Chapter 120 The Mountain Full of White

Chapter 120 The Mountain Full of White

Before Thor could figure it out, Bill walked back to Byron.

For some unknown reason, Bill suddenly became interested in Byron's mission and offered to travel with him.

Saul initially suspected it might be because of himself.

But after those two exchanges, Bill never initiated another conversation with Saul.

This made his suspicions seem somewhat presumptuous.

Byron was initially hesitant about Bill's proposal.

However, considering that Chui Shou Gu had been acting strangely recently and that the surrounding area didn't seem very safe, he still agreed.

After all, three level-three apprentices acting together, as long as they don't fight amongst themselves, can basically roam freely around the outskirts of Chui Shou Valley.

"Our mission is to capture an evil spirit," Byron stated his requirements.

"You catch evil spirits, we collect corpses, perfect. We might even find some relics from the past in the caves." Bill raised an eyebrow, looking like he was about to obediently cooperate.

The addition of two Level 3 apprentices to the team is beneficial to Thor and his companions' plan to capture evil spirits.

Before leaving, Bill casually threw the four people he had just killed into a hole in the ground.

Even if the body is destroyed to cover up the crime.

The group set off to continue deeper into the Valley of Falling Hands. The Wood Spiders became even more crowded, but thankfully, there was no fat man among the group of wizard apprentices.

As they walked, they encountered more and more holes in the ground.

Some of these caves are as thin as a forearm, while others are three or four meters in diameter. Most of them are so deep that the bottom is unknown.

When driving the wood spider, be careful that the spider legs don't get stuck in the burrow.

"Many of these burrows were created by wizards for exploration. Because there was no overall plan, they dug haphazardly, and the underground is a maze that makes it easy to get lost," Byron said to Thor while carefully piloting the wooden spider.

He was also warning Bill and his companion, who were not familiar with the area, not to wander off.

After walking for an hour, Nick would occasionally turn on his sensor to check for any spirits in the vicinity.

However, perhaps because everyone was still on the outskirts of Chui Shou Valley, or because the spirits were not very active during the day, the sensor did not react.

"Is this thing of yours even useful?" Bill curled his fingers and tapped twice on the mirror of the sensor.

Just as Byron frowned, Nick suddenly exclaimed, "Signs of spirits have been detected!"

Thor leaned closer and took a look, and sure enough, he saw a blurry shadow on the mirror.

The reason we can be sure it is a spirit and not some other reflection is because the shadow is a perfectly flat human shape, without the distortions and changes that other images in the mirror have.

But this shadow was different from the one Thor had seen alone before.

The shadow he saw alone, though its features were not visible, was very close to the mirror, as if it were standing right behind Thor.

The image was a dark gray, almost black, unlike the current blurry image, which is a light gray, like a wisp of smoke that could dissipate at any moment.

Byron slowed the wooden spider down, glanced at it, and said with certainty, "That's right, it's a spirit, but it's so blurry, it must have passed by in a day or two."

Bill finally became interested. "A day or two ago? Could it have crawled out from underground?"

Wright was sitting behind the mirror and couldn't see anything, but that didn't stop him from joining in the fun. "Bill, your fingers are pretty good, want to tap them again?"

Saul was startled, fearing that Bill might mess with it again. If this kind of equipment was malfunctioned, it would need to be readjusted, which would take a lot of time.

Fortunately, Bill heard the presence of spirits and his attention was already diverted from the sensor.

Before the wooden spider had even come to a complete stop, he jumped out of the window.

"Then what are we waiting for? Let's find a hole and go down into it now."

But Byron ignored him and stopped on a relatively flat spot not far away, near the cliff.

This is their temporary base.

Thor helped Nick lift the sensor down, placed it on the ground, clapped his hands, and looked around.

There were far more caves here than near their original camp. They were like sitting on a giant cheese, with caves scattered throughout the cliff face, leading to who-knows-where.

After settling into the new camp, Byron began assigning tasks.

"I suggest that everyone split up and search for caves with signs of contamination, then come back and summarize everyone's findings, and choose the one that is most likely to be entered."

But Bill jumped out to object.

"Neither Wright nor I are good at observing spirits. If you keep searching like this, you might miss clues without even realizing it. If you ask me, we should all find a cave together and keep going down. If we go deep enough, we're sure to encounter an evil spirit."

But Byron was somewhat worried, "If we go too far in, we might encounter enemies we can't handle."

Nick and Thor are both second-level apprentices, especially Thor, who has only mastered one first-level sorcery and lacks the ability to protect himself.

"If we can't handle it, we'll just run away," Bill said nonchalantly. "Byron, you're just too conservative, that's why it took you so long to advance to level three."

Whether intentionally or unintentionally, Bill slapped Thor on the shoulder, "To be a wizard, you can't be afraid of danger."

Thor had seen Bill use his purple smoke to dissolve corpses, and now he felt a little uncomfortable being held down by him.

But the diary didn't mention anything, so it probably wasn't tampered with secretly. It's unlikely Bill would suddenly attack him in front of Byron.

After some consideration, Byron finally agreed to Bill's proposal.

"You have a point. Let's go together and head straight underground. But we still need to leave one person at the camp to monitor the sensors. Nick and Thor can take turns."

While assigning Thor a task, he pulled Thor aside and said, "The things that happened before were still a bit strange. Even if a tidal storm occurs, it rarely affects the entrance to Drifting Hand Valley. So I plan to catch the evil spirit as soon as possible, complete the mission, and leave."

Thor nodded.

"Of course, we will help you find a suitable spirit along the way, but we may not have time for you to study it slowly."

Finding a more complete spirit body for himself was just a side effect; since things weren't quite right here, Thor naturally wouldn't insist.

Besides, the credits earned from completing this mission alone are quite substantial, so Thor wasn't too greedy.

"I'll figure it out myself. Don't worry too much about my spirit."

Thor thought to himself, at worst he could ask Nick to shatter his spirit and strengthen his hands again. It would just be a little wasteful.

The tasks were reassigned, and it was already afternoon, but no one wanted to waste the day, so after a quick meal, the exploration team prepared to set off.

Nick is in charge of staying at the camp today.

Wright crossed his arms and stared at the dense array of holes in the ground before him, a conflicted expression on his pale face.

"Which entrance did we enter from?"

Bill clapped his hands. "Since we're going to go deep anyway, let's choose the closest one!"

He pointed to a hole about two meters in diameter about five meters away and said.

Byron, however, chose a cave about three meters in diameter with traces of human activity around it. "I'd rather find one that has been explored before, has a large space, and is convenient for everyone to move around together."

Saul didn't immediately join the discussion. He thought of Byron's initial suggestion of following the trail of contamination to find the spirit, and a thought struck him.

Observing pollution—isn't that exactly what he excels at?

Thor immediately closed his eyes halfway and visualized a human-monster walking.

Suddenly, the world before my eyes... remained unchanged.

Is it because there are too few spirits around Chui Shou Valley? Or has this place been cultivated by too many people? Why is it so clean all around?

It doesn't resemble a wizard's burial ground at all.

There were dozens of large holes and even more small holes in the ground in front of them, but none of them showed any unusual reaction.

Thor was somewhat disappointed. He turned around, intending to end his meditation, when he suddenly saw the cliff behind him.

He noticed strange white phantoms wriggling outside several caves on the side of the mountain behind them.

Thor couldn't help but walk over, just as he was about to take a closer look, those white phantoms suddenly stretched out one by one, turning into white hand phantoms as thin as twigs.

Those hands, long and thin like wooden poles, densely packed like wild grass, grew on the outer edge of the cliff and cave, waving and swaying incessantly.

When Thor's gaze fell upon them, the arms seemed to sense his attention and waved even more vigorously.

It was as if it were calling Thor back to the past, or pleading with Thor for help.
