Chapter 121 I Can Float Down
Chapter 121 I Can Float Down
Thor heard a series of faint, indistinct sounds, but no matter how hard he listened, he couldn't make out their meaning.
He unconsciously took another step forward, but quickly realized that it was the pollution that was tempting him.
Thor consciously looked away to lessen the effects of the pollution, but the sounds around him suddenly grew louder.
He looked up and gazed at the entire cliff face.
On those cliffs, regardless of whether there were caves or not, countless white arms stretched out.
Those arms kept extending and waving, their fingers spread wide, their shapes ferocious.
Thor frowned; he was now certain that the hands were pleading for help.
He could almost see through those hands the countless corpses buried in the mountainside, and see these once incredibly powerful wizard apprentices and wizards, who, in the face of an even more powerful and bizarre being, could only be buried in despair and helplessness.
Thor suddenly understood what a wizard's burial ground meant, and what it meant for the West to become a wizard's vacuum.
That was a cruelty that Saul could not have imagined, as described in Byron's few words.
The dead bodies that appeared on this cliff are likely only a small part of the entire Drifting Valley.
Those arms, unable to make a sound, could only desperately try to attract attention by waving them, hoping to be saved.
But Thor knew perfectly well that those arms weren't even fragments of souls. They were merely the tainted resentment of the dead, tainted by the radiation of witchcraft.
After watching for a while, Thor had a strange feeling that he wasn't standing at the bottom of the valley looking down at the towering, steep cliffs, but rather flying high in the sky, mercilessly watching the dead buried underground, unable to escape.
Thor shook his head, feeling that his mental body was somewhat unstable.
"Sol? Sol?"
Suddenly someone called his name, and Thor snapped out of his daze, realizing that everyone else was staring at him.
It was Nick who called him, "What's wrong? They're about to leave."
It seems Byron and his men have already chosen the entrance.
But Thor rubbed his throbbing head and said to the three senior students, "There's something strange about these caves on the cliff behind us."
Byron knew Thor's abilities best, so he immediately returned and began to carefully observe the mountain wall that Thor had not initially noticed.
Wright glanced at Thor, then at the tranquil mountain range, and asked with some skepticism, "Weren't the wizards' corpses supposed to be underground? How come they're on the side?"
"Shor is very good at observing spirits." Byron looked away. "I have a lot of faith in him."
Bill listened, squinted and smiled, "I'm not good at that, but if you can determine which cave is more likely to contain spirits, I'll naturally listen to you."
Byron handed the choice directly to Thor, "Thor, which cave do you think is the most obviously polluted?"
Thor wanted to say that the entire mountainside was very unusual.
However, he still observed the cave in front of him again, suppressing the restlessness of his spiritual body, and carefully looking for the differences.
Bill narrowed his eyes when he saw Thor's expression, seemingly lost in thought.
Wright clapped his hands and whispered, "Is he observing spirits? I've heard that some people with exceptionally sensitive spiritual power can directly observe remnants of souls without instruments. Could Thor do that?"
Byron remained silent, which was tantamount to acknowledging Wright's guess.
Thor scanned several nearby caves, finally settling on one.
He raised his hand and pointed to a cave about three meters above the ground, with a diameter of just over one meter.
"The pollution is worse here. The possibility of evil spirits is greater here."
Although Wright still couldn't understand anything, he still exclaimed, "Thor, the way you just looked was just like how my mentor examined a petri dish."
"Your mentor?"
"Professor Anze," Wright said with a complicated expression, as if recalling something, "I'm only good at fighting, not at doing experiments. The expression on Professor Anze's face when he looked at my lab reports... was truly terrifying."
Bill laughed and said, "If you played around with fewer women, maybe your brain would work better."
Wright rolled his eyes. "I've never played with women. I always communicate with them very seriously."
Nick was still fiddling with the sensory device, but found nothing else. He could only sigh, "If anyone ever says that a wizard with only mental talent and no magical talent is useless, I will definitely use you as an example to refute them."
Bill was the most anxious and immediately said, "Now that it's decided, what are we waiting for? Let's set off now."
Byron walked up to Saul, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "Stay close to me on the road."
The four immediately chose the cave three meters above the ground, bent down and went inside, leaving only Nick in the camp.
As Wright, who was at the back of the group, disappeared into the cave, Nick remained standing in the same spot.
His hands were clasped tightly together, and he didn't seem as calm as he appeared.
Because Bill and Wright are both Level 3 Apprentices, Nick cannot use telepathy in front of them.
"Sol..." he could only silently urge himself, "Make sure you stick close to Byron."
……
The cave Thor chose was not spacious, and moving through the mountain was still more difficult than he had imagined.
This is not a normal passageway; some parts are wide, while others are so narrow that even Thor couldn't squeeze through.
When Wright encounters such a place, he will take action.
He specializes in earth elemental magic, which allows him to move freely underground.
After extending gently along the side of the mountain for a distance, it immediately turns sharply downwards.
In some steep sections, Thor could only maintain his balance by digging his hands deep into the soil beside him.
It was pitch black beneath their feet, and they couldn't see how far the downward passage was.
Bill, who was in second place, maintained the dim light spell, but it could only illuminate an area of a few meters around him.
Even with Thor's current eyesight, he could only see a blurry, indistinct image in the distance.
After walking for about half an hour, Wright, who was at the front, suddenly stopped.
"No, there's a very deep downward tunnel ahead, almost vertical."
He threw a pebble down.
The pebbles rolled and stumbled for a long time.
"We'll probably have to fly down from here; climbing would be too much of a waste of time."
"Fly?" Bill's voice rang out. "Thor goes without saying, Byron, have you learned the Featherfall Technique?"
Byron shuddered, and his entire body suddenly withered away.
His throat split open. "I can float down."
Before Thor could figure out how Byron was going to float, he saw the shriveled, skin-like senior's mouth suddenly lengthen, his lips open and close a few times, and then he took a deep breath.
"Hiss hiss hiss..."
In just a few seconds, he swelled up.
His skin was stretched to its limit, constantly bulging and bulging, until it finally turned into a long, human-shaped balloon.
Then, he raised his two hands, which were swollen like pig's trotters, and painstakingly tied a knot in his mouth.
Even Bill and Wright, who were standing nearby, were dumbfounded by this performance.
Byron ignored the two men, struggled to move his body, and smacked his lips at Thor.
"Uh-huh."
Perhaps it was a tacit understanding, but Saul immediately grasped Byron's meaning.
"Senior...you mean I should grab your mouth and float down with you?"
"Um!"
"Pfft—" Wright was the first to break down, clutching his stomach, laughing so hard he could hardly breathe. "Byron, Byron, how come I never realized you were so funny before? If only I had your abilities…"
Wright's voice stopped abruptly, and he suddenly stroked his chin, beginning to think.
Bill immediately shoved Slytherin, "Since they have a way down, let's get going!"
Unaware, Wright was pushed down the tunnel by Bill. But judging from the sound, he didn't fall into freefall.
Bill glanced back at Byron. "If you can't handle Thor, I have a way of taking him down with me."
Byron shrugged and shook his head.
Bill smirked, didn't try to persuade him further, and jumped down.
