apprentices need to rely on doing tasks assigned by their mentors to earn more credits.

Although the Gorsa Wizard Tower is tall, the number of jobs available for apprentices inside is still limited.

Safer jobs typically pay 1-3 credits per month, while more dangerous jobs may pay 4-7 credits.

In particular, a 7-credit job means that even a senior Level 1 apprentice could die.

Without some means of self-defense, ordinary people wouldn't dare to take on this job.

Saul's job isn't without its dangers.

According to Mr. Katz, a body that was brought to Thor had already undergone two rounds of screening.

The most dangerous first round is handled by a second-level apprentice who will do his best to eliminate any danger from the corpses.

The second round was overseen by a senior first-level apprentice who had mastered the basics of wizardry and knew several level 0 spells. He was capable of protecting himself and sifting through the corpses for most of the useful materials.

Thanks to his unexpected ability to scavenge corpses, Thor got lucky and landed a third job.

The third round is less risky, but it also pays less. However, if you can maintain today's efficiency every time, it's not impossible to earn 6 credits in a month.

This illustrates the importance of having a special skill.

Kaz, the instructor, also didn't understand why Thor's dark element perception was so sensitive to the abnormalities on the dead, even though it wasn't strong, or even passable.

He could only attribute it to Thor's innate sensitivity to spirits.

They have low sensitivity to dark elements but are sensitive to spirits; in other words, they are prone to seeing ghosts.

Thor didn't understand why he could see all sorts of strange phenomena through meditation, but not understanding didn't matter; it didn't stop him from using them.

If you have time, you can talk to Keli about whether different meditation images bring different effects, and whether the meditation speed also varies.

As a newcomer, I still have to figure everything out, and the mentors and senior students who were leading the way are obviously unwilling to provide free knowledge.

With guidance from mentor Katz, Thor completed his first day's work smoothly and also familiarized himself with the general layout of the third-floor morgue.

Katz, having successfully found the third worker, was in high spirits and even gave Thor some pointers.

He discovered that Thor's spiritual talent was indeed outstanding, demonstrating both speed and accuracy in learning runes. He also showed great ease in immersing himself in meditation.

Even Thor showed a remarkable talent for language learning when he was learning Noah's language.

With this ability, you could excel in any ordinary job.

However, without magical talent, a wizard is like a weapon that cannot kill. They can only become playthings, to be used and manipulated by others.

Unless he has some extraordinary encounter or waits for an opportunity to undergo a transformation of his body.

But even the mortality rate for second-level apprentices in the body modification procedure is very high. How many chances does a first-level apprentice have of succeeding?

The hope is slim, almost nonexistent.

Katz's enthusiasm for teaching came and went quickly.

Soon after, he left Saul alone in the morgue and warned him that he must leave the second floor of the East Tower before 8 p.m. and that it was best not to linger in the East Tower at all.

Thor respectfully saw his mentor off, closed the door, and then turned and walked to the conveyor belt.

He struggled with his thoughts for a while.

Now that he's all alone here, it still takes a lot of courage to pull down the wrench to catch the corpse.

Saul's hand rested on the wrench for about a minute before he suddenly pulled it down.

The conveyor belt started spinning with a rumble, but after spinning for a long time, no new corpses appeared.

Thor found it strange and pulled again.

There was still nothing.

Just as Thor was feeling uneasy and was about to pull a third time...

A man's voice came from the exit of the black tassel.

"Stop pulling, there's none left today."

"understood."

"Watch the light in the window; if it turns white, it means there's stock."

"Uh, thank you, senior."

There was indeed a small candle lamp on the black tassel outlet, its appearance no different from the others on the surrounding wall.

But while all the other candlesticks were now emitting a bright white light, this candle was dim and weak, almost going out.

Kaz didn't tell Thor this, probably because he wasn't in charge of the specific work here, so there were some oversights in the procedures.

Having no job, Saul didn't want to stay there any longer and left in a hurry.

When he left, the burly man at the end of the corridor was still sitting there, like a dead man.

But Saul noticed that his nostrils twitched.

It is alive.

The second day as an apprentice passed by smoothly, much more comfortable than the first day.

The next day in class, Saul found Claire.

"Now I have ten magic crystals."

"Pay back the money."

Keli extended her left hand.

"Do you want one credit or ten magic crystals?"

Claire's eyes widened immediately. "You got a job?"

Thor nodded.

"I heard from my mentor yesterday that besides getting credits by passing tests, apprentices can also take on positions in the Wizard Tower and earn credits there as well." She rested her chin on her hand. "But my mentor won't let me look for a job, he just wants me to study. I don't have a single credit yet."

The reason we don't let you work is because you can pass the test smoothly without working.

Thor felt a little bitter, but he quickly suppressed these slight discomforts.

"So, do you want academic credits or magic crystals?"

"Of course, it's academic credits." Keli practically wanted to pounce on him. "Damn it, I've never even seen what academic credits look like."

Credits are not like coins in your hand, so they cannot be traded face-to-face in the classroom.

They need to go to the registration room next to the library on the ninth floor of the East Tower to transfer their credits to Ke Li's name.

They quickly turned their attention back to their studies.

In the second meditation class, Monica, the instructor, did not appear; instead, a female second-level apprentice took her place. She explained some new knowledge and then began meditating on her own from the platform.

All the apprentices who tried to approach her with their magic crystals to ask questions were glared at by her icy gaze.

So the rest of the class time became a self-study period.

Without anyone to teach them, some apprentices began to stick together for support, discussing things with each other, and the classroom gradually became noisy.

Claire remained seated next to Thor.

Thor looked at the illustrations of the strange creatures in his book, and a thought struck him—he remembered the question from yesterday.

"Claire, which picture did you use for meditation?"

"The Secret Flower on the Third Page."

"Are you now able to meditate independently, without the crystal ball?"

"Of course not. My mentor said that if you can meditate independently, your mental strength has basically reached the level of a second-level apprentice." Keli was somewhat surprised. "You can already meditate independently?"

Thor shook his head. "I can only enter a hazy, half-awake state. I can't absorb elemental particles, but I can stabilize my mental state."

"Amazing." Claire gave a thumbs up without hesitation. "If I meditate outside the crystal ball, I can only see a jumble of lines."

She leaned closer. "Which meditation image are you using? Does your meditation progress depend on the meditation image?"

"The illustration of the human-like monster walking on page seventeen."

"..." Claire looked over in confusion, then flipped through her own book, before turning back again. "Aren't our books different? Why don't I have this page?"
