Chapter 4 Dharma Seals

The spellcasting principles of Witchers are completely different.

From childhood, every Witcher must take herbal potions dozens of times. Most children die on their first try because their bodies cannot withstand the pain of the mutation. This is the most difficult part of the Trial of Herbs, and even with the assistance of a sorcerer, the success rate is only about 30%.

As these children grow, their organs will undergo extremely severe mutations under the influence of the drug, becoming more adapted to chaotic magic.

These mutated organs not only give Witchers a metabolic rate dozens of times faster than that of ordinary people, but also make their physical functions extremely powerful, with stamina, resistance, recovery, explosive power, and sign speed far exceeding those of ordinary people.

In addition, these mutated organs can convert the Witcher's physical strength and mental energy into chaotic magic, which is stored in their bodies and used to cast the Witcher's Signs.

This is why the effect of anti-magic gold on witchers is far less than that on spellcasters.

Of course, this physical mutation did not bring only benefits. The years of torment during the Grass Trial caused a certain degree of mental distortion in most of the demon hunters. The mutations in various organs also seriously affected the generation of various pheromones in their bodies, damaged certain bodily functions, and even caused many demon hunters to become facial paralysis.

Although their lifespan can be extended to hundreds of years, after becoming Witchers, their bodies become vastly different from humans. Not only can they no longer reproduce, but it is even questionable whether they are still human.

Standing in the center of the training ground, Wayne took a deep breath. As a half-elf, he had a slight advantage in agility and mental strength. Coupled with the mental enhancement from his two lifetimes, once he calmed down, he could clearly feel the flow of the chaotic magic stored within his body.

Following Vesemir's instructions, he stared at the wooden dummy in the training ground, concentrated his mind, mobilized the chaotic magic within his body, made an Igni sign gesture with his left hand, and gently pushed it towards the dummy.

In an instant, he felt the chaotic magic power within his body, under his control, merging and churning according to some kind of rule, transforming into a scorching energy that rushed upwards along his arm and directly burst out of his left palm.

In less than a few seconds, a dazzling yellow flame shot out from his palm and exploded in the air.

Although the fireball was only the size of a watermelon and flew less than half a meter, he successfully cast the Igni sign on his first attempt. This magical talent shocked Vesemir, who was watching from the side.

Seeing the witcher apprentice's face beam with joy at the successful casting of the sign, the old witcher clicked his tongue, coughed lightly, and said:

"Alright, child, don't be arrogant."

"Your talent for signs is indeed excellent, but I have seen several Witcher apprentices with your talent hundreds of years ago."

"Now, calm your mind and continue casting the other hand seals."

Upon hearing this, Wayne calmed his joyful mood. He had been in the world of Witchers for so long, and although he had gone through a painful trial, he had become a Witcher.

But so far, apart from his physical abilities becoming stronger, he has not really experienced the fantasy of swords and magic.

Now that he had personally cast the Igni sign, he truly felt the wonder of magic.

Having successfully cast the Igni sign, Wayne completed the next four signs on his first cast, which made Vesemir both excited and somewhat worried.

As the chief mentor of the Wolf School of Witchers, he naturally hoped that a powerful Witcher would emerge from the school.

But as an elder who has lived for hundreds of years and experienced countless joys and sorrows, the old Witcher knows very well that outstanding talent often does not represent success, but rather more hardships, or even a violent death.

The life of a genius is always full of twists and turns, and only a very few geniuses are able to live to the end and truly achieve great things.

Regardless of what Vesemir thought, Wayne was quite pleased after successfully casting five signs.

Besides being delighted with his own talent, he also heard the system notification after casting only five spells.

Sign proficiency +1, current progress: 1.

Sign LV1: Sign strength +5%.

He discovered that mastering the signs seemed easier than swordsmanship, and unlike swordsmanship which is affected by age and physique, the signs not only have offense and defense, control, and traps, but are also quite simple to use.

With this in mind, Wayne made a decision: he would focus his training on the signs and try to gain enough self-defense capabilities in the shortest possible time.

Anyway, the Witcher's lifespan is long enough, and as long as he can live, his swordsmanship will definitely get stronger and stronger.

However, that's something to consider later.

After successfully casting the five signs, Wayne smiled at the old witcher and said with a grin:

"Teacher, I've completed your task. Can I get a reward now?"

Seeing that smiling face, which is rare among expressionless witchers, Vesemir temporarily put aside his worries and showed an approving smile.

He pulled a sheathed, antique-looking dagger from his lower back, stroked Wayne's short, blond hair, and then handed the dagger to him, saying:

"Child, this is a very useful meteorite iron dagger, a gift from a master blacksmith. It can cut through the bodies of those tough monsters."

"I originally planned to give it to you on your birthday, but you behaved very well today, so I'll give it to you as an early reward."

Wayne accepted the reward with excitement, and at the same time, he heard the system notification that the task was completed.

Normal level, [Training task] completed.

Rewards: 3 experience points and one regular treasure chest.

Normal Treasure Chest: Can randomly yield a certain amount of gold or a random item of normal quality.

Although the rewards for a normal-level mission seem meager, with only 3 experience points awarded, Wayne doesn't mind.

Based on the fact that it only takes 100 experience points to level up to the second level, if he accepts one training mission from Vesemir every day, he can probably level up in about a month, which seems pretty good.

Thinking this, Wayne gathered his scattered thoughts, placed the meteorite dagger Vesemir had given him aside, wiped the sweat from his brow after casting five consecutive signs, and said to the old witcher:

"Teacher, let me meditate for a few minutes first, then we can continue practicing."

"I'm not afraid of hardship, so please don't hold yourself to the highest standards."

Seeing that Wayne was not proud of his talent, but instead demanded that he teach him more strictly, Vesemir nodded with satisfaction.

The smile on his face vanished in an instant, and he immediately spoke in a reprimanding voice:

"Successfully casting a sign is just the most basic of the basics for a Witcher."

"You are still far behind in terms of casting speed, casting cost, and casting timing."

"From now on, I will teach you strictly."
