Chapter 27 Fierce Battle
Chapter 27 Fierce Battle (Seeking monthly votes, favorites, and recommendations)
The battle proceeded relatively smoothly.
A honeycomb bomb and a charged Igni Flame scattered the water ghosts, not only killing five or six of them but also successfully halting their arrogant charge.
However, the more foolish a creature is, the less able it is to judge the difference in strength between the two sides.
Those water ghosts that were not affected by the explosion and flames showed no fear. They bypassed their severely injured companions and continued to surge towards him, baring their teeth and claws.
Wayne jumped off the railing and returned to the top of the stairs. Instead of immediately raising his sword to defend, he took a few steps to the exit of the stairs, formed a hand seal, and pushed downwards, setting up an Arden Magic Trap at the exit of the stairs.
The purple magical light instantly drew an ancient circular magic circle on the ground.
Wayne felt no discomfort standing on it, but if the water ghosts rushed in, they would immediately be affected by the magic circle, bound by the chaotic magic inside, which would severely slow down their movement.
Although this sign does not directly harm monsters within its range, its special effects make it ideal for defensive operations in this advantageous terrain, making it the first choice for demon hunters to deal with ghosts, spirits, and other light and fast monsters.
The only pity is that, due to material limitations, Geralt and Wayne each only had one honeycomb bomb. Otherwise, if they had buried a few along the monsters' inevitable path, they might have been able to kill most of them.
Wayne was calm and focused, waiting for the monsters to arrive, when suddenly he heard a huge explosion behind him.
He glanced at it quickly and discovered that Geralt had used a similar method, placing the honeycomb bomb among the horde of water monsters and detonating it.
However, the White Wolf's Igni sign couldn't attack such a long distance as Wayne's. He waited until the water ghosts rushed to the entrance of the stairs before detonating the bomb by lighting the fuse and throwing it.
This also resulted in him being quite close to the explosion site. The power of the honeycomb bomb directly blasted the silt at the bottom of the pond, the river water, and the flesh and blood of several unfortunate water ghosts, scattering them everywhere and soaking Geralt to the bone.
No matter how disheveled they were, when the explosion ended and the swarming water ghosts rushed up the stairs, Wayne and Geralt had no choice but to pick up their weapons and fight these monsters that reeked of corpses.
As a veteran, Geralt was already used to this kind of battle. He didn't care about the mud and blood splattered on his body. He leaped forward and approached a water ghost that rushed up, knocked away its grabbing arm with his shoulder, raised his silver sword high, and slashed it diagonally down at its head.
The silver sword in the white wolf's hand glowed faintly. It was a long and beautiful sword engraved with various mysterious inscriptions. When it slashed at the water ghost's face, it encountered almost no resistance and instantly sliced off half of its head.
After successfully taking down one of the water ghosts, Geralt didn't stop. He spun around to dodge the attack of another water ghost, and with his silver sword drawing a perfect arc, he slashed at the chest of yet another water ghost.
The sharp blade sliced open its chest cavity, creating a wound more than a meter long. The immense force caused the water ghost to howl and fall backward to the ground. Through the wound, one could even see its still-beating internal organs.
However, before this water ghost had even breathed its last, more water ghosts surged up from the stairwell.
They paid no heed to their fallen kin, and instead stretched out their claws, roaring as they surrounded Geralt.
Although Geralt's dodging skills were agile and experienced, allowing him to dodge several attacks from the water ghosts, the large number of monsters surrounding him undoubtedly reduced his space for maneuvering.
As the fight progressed, the space between the two became increasingly limited, forcing Geralt to frequently use the Quen sign to dodge attacks while trading blows to successfully eliminate the monsters surrounding him.
Fortunately, although these water ghosts are fierce, they are almost at the bottom of the monster hierarchy. Their claws may be able to tear through human flesh, but they cannot penetrate metal armor.
Against the seasoned Geralt of Rivia, all he could do was leave large and small bruises on his body in non-lethal locations.
Wayne's situation was completely different from Geralt's. When the water ghosts crowded up the stairs, they were first met with the Arden Trap, which was used to slow them down.
Wayne stood in the center of the trap, without making direct contact with the water ghosts. He was well aware of his advantage, and whenever a water ghost tried to break free of the trap's restraints and attack him...
Wayne would rely on his agility to dodge the water ghost's attacks by rolling around.
Once two or three water ghosts have gathered on the magic circle, he will extend his left hand and use a powerful, enhanced Aard sign to send the water ghosts flying towards the rock wall, causing their small bodies to slam hard against the wall.
Finally, while these water ghosts were lying on the ground, he rolled over to them and pierced their heads with his silver sword.
Of course, this roundabout way of fighting is not only time-consuming, but also consumes a lot of chaotic magic power in the body, so it is not suitable for most witchers.
However, with the Swallow Potion and the Tawny Owl Potion within him, Wayne's chaotic magic was just enough, and he could even find time to use the Axii Sign to confuse one or two water sprites, causing them to fight amongst themselves and disrupting their attack rhythm.
And so, the intense battle continued for more than twenty minutes.
Geralt, who chose close-quarters combat, was the first to end the fight. He was panting heavily as he tucked his blood- and filthy silver sword under his arm and wiped the blood off it.
Then, gritting his teeth and grinning, he walked step by step toward Wayne, who was still fighting.
As he approached Wayne's vicinity, the battle was nearing its end. One of the last three water ghosts was controlled by Wayne's Axii sign. Ignoring the danger of having its belly ripped open, it bit one of its companions hard.
However, Wayne, the master who controlled them, showed no mercy and directly used a powerful Igni sign, causing fierce flames to engulf the three water ghosts.
Driven by an instinctive fear of fire and high temperatures, the water demon, its stomach ripped open, broke free from the control of the Axii sign, its body ablaze, howling and struggling madly.
However, before it could perish in the flames engulfing its entire body, a slender silver sword, like a meteor, pierced its eye socket in an instant, turning the brain inside its skull into a mess.
Geralt stood aside observing Wayne's battle, and when he saw that although his armor was covered in dust, there were no signs of being hit by the monster, he couldn't help but click his tongue in admiration.
Wayne.
"Although your fighting style is like a donkey rolling around on the ground, it's very undignified."
"But I must commend your caution and prudence."
He rubbed his ribs, which had been repeatedly struck by the water ghost, and the pain made the white wolf grimac.
"Even an old Witcher like me would get beaten up and covered in wounds when facing so many water ghosts."
"But you emerged unscathed from such a fierce battle, which is undoubtedly a commendable achievement."
Hearing Geralt's praise, Wayne turned around and wiped the dust off his face with his clean hands.
He grinned, about to chat and joke with Geralt, when suddenly his gaze sharpened as he noticed a blurry, hazy cloud of gas appearing behind Geralt.
A hunched, ugly monster with strong limbs and sharp claws emerged from the gas.
Before the white wolf could react, the monster's claws were already raised high, and with a speed that seemed to split mountains and shatter rocks, it slashed down fiercely.
"Get out of the way, Geralt!"
Wayne instinctively shouted something, formed a hand seal with his left hand, and pushed forward sharply. The Ald sign instantly struck the monster that had suddenly appeared.
The attack happened so suddenly that, although Geralt managed to dodge at Wayne's prompting and escape the fatal neck position, he still suffered a vicious blow to his back from the claws.
"what!"
With a scream, the renowned Geralt of Rivia was violently sent flying.
