Chapter 73 Strange Combination
"Elizabeth? How come everyone knows now that Elizabeth and Viya are on good terms?"
Vitas couldn't understand why things had turned out this way. Although he had approached Elizabeth after hearing about the relationship between Elizabeth and Viya, the current situation... he could only say that his decision to kill Elizabeth and Viya together was the right one.
"So they all knew about it, but our investigators were completely unaware of it. It seems we should hire locals for future investigations like this."
"You're only finding out about this now?"
"What are you doing here? You're not really just here to have fun, are you?"
"No, I'm here to find information about Elizabeth. Viya doesn't know many people in this city, most of whom are business partners. Elizabeth is the only one she can be considered a friend. I think we should start with Elizabeth."
"So how are you doing now?"
Vitas finally realized the most important thing.
"Wait a minute, didn't we agree that you would investigate among those at the top, and I would investigate among those at the bottom? Why are you here now?"
"Because there's no useful information among the upper class. What do you think we've been investigating all this time? We've been questioning those idiotic nobles for far too long."
"When exactly did you arrive?"
"It's quite a coincidence that it happened the day after the meteorite crater appeared outside the city."
Liena remembered that she had gone to see it when she first arrived. This scene was undoubtedly created by a wizard. If it was the result of two warriors fighting... then this world would be doomed.
"That was truly a horrific situation. Who do you think did it?"
"It must have been done by a wizard of the reading level. It is said that a meteorite fell at the time. This level of spell is not something that the junior wizards in this place can cast. I'm afraid even Viya couldn't cast it."
Vitas feigned surprise.
"Really?"
"Of course, when did you go to see the scene?"
"I went there immediately after the incident."
The two eventually returned to their original topic.
"So, what's the result on your end?"
"No, so I'm going to Elizabeth's house."
"Oh? You know where she lives?"
Vitas then realized that he had inadvertently said something he shouldn't have. He had gone to great lengths to hide his relationship with Elizabeth, and it only took him a second to think of how to make amends.
"Just received the news."
"Haha, this is still a pretty good result! Let's go. Although your status is not as noble as mine, I'm not the kind of person who particularly cares about differences in status. Let's act together."
"What a troublesome guy. Aren't you Etherra's friend? Can't you learn from Etherra's calm thinking and avoid causing trouble?"
"What, you think I'm holding you back with me helping you? It's lucky we're in this small place. If I were leading the class, I would have dragged you out and whipped you."
"Have you ever actually whipped someone?"
"certainly!"
Seeing her so proud, Vitas figured she probably hadn't smoked at all.
The two left the tavern as they talked, attracting curious glances from some onlookers.
Damn, I hope this doesn't get too widely known.
The two arrived at Elizabeth's residence.
Vitas felt a sense of familiarity. In the past, when he came here, he would make some adjustments to his appearance to try to make himself less conspicuous.
Now, perhaps we should make the same preparations.
Vitas looked around. There weren't many people in the alley, except for Liena, who stood out as she looked around.
"Alright, stop making a fool of yourself here. If you act normal, you'll be less likely to be noticed."
Liena was scolded, and then turned her head away, quite indignant.
"Let's go."
"Is it really okay to just let it go like this?"
"What?"
"It's strange, isn't it? Logically, after Elizabeth and Via were found dead together, the local lord should have already investigated this place. Do we really think we'll find anything useful here?"
"You may not know this, but the monster was discovered in the hidden basement of Viya's lab. I suspect that Elizabeth, who is close to Viya, also has something like that in her home."
"But if those who came to investigate couldn't find it, how could we possibly find it? How was that so-called Viya monster discovered last time?"
No one knows for sure, but based on Vitas's own deductions, he suspects that Alistair released it.
"I don't know, it's possible that a wizard was involved."
"That's more like it. Viya and Elizabeth are good friends. If such a thing really existed, it would have to be a magical creation. Do you understand magic?"
Vitas shook his head.
"What should we do then?"
Should I seek the help of a wizard? The only wizard I know right now is Declan.
Vitas wasn't particularly keen on seeking his help.
Wizards aren't exactly benevolent. If you ask Declan for help, he'll definitely be eyeing Via's inheritance too.
Vitas certainly wanted to get his hands on it. Since the wizards valued it so much, he might be able to use it to get closer to Drakla.
As Liena just said, Dedrac doesn't value his students that much at all. Maybe you can use Viya's inheritance to get closer to him.
As long as you follow the goals of this kind of person, there won't be any problems.
"I say, is it really necessary for mages like Nexus and Draco to fight to the death?"
Liena replied.
"Of course, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. My father once organized an academic conference to try to mediate their conflict. But that time... well, it was terrifying."
In that case, perhaps seeking Draco's help for revenge might actually work.
It just depends on how strong Draco's hatred for Nexus really is.
Vitas had nothing that could rival what this powerful wizard possessed.
Driven solely by hatred, by hatred for Nexus, Vitas was confident that he was absolutely no less than the archmage, and perhaps even far surpassed him.
Elizabeth's door was not difficult to open, and for Vitas, it was merely a pastime.
The two walked in cautiously, Vitas being especially wary of their surroundings, and only carefully closed the door after confirming that no one had noticed them.
Just like what Viya said, Elizabeth's room had been almost completely investigated. Looking at the place where he had spent so much time, Vitas couldn't help but feel a little emotional.
"It smells really nice."
"This is the rose essential oil she used to like."
"It seems you still miss it quite a bit."
Vitas ignored her and instead began searching for clues on his own.
Suddenly, he noticed something strange about Elizabeth's bed, which was now just an empty frame.
"Wait a mininute."
He smelled a strong odor, unlike the smell emanating from an uninhabited place.
"Did you find anything?"
"Hmm, please check this bed."
A strange conjecture arose in Vitas's mind.
