Chapter 71 The Adventurous Young Lady
Vitas gave Liena a general account of what had happened in the past few days, except for omitting his own parts and some details, he told the Duke's beloved daughter almost everything else.
Liena was thrilled when she heard that.
Undead invasion, magical creations? And dangerous wizards from other places? Good heavens, if my father had known beforehand that this place would be so lively and dangerous, he definitely wouldn't have let me come here.
We certainly can't let our father know now. If he finds out, he'll definitely send someone else to take us back.
Liena would never miss such an adventure!
She was already tired of the high castle and the servants who only obeyed her father's orders. She practiced swordsmanship every day surrounded by knights, not to hide behind high walls and be a coward!
Besides, traveling around with one's own personal guard would be too conspicuous. If one wants to achieve one's goals, find Viya's legacy, and curb the arrogance of the wizards, one should work with the locals. They are more familiar with the situation here and are more... like people from a story.
Unbeknownst to her, Liena began to see Vitas more as a legendary hero from a story who had been lost to the outside world for some reason, a gaze that Aethera also shared.
In fact, the reason why Liena, the daughter of a duke, was able to become friends with Ether, the daughter of an armorer, was because they both liked to read chivalric novels, except that Liena was closer to the stories in the books.
"Mr. Vitalius! Someone like you must have your own organization, and I'd like to hire you!"
Liena became interested, but as soon as she said that, Vitas's face visibly turned extremely ugly for a moment before returning to calm.
"I used to have a group of very good friends, but they're gone now."
"It's okay, we'll find it!"
Liena completely failed to grasp the meaning behind Vitas's words, and even Etherah buried her face in her hands.
Finally, in the awkward atmosphere, Asera tugged at Liena's clothes and whispered to her.
"That one is gone."
Liena paused for a moment, then realized how rude she had just said, and quickly bowed her head to apologize: "I'm so sorry, I just said such offensive things, I really... Please punish me!"
Vitas was initially a little uncomfortable, but seeing Liena's reaction, he felt that arguing with such a fool was beneath him.
And this is also a result of my own reserving of words.
"Alright, although I don't have any regular partners right now, I do know some reliable people. However, I personally think that too many people shouldn't be involved in this kind of thing. As for Viya's academic legacy... it's better to give it to the Duke than to those two wizards."
"Yes, that's how we should do it. You're very perceptive. If I had met you sooner, maybe none of these troublesome things would have happened at all."
Vitas's tone was overly helpless.
"Yes, if we had met earlier, there wouldn't have been so much trouble."
Vitas then began making arrangements.
"Liena, you should use your status to visit all the important figures in this city and try to extract as much useful information as possible. I'll try my best to find out about Viya from the bottom up."
"No, no, I want to go on this adventure to the bottom too!"
"Damn it, you'll only make things more complicated if you get involved."
Liena was extremely disappointed. She had thought she would be able to adventure with Vitas in places she had never seen before, but now she had to go back to her old self and do that damned investigation.
This is not what she wanted to do this time.
However, even though Liena's protest carried the weight of her noble status, Vitas ignored it, stood up and said, "Well then, it's a pleasure to cooperate. I will keep you informed when I receive new information."
He then bid farewell very politely, and Ether also bowed hurriedly before following Vitas out the door.
Liena felt something was off; for some reason, she always felt that Ether and Vitas had a very close relationship.
Then, as Vitas closed the door, Liena saw that Aethera's hand was already holding Vitas's fingers, and only then did she understand the relationship between the two.
"Aisera hasn't changed her surname yet, which means they're lovers? Hmm, really, should I tease Aisera a bit?"
Liena shook her head. Putting those things aside for now, she finally had some clues.
The reason of seeking out magical miracles created by an exiled genius wizard sounds much more plausible.
Liena had also gathered some information about Viya beforehand, knowing that Viya had some dealings in the city's black market.
It's pointless to ask those big shots; you should ask those guys.
Liena made a decision in her heart, and then put on light armor under the lining, looking exactly like a mercenary from a good background.
Liena's first stop was an underground healer, which she learned from a witch doctor. The witch doctor said that the underground healer often conducted experiments on human body suturing, and therefore had some business dealings with Viya.
Liena rushed to the alley the witch doctor had mentioned, where several young men with unfriendly faces were squatting scattered about.
As Liena walked into the alley, several young people stood up.
"Who are you? Strangers aren't welcome here."
"I just want to speak with your leader about some important recent events."
"This is important. Everyone who comes here with this excuse is basically wasting our boss's time. You seem to be new here and probably don't know the rules. Remember that..."
Before she could finish speaking, Liena had already kicked him, sending him flying several meters.
Then, the young people around her stood up, each holding various kinds of weapons. Liena had just thought this guy was too noisy and had no intention of fighting so many people at the same time.
Uh, are there too many people in this alley?
Liena licked her lips, realizing she'd probably messed up again, but... wasn't this exactly what she wanted to achieve?
More people came from the outskirts of the alley, and Liena's newly ignited enthusiasm was extinguished.
"Grab her!"
"Damn it, she kicked my brother."
"Take her clothes off, they're valuable!"
Liena could only grip her sword tightly and stare intently at the people around her.
