Chapter 104 Sufficient Awareness
Chapter 104 (Mountain Town Storyline) Sufficient Awareness
Sheryl recalled the barbarian priest she had met a few times before.
The other party's alternating state of madness and lucidity secretly alarmed him, the wizard apprentice.
Perhaps the priest's sanity was on the verge of collapse, which is why he tried to stabilize himself with the Grinding Fruit.
"You don't need to know that. The more you, an ordinary person, know about the wizarding world, the faster you'll die."
"Yes, yes." Although his curiosity was not satisfied, Rupert did not dare to ask any further questions.
At this moment, a soldier brought five Grinding Fruits. Sheri told him to put the Grinding Fruits on the ground and waved for the soldier to leave.
As Mayor Rupert left, he heard Shelly urging him anxiously again.
"Find a clean girl quickly and send her over before tomorrow morning!"
"Yes, yes!" Rupert bowed repeatedly and reached out to close the door.
When he turned around, he saw the soldier delivering the fruit standing stiffly at the top of the stairs, his head bowed low, staring only at his toes, not daring to look around.
The soldiers who can come here are all the mayor's confidants.
Rupert walked over and patted the soldier on the shoulder. "It's nothing. It's just a little scary here, but you'll get used to it."
The soldier forced an awkward smile onto his stiff face.
He also participated in the tower's renovation, opening up the ground floors of the first and second floors and leaving only a wooden staircase that spirals down along the tower's four walls.
The two walked down the stairs one after the other, and on the surrounding walls were painted hideous faces.
If the soldiers were bold enough to look closely, they might even be able to spot familiar features among those faces.
Although Rupert told the soldiers not to be afraid, he himself dared not look at the patterns on the wall as he went downstairs.
I always feel that if I stare at it for too long, something bad will happen.
While the first-level wizard apprentices in Mosail Town were trying to advance their ranks to escape the barbarians' plunder, the very barbarians they were guarding against welcomed an unexpected guest that night.
The group of barbarians roaming the border between the Duchy of Kema and the Duchy of Knas were fast asleep.
They were either leaning against stones or lying directly on the ground.
No one lit a campfire, and no one kept watch.
What if someone launches a night raid?
Then just get up and fight him.
In the center of this group of barbarians stood a tent that was pitched crookedly.
Around the tent, several corpses were impaled on wooden stakes and nailed to the ground.
The corpses were all brutally cleaved in public, and the same person's body would be impaled on a stake, one side facing up and the other side facing down.
This is their unique sacrificial ritual.
At that moment, a pair of feet gently landed on the ground outside the tent, and none of the savages sleeping on the ground around them noticed the movement and woke up.
The owner of those feet gradually emerged from the darkness, and frowned in disgust as he looked at the corpses around the tent.
He then walked between the two halves of the body, lifted the tent flap, and went inside.
The barbarian, who was sitting in his tent meditating about the chieftain, suddenly opened his eyes and assumed a defensive stance.
But when he saw who it was, he stopped what he was doing and sat back down.
"You've arrived earlier than the agreed time; I haven't even received the fruit yet," the barbarian priest uttered in the Common Language, his words slurred and broken.
The newcomer looked down at the barbarian priest and, instead of answering him, said curtly, "The Kira Wizard of Kema has advanced to the second rank. She is preparing to personally deal with the bandits on the Kema border, and you are also within her scope of operation."
The barbarian priest's face was painted with alternating black and red symbols, concealing his changing expressions. But the twitching muscles revealed that he was not at peace.
"Second-tier wizard...we must leave." The priest was one of the few barbarians who still retained some rationality.
"Migration requires food," the priest said, looking up at the shaman.
"You'll have to figure that out yourselves." The wizard looked disdainful and turned to leave.
After taking a couple of steps, the wizard stopped again. "Oh, right, clear out Sailtown."
The priest looked up in confusion. "You, the Wizard's Tower, don't want fruit?"
The wizard turned his head slightly to the side, his tone icy, "Just do as I say."
The barbarian priest seemed not to understand the wizard's threat, and simply stated, "Yes, Bill, sir."
"Hmph, threatening me?" Wizard Bill sneered and stepped out of the tent.
After the wizard left, the barbarian priest stood up, supporting himself with one hand.
He picked up the wooden cane leaning against the side, bit his finger, and rubbed the tip of the cane with it.
The tip of the wooden staff already had several bloodstains, each one clear and vivid.
"The Great Chief is with us."
The priest tapped the ground with his staff, and an invisible wave of energy emanated from the staff.
Outside the tent, the barbarians who were still fast asleep shook their heads and stood up.
At this moment, the barbarian priest emerged from the tent, raising his hands and holding his staff horizontally.
"Migration!"
"roar!"
"Kill!!!"
"roar!"
"Roar! Roar!"
If the first command only received a response, the second command received overwhelming support.
The barbarian priest nodded in satisfaction when he saw that all the barbarians were in high spirits and full of fighting spirit.
He looked around and spent a little time figuring out the direction.
"Ship Town, this time, kill them all!"
"roar!"
"roar!"
"Roar! Roar!"
……
Around 5 a.m.
As dawn broke, everything around was still shrouded in darkness.
Inside the room, Thor, who was meditating, suddenly sensed someone approaching and opened his eyes.
Immediately afterwards, the gate to the courtyard was pounded on relentlessly.
No matter which room someone is sleeping in, it takes a little time from waking up to getting up and going to open the door.
But the people outside weren't even willing to wait that little bit of time.
"Clang! Clang!"
With a loud crash, the courtyard gate was pushed down.
Only then did Ada rub her eyes and get out of bed.
"Who's here so early? Holy crap, the door!"
He rushed out of the hut in disbelief, only to find the group of people who had stormed into the courtyard walking straight toward his house, led by Jeff, the town's soldiers' captain.
Ada's mind was instantly filled with many scenes that he had once been terrified of. Yet, his heart was resisting these answers.
Penny is so young, she's not suitable to be the foster mother of the Sound-Grinding Fruit at all, and she's also blind, so she can't be considered a pure and beautiful girl.
"Maybe it's for some other reason, maybe they've come to find me," Ada prayed silently.
However, things always tend to turn out the worst.
Captain Jeff led his men up to Ada. Looking at the slightly confused and fearful face of the boy, Jeff felt a pang of pity.
But his face remained expressionless; his mouth opened, and he coldly uttered the most ruthless words, "Ada, your sister Penny has been chosen to be the sacrifice for the Grinding Fruit. Now we've come to take her away."
Thor, still sitting at the table, frowned slightly and turned to look at the large cabinet on the wooden bed.
The door of the large cabinet was gently pushed open, revealing Penny's slightly bewildered face.
Outside, Ada still couldn't believe what she was seeing.
He walked over and grabbed Captain Jeff's arm. "Captain Jeff, didn't we just choose someone yesterday? Why did we send Penny again today?"
Ada was trying to find every reason that could make Penny lose the election.
"Penny is blind, and she's only seven years old. She's too young. Aren't there many other girls in town?"
Captain Jeff looked at Ada silently.
Could he say that this small town couldn't find a suitable young girl all of a sudden?
So, under the mayor's desperate orders, he thought of Penny, the poor girl who almost never left her hut.
Perhaps only Ada still naively thought that the blind Penny wouldn't be chosen.
Little did he know that the wizard didn't care about appearances at all when choosing people.
"Ada," Captain Jeff said in a deep voice, "you've lived in this town for four years. For these four years, the town has provided you with food and shelter, keeping you away from the suffering of homelessness and disaster. Now, it's time for you to pay the price for the town. The production of the Grinding Fruit has decreased drastically, and we must sacrifice another person. I hope you are prepared enough not to make me lay a hand on you."
I didn't expect some readers to dislike side quests so much. But this side quest is actually an extension of the main Wizarding Tower storyline. I think maybe they just don't want to see ordinary people's lives? I'll mark the chapter title as being about the Sailtown storyline. If you don't like it, you can skip it and wait a couple of days.
