Mystery: Death Singer
Chapter 24 Strange Dreams
Edric didn't have many memories of Dunn Smith. He only knew that Dunn was a Sequence 7 "Nightmare" and that he unfortunately died in Tingen's story. Other than that, he didn't have any deep impressions.
Edric looked away, trying to act as usual, and chatted and laughed with Alvin as they headed to the next tomb.
Judging from Dunn and Kalis's behavior, it seems that he did not reveal his identity as an Extraordinary. The captain of the Night Watch squad was simply there to mourn the dead.
He wondered if the whistleblower letter had actually worked... Edric's thoughts flashed through his mind as he secretly complained about how slow these official extraordinary individuals were, making him feel very insecure.
"However, I don't necessarily have to be fixated on the official Extraordinary. Tomorrow is Sunday, so when I see Mr. Azik, I'll ask him about it and see what kind of Extraordinary he encountered that night."
"I really hope that when I meet Mr. Azik tomorrow, that guy happens to sneak up on me and cause trouble, and then Mr. Azik kicks him to death like a stray dog on the street..."
On the other side, perhaps because he had spent some time with his mother, Dunn's vague unease had dissipated considerably. He took out his pocket watch from his coat pocket, glanced at the time, and then whispered to Carlisle:
"Remember not to let any employee take leave this afternoon. I will have someone come and check on everyone and treat that old gentleman."
Kalis nodded quickly. If it weren't for the severe shortage of manpower today, he would have even wanted to leave with Dunn and return when the night watchmen came to check in the afternoon.
…………
Around noon, Edric and his two companions, who had already completed two-thirds of the work, didn't want to work under the scorching sun, so after lunch they all went into the break room to play cards, planning to dig the last grave after the sun had gone down a bit.
Just then, the sound of horses' hooves suddenly rang out at the cemetery gate. Kalis, who was sitting by the window, rose and glanced over, then gestured for Edric and Alvin to follow him, explaining as they went:
"I forgot to tell you this morning that a doctor from the cemetery will be coming today to check on our staff to prevent them from overworking or developing chronic illnesses. Everything is free, and the cemetery will pay for it."
Upon hearing "free," the hesitation on Alvin's face finally disappeared, and he even quickened his pace, as if he couldn't wait to see the doctor.
Edric, on the other hand, did his best to suppress his spirituality and try to make himself look like an ordinary person.
On the other side, the carriage belonging to Blackthorn Security Company had slowly come to a stop, and Leonard Mitchell, with his black hair, green eyes, and poetic temperament, was the first to step down from the carriage.
Behind him followed an elderly gentleman with gray hair and deep wrinkles on his face, who was clearly a senior doctor.
Seeing that he recognized the two night watchmen who alighted from the carriage, Kaliston immediately felt much more relaxed. He quickened his pace and approached the old man, lowering his voice to say:
"Old Neil, Dunn told me that there's something wrong with Alvin, so I'm leaving the rest to you guys."
Upon hearing this, Old Neil looked up at Elwin, who was curiously looking in their direction. He immediately sensed an unusual power emanating from Elwin and nodded slightly.
"Don't panic, Carliss. It's not as serious as you think. It's just a minor issue."
"Okay, let's go back to the break room. It's so hot outside, I don't want to work in this environment at all."
Upon hearing this, Kalis slapped his forehead in frustration, realizing he had done something incredibly stupid in the heat of the moment.
The group quickly returned to the lounge. Seeing Neil already open his briefcase and preparing, Leonard cleared his throat and smiled at Carlisle:
"Mr. Kalis, I suddenly have a stomachache. Could you tell me where the restroom is?"
Carlisle and Leonard worked together seamlessly, with Carlisle leading Leonard to the restroom. The rest room was now empty except for Neil, Edric, and Alvin.
Not long after Leonard and Carlisle left, a melodious and tranquil tune drifted in from outside, and a deep, soothing voice sang:
"Ah, the threat of fear, the crimson hope!"
"At least one thing is true: this life is fleeting."
"One thing is true, the rest are lies."
"After blooming once, it will pass away..."
The poem seemed to have a relaxing and calming power. Alvin, sitting in the chair, immediately drifted off to sleep, and Edric also felt a sense of peace and drowsiness wash over him, causing him to yawn involuntarily.
He suppressed his instinct to fight off sleepiness, and in order not to let the two night watchmen notice anything amiss, he instructed the three spirits still active in the Solomon Coin to be extra careful, and then leaned back in his chair and drifted off to sleep.
Seeing that Edric and Elwin had already fallen asleep, old Nielsen immediately took out the materials needed for the ritual magic from his suitcase and began to set them up with practiced ease.
During the time Leonard went out to chant poetry, Old Neil had already discerned that the power in Elwin's body originated from some kind of demonic magic, but it was just a curse with an exceptionally weak effect.
As a veteran "secret seeker" with over a decade of experience, Old Neil was absolutely confident he could break the curse.
…………
Opening his heavy eyes, though his head was still a little dizzy, Edric immediately noticed his surroundings. He straightened up abruptly and found himself in a dilapidated city that could not hide its former grandeur.
This city is different from normal ones; instead of developing upwards, it extends in concentric circles towards the end of a deep underground pit, looking like an enormous grave.
Edric did not make any rash moves. He stood still and looked down at the rows of buildings below, and found that although these buildings had various styles, they were all equally strange.
Some of them are towering, pale stone pillars, with huge single houses carved into their tops; some are long and rectangular, with doors on the roof and no windows; some are built deeper inside, but a tombstone stands at the entrance, looking extremely eerie; some are even built directly from bones, messy and bizarre.
Upon closer inspection, Edric discovered that the closer the buildings were to the ground, the better they were preserved, while the closer they were to the area directly above him, the more collapsed parts appeared.
Just as Edric was looking deeper into the darkness, trying to see what was in there, a sharp, intense pain suddenly shot through his mind. He lost consciousness before he could even let out a scream.
