Chapter 10 The First Night as an Apprentice
Chapter 10 My First Night as an Apprentice
Saul stared at the maid in disbelief.
He's only twelve years old!
Thor pulled the heavy cart into the room and slammed the door shut in front of the maid.
The maid straightened up and pouted unhappily.
Just then, the maid who was responsible for delivering books to room 603 pushed an empty cart over.
She looked at the young maid standing empty-handed outside the door, somewhat surprised. "He didn't let you in?"
"It's alright." The maid hooked her index finger around her collar, which snapped back against her skin and trembled slightly. "He'll need it."
Thor was unaware that the person outside the door had already identified him as prey, and was happily picking up each book and flipping through it.
Each of these books is very thick.
Some describe plants, animals, and minerals in the world that possess magical powers.
Some describe the characteristics and legends of common ghosts and monsters.
Some are like foreign language textbooks, but they are as complex and difficult to understand as English-Chinese dictionaries.
There are also pictures, but the pictures are all strange and terrifying, and looking at them for a long time can make people dizzy.
After quickly flipping through each book, Saul went to examine the things covered by the black velvet cloth.
He had seen crystal balls before, but they weren't pure black; they were transparent.
There is a set of test tubes and beakers made of transparent crystal or glass, along with a small crucible.
There was also a large wooden box, divided into more than a dozen compartments, containing different items, including several sets of clothes and a first-level apprentice badge.
These things were all described in the apprentice's manual. Thor checked the manual one by one and finally recognized everything.
Thor pinned the apprentice badge to his coat, his fingers tracing the slightly rough texture on it.
Thinking about tomorrow's first general class, Thor took out a copy of "Wizard Languages: An Introduction to Noah's Language," sat back down at the long table, and began to preview the material.
Having passed the college entrance exam in his previous life, Thor is quite adept at rote memorization and the "sea of questions" approach.
The first-level apprentice's room had no windows, so they couldn't see the outside scenery. They could only tell what time it was by the blue hourglass above their heads.
Blue grains of sand fell one by one, accompanied by the sound of paper turning and pen writing, and the whole world fell silent.
He hurriedly ate the lunch and dinner that the maid brought him, and when Saul looked up to check the time again, he realized that it was already midnight.
Classes start tomorrow, so I can't stay up too late and waste my energy.
Thor stretched and yawned, his muscles groaning with soreness, but he was in good spirits and did not feel drowsy or tired.
After undergoing the apprentice's mental strength test, he found that his energy had significantly increased, as if some valve in his body had been opened.
During those days as a servant, he had to work until midnight, and if he slept until four o'clock, he would be kicked awake and then get up to work again.
I always felt like I wasn't getting enough sleep back then.
Unexpectedly, as an apprentice, I had time to sleep and didn't feel very sleepy.
"Is it just my imagination? It seems like my mental and physical abilities are much stronger than before."
Saul was also unsure of his own condition and decided to ask his mentor for advice when he met with him the next day.
He quickly wiped himself clean, then walked to the wall and dimmed the candle to its lowest setting.
Whether in a room or a hallway, the candlelight can be dimmed, but it must never be extinguished.
This is common knowledge that even servants know.
The kind that can save your life.
Lying in bed, Saul felt a surge of excitement.
This bed is about 1.5 meters wide, which is much more spacious and comfortable than the large dormitory bed he used to sleep on.
Thor stretched out his arms and legs, trying to fill the entire bed, but he was too young and thin to even lie down sideways.
After lying there sprawled out for a while, Thor couldn't fall asleep. He had no choice but to curl up into a small ball again, pulling the blanket tightly over himself, and only then did he feel a strange sense of peace.
This time, he fell asleep quickly.
At 4:15 a.m., his biological clock forced Thor to open his eyes.
He sat up and yawned; the cool air he inhaled instantly woke him up.
Bright candlelight poured down again, and Saul sat back down at the long table.
Just as he was about to turn the page, a thought suddenly struck him. He walked to the door, pushed it open a crack, and peeked out.
His room was 604, near the end of the corridor, where he could see the ramp leading up and down the stairs.
A moment later, he heard faint footsteps, and a boy appeared in the dim light, struggling to push a small cart uphill.
Is it Brown?
Thor's eyes widened, and he was somewhat eager to try, but in the end he suppressed his inner impulse.
Although his status had changed to that of an apprentice, his strength remained the same as it had been the day before.
He closed the door again and sat back down at the long table.
"I remember Brown just worked the early morning shift a couple of days ago, why is it him again today?"
"Is it because I've become an apprentice?"
Although there were some problems with the way Saul passed the apprentice test, and this was already known to many apprentices.
But the servants might not care about any of that; all they knew was that Thor had transformed from a servant into a powerful and terrifying wizard apprentice.
So Brown, who once led the bullying of Saul, will probably have to work shifts in the early hours of the morning more often from now on.
Saul wanted to ask Brown who was on his orders to kill him.
But now is not a good time. First, Thor is not capable of extracting the truth from him, and second, it would be easy to alert the enemy.
He turned his head to look at the hardcover book on his left shoulder, reaching out to touch the book that had saved his life, but his fingers passed through the air and only touched nothingness.
"Perhaps only when I become a wizard will I be qualified to understand the principles of this hardcover book."
The threat of death did not recede after he became an apprentice; on the contrary, it made the dark clouds hanging over him even heavier. Thor had no idea what kind of conspiracy he was caught in.
Thor buried himself back in the sea of knowledge. Only studying, and studying endlessly, could give him peace of mind.
Thor was awakened again by a polite knock on the door.
Keli was outside the door; her eyes were slightly dark, suggesting she was also studying late into the night.
"Class is about to start, let's share what we learned last night?" Ke Li said without any hesitation.
This may be the true meaning of "geniuses should walk alongside geniuses".
Thor looked up at the time and saw that class was about to start, even later than he had expected.
He quickly grabbed his books, paper, and pen and rushed out the door.
"That hourglass can be set with reminders; it's explained in the apprentice's manual."
Thor instinctively made an OK sign, but Claire didn't understand it.
The two walked quickly toward the East Tower, chatting as they went.
"How long did you read yesterday? I only read for two hours, and my head is already spinning and I can't concentrate. I need to close my eyes and rest for a while," Claire said softly.
Thor's heart skipped a beat, and he didn't tell the truth.
"I usually take a break after watching for about three or four hours straight."
In fact, he ate his meals while holding a book yesterday; he only got proper rest when he was lying in bed sleeping.
He only slept for four hours in total, and now he's full of energy.
Even so, Claire stared at him in disbelief for a long time.
"Your mental strength is truly terrifying. No wonder you could stare at that puppet for so long." She glanced down at the book in her hand and said with a hint of regret, "I wish I could stare at it for that long too."
As they spoke, the two arrived at the large classroom on the tenth floor.
The room was packed with people, many of whom were clearly not part of this batch of new apprentices.
Apart from the first row, there were empty seats in the corner of the last row; all other seats were full.
While Saul hesitated between keeping a low profile or making a high profile, Claire had already walked confidently toward the front row.
She noticed that Saul hadn't followed, so she turned around and gave him a nod.
"Let's go, you can't keep a low profile anymore."
