Chapter 11 The White Mushrooms
Chapter 11 The White Mushrooms
Saul's first public lesson was the study of magical texts.
The instructors were not wizard tutors, nor even third-level apprentices.
He was just a second-level apprentice with no particularly distinctive appearance.
His mind was not on teaching at all; he was clearly only taking this course to earn credits.
He spoke very quickly and didn't allow anyone to ask questions.
After being ignored for the third time, Keli puffed up her cheeks in anger.
"Alright, does anyone feel dizzy, nauseous, or even want to vomit now?" The second-level apprentice in charge of the lesson finally looked up and asked everyone a question.
Seven or eight people raised their hands in the large classroom; they were all clearly newcomers.
"Heh," the apprentice in charge of the lecture sneered, "With such poor mental strength, I really don't understand how you passed the test."
He slammed the heavy books on the podium shut, straightened up, and crossed his arms.
"Noah's script is the most common and basic of all wizarding languages. If you can't even read this script for more than an hour, then I suggest you just give up on advancing to level two."
The newcomers who had raised their hands sheepishly withdrew them under the table, their faces flushed with embarrassment. Some were indignant, but dared not openly object.
The second-level apprentice bent his knuckles and tapped them against the book's cover.
"This is too basic, there's not much to explain. When you go back and study on your own, if you can read for more than half an hour without feeling dizzy, then you'll be considered qualified. Of course, the longer the better, but don't push yourself too hard. I don't want a large number of you to die out so quickly."
Why did this person suddenly become so kind and specifically remind everyone?
Saul felt that he must have another purpose.
Sure enough, the second-level apprentice's next words were, "If you are really too stupid and need to ask me questions, remember to exchange them for magic crystals or credits."
His gaze fell on Claire, who had raised her hand several times, and he raised his eyebrows.
"However, I guess you guys don't have much money right now, just a bunch of white mushrooms."
He snorted, picked up his books, and left the classroom through the front door with his chin held high.
"White mushrooms?" Claire turned to Thor, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
Thor's fragmented memories contained no knowledge of this matter.
However, a first-level apprentice in the back row, who was not a newcomer, stood up and answered Keli while tidying up the books, "White mushrooms, the weakest, the cheapest, oh, the most delicious."
Most of the people in the large classroom dispersed in a flash, leaving only the new batch of apprentices.
Yesterday, Doze, who was trying to curry favor with Cori, walked over quickly, with his friend Rocky following timidly behind him.
Doze tugged at Corrie's sleeve and said, "Corrie, why are you still with him...?"
"What do you mean?"
Having witnessed how Thor dealt with Duke yesterday, Doze was somewhat afraid to look Thor in the eye.
"There are senior students targeting him, so don't get involved."
He didn't dare mention Saul's cheating on the apprentice test to Saul's face. He only thought about telling Claire privately when he had the chance, advising him to stay away from Saul, preferably move away from next door to avoid being implicated.
"You think everyone else will treat us kindly? Ha, you white mushroom!"
Claire turned and left with her books in her arms, perfectly mimicking the expression on the face of the second-level apprentice as he departed.
Without Cleo blocking his way, Doze quickly took a few steps back, watching Thor warily.
Sol lowered his head, picked up the books and papers he had tidied up on the table, and walked straight out of the classroom, ignoring Doze.
After Thor left, Doze angrily turned back to Rocky and said, "He actually ignored me?"
Rocky frowned. "Let's stay away from him."
The second general education class was a meditation class, which was held half an hour later.
Following the instructions in the apprentice's manual, Thor took the crystal ball he had just received yesterday to another large classroom.
The classroom is fan-shaped, with higher sides and lower corners. Thick cushions cover the floor, and many people are sitting there.
Saul even spotted a few second-level apprentices among them.
He found an empty spot to sit down and even saved a seat for Keli next to him.
Just as he sat down, a new apprentice to his left quietly picked up the crystal ball in front of him and moved to another position.
"Childish." Thor rolled his eyes inwardly. He wasn't a twelve-year-old child; this level of exclusion wouldn't affect him.
Just before class started, Claire, with her braided hair, suddenly sat down to Thor's left.
Solmer silently put away the book that was pressed on the right cushion.
"I went to ask about the price," Claire told Saul, "...That's outrageous!"
"Do you have magic crystals?"
The new apprentices don't have any credits yet.
I bought it with my allowance.
Class time arrived quickly, even after it had passed, but the person in charge of the lesson still hadn't arrived.
The newcomers began to whisper among themselves, while the veteran apprentices sat quietly with their heads bowed.
Saul opened the meditation book in his hand, which had a strange and chaotic illustration every few pages.
Looking down at the pattern for a short while makes me dizzy and my eyes blurry; it's much more uncomfortable than reading the Noah's words.
Saul carefully avoided the illustrations and only read the text in the book.
However, the characters on it were obscure and difficult to understand, and there were many rare characters that he did not recognize at all.
Saul frowned, just as he had when he first saw the book yesterday.
Then footsteps sounded again. Thor looked up and saw a tall, blonde woman leading a creature that looked like a lizard or a crocodile into the room.
She walked to the very front corner of the classroom, untied the chains of the lizard or crocodile, and stood with her hands on her hips.
"Newcomers, please put your crystal balls aside and listen to me first. Those who have already studied this should meditate on their own."
One by one, the elderly people around them turned the pages of the book, picked up the crystal ball and held it in their palms, half-closing their eyes.
"Is this meditation?" he wondered to himself.
The blonde female instructor started speaking again, "I'm Monica, majoring in lightning element. If you're taking my class this afternoon, remember not to bring any metal objects with you."
Before Thor could realize what her words meant, a blue arc of electricity suddenly shot up on Monica's face.
The electric arc appeared and disappeared quickly, but left a charred mark on Monica's left cheek and neck.
Monica raised her hand and tore it off completely, revealing the bright red skin underneath.
There was no blood flowing out, but the throbbing muscles looked incredibly creepy.
Especially when this huge scar appeared on a beautiful woman's face, the stark contrast caused many newlyweds to lower their heads and dare not look.
Thor gritted his teeth and looked at Monica. He had already seen the horrific sight of Kongsa's half-head, and it was only because of this that he could still endure it.
"Crunch, crunch, crunch..."
The lizard-like, crocodile-like creature on the ground began to devour the charred skin that Monica had thrown away.
It's so crunchy!
Thor and Claire both fell silent.
These wizards are all incredibly strange. The few who seem normal are actually not quite normal on the inside either.
Thor looked down at his white fingertips that were slipping out of his sleeve.
If he becomes a wizard, will he also turn into a human like a monster?
Kongsha's face, the melting chubby boy, the disgusting and terrifying mentor Gudo, and then there's Monica, the mentor who keeps peeling off a layer of her beautiful skin...
Is becoming a monster the price one must pay to become a wizard?
