Mystery: Death Singer
Chapter 23 Mysterious Sensation
Upon arriving at Raphael's Cemetery, Edric saw Supervisor Carliss rushing towards him and Alvin, looking extremely anxious.
"Praise beauties, Edric and Alvin, it's so good to see you two here at work."
He raised his right hand and pointed to a corner in the southwest of the cemetery, speaking rapidly:
"This morning, as soon as the cemetery opened, four deceased people were brought in. Only one of them had registered in advance, so we need to prepare the other three burial plots as soon as possible."
"Unfortunately, four employees took the day off on Saturday, so we're short-staffed. If you don't come either, I really don't know what to do."
Four people have taken leave? The person who approved it must be getting a good salary... Edric was speechless. The staff at Raphael Cemetery work in day and night shifts, and there are only seven people on the day shift. In other words, only the three of them are on duty today. No wonder Kalis is in such a hurry.
If he chooses to take the day off due to his injury, then Kalis and Elwin really won't be able to handle it.
Because in Ruen, every grave in the cemetery has strict standards, such as a depth of at least 1.8 to 2.2 meters underground, in order to effectively prevent plague and wild animals from digging up the graves.
In addition, there are length and width requirements for the inside of the burial pit; otherwise, if the coffin cannot be placed, all the work will be in vain.
As for Kalis and Alvin, one was the cemetery manager who had never even held a shovel before, and the other, although strong, was not in ideal physical condition.
If we were to hand over all three tombs to them, they probably wouldn't finish working on them even by tomorrow or the day after.
Carlis, who was just picking up a shovel and handing it to Edric, had also thought of this. After a moment's thought, he smiled and said:
"Edric, today's work was a bit tough, so I can grant you an extra day off and a bonus of five sulphurs."
Edric paused, surprised by the unexpected turn of events, and immediately nodded, saying, "Yes, Mr. Kalis."
Kalis nodded slightly. He still paid close attention to Edric, after all, he was one of the few capable men under him. Edric had never been lazy in his work and made him feel very at ease.
Just as the three were digging the grave with great enthusiasm, a carriage slowly stopped in front of the gate of Raphael Cemetery. A man dressed in formal attire and wearing a top hat walked out and, after greeting the guards, walked steadily into the cemetery.
Meanwhile, Edric, who had already dug about half of the first grave, raised an eyebrow. He braced himself against the edge of the grave with both hands and easily left, then awkwardly explained to Kalis:
"I suddenly have some abdominal pain, please wait a moment."
Upon hearing this, Kalis waved his hand and said, "There's nothing embarrassing about it. Everyone encounters the same problem. Go on."
Just as Edric hurriedly rushed into the washroom, Dunn, who was patrolling the cemetery, also came near Kalis and Alvin. He looked at Kalis, who was covered in sweat, with some surprise and asked curiously:
"Is the cemetery short-staffed?"
Carlis looked up at Dunn, shrugged slightly, and said with a wry smile, "Today was just an accident. There were many dead people who needed to be buried, and it just so happened that several employees were on leave."
Dunn nodded slightly after receiving the reply, but he did not leave. He simply looked silently at Alvin, who had been digging in the dirt with his head down the whole time.
Realizing something, Carlis's expression changed, and he quickly crawled out of the tomb, hiding behind Dunn and whispering:
"What did you see? Is there something wrong with Alvin?"
As the manager of the cemetery, he was well aware that these guys who frequently patrolled his territory were formidable, and he also knew something about extraordinary individuals, so he was extra cautious when dealing with such issues.
Dunn turned his gaze away from Alvin, a slight smile playing on his lips. "Don't worry, Kalis, it's just a small problem. No one will be hurt."
Kaliston breathed a sigh of relief, then suddenly realized that Dunn had just been trying to scare him. He immediately turned red in the face and growled:
"Dunner! You can't treat a friend of over ten years like this! I'm going to complain to Aunt Leah!"
"In that case, I should thank you for keeping her entertained." Dunn smiled, then left the blushing Kalis behind.
Dunn didn't leave Raphael's Cemetery immediately. Instead, he turned and came to an old grave. Gazing at the familiar face in the black-and-white photograph, his features suddenly softened.
"Mother……"
Dunn stood in front of the tombstone for a long time, long enough for Carlisle to arrive after Edric returned, and the cemetery manager's complexion had returned to normal.
As Carliss looked at the black-and-white photo on the tombstone, his eyes gradually reddened, and he punched Dunn on the shoulder in a complaining manner:
"Why did you suddenly come during the day? I didn't even have time to prepare a single flower."
Dunn and Carlisle have been friends for over twenty years. Fifteen years ago, one night, they were both caught up in an extraordinary event that led to the unfortunate death of Dunn's mother, Leah, a former Night Watcher.
This accident directly changed Dunn and Carlisle's life plans. They gave up the idea of joining politics through church channels. One of them followed his mother's will and became a night watchman, while the other took the initiative to come to Raphael's Cemetery to stay with his savior for a long time.
"I just suddenly felt like coming to check it out." Dunn turned around and gave Carlisle an apologetic smile.
As the captain of the Tingen City Night Watchers team, Dunn didn't need to personally go out to patrol the cemetery for such basic tasks. He just had a strange feeling, a sense of loss that he would miss something if he didn't come soon.
Meanwhile, Edric, who had already dug the first grave, climbed out of the grave and glanced at the location of Kalis while wiping his sweat. He didn't recognize the bald man, but he could sense a few almost imperceptible wisps of death energy emanating from him.
The death aura is not real; rather, it exists as an indescribable "feeling" in Edric's perception.
To put it more simply, the appearance of death energy is like a progress bar. As more and more death energy accumulates, the progress bar gets closer to the end. When the death energy accumulates to the limit, death will silently knock on the door.
With just a quick glance, Edric was quite certain that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the somewhat bald man would die within the next few months, much like the situation that had been unfolding for Klein…
"About the same as what Klein has accumulated?!" Edric snapped back to reality, instantly realizing that the person standing next to Kalis was none other than Dunn Smith, the captain of the Tingen Market Nightwalker Squad!
