Farming Life Starting in Africa
Chapter 91 Ordinary Citizens
"Ready—" He took a deep breath, crouched down, and threw the grenade forcefully towards the rooftop opposite, simultaneously lunging forward and shouting, "Go! Go! Go!"
At the same time, the spot where he was crouching was also hit by bullets from the other side.
Three seconds later, "Boom!"
The grenade exploded on the roof of the building opposite, sending flames soaring into the sky.
At the very moment of the explosion, the second group of armed police rushed out of the room, raised their guns, and opened fire on the opposite rooftop. The remaining rebels were thrown about by the blast and felled by bullets before they could even react.
"The rooftop is cleared." As the team leader reported into the walkie-talkie, he subconsciously glanced downstairs.
He was stunned.
Not far away, two vehicles were driving towards this street. The first vehicle was an enlarged and taller jeep, its body looking very sturdy, like a mobile fortress. The second vehicle was a huge pickup truck, with a twin-mounted anti-aircraft gun mounted in the bed, its two long and thick barrels gleaming coldly in the setting sun.
The gunner was wearing a strange helmet, and he was looking in their direction with a telescope, seemingly having spotted the situation on the roof.
Immediately afterwards, the muzzle was slowly adjusting its direction.
"Run!!!" The second group leader grabbed his comrade and rushed toward the door. The others followed without hesitation, scrambling and crawling downstairs.
Sure enough, a few seconds later, "Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!"
The rhythmic bursts of fire from the anti-aircraft guns began.
The second group, who had just returned to the third floor, did not feel the sound and vibration of the concrete collapsing when the roof was shot at. Instead, they heard a series of ear-piercing tearing and muffled cracking sounds coming from the street below, interspersed with the sound of water bags being blown up.
Half a minute later, the shooting stopped.
Silly Cow and the other team members looked at their group leader with curiosity, their eyes full of question marks: "What did you just see? What kind of gun was that? Why haven't we heard that sound before?"
The second group leader swallowed hard, his expression a complex mix of fear and dread, as if recalling a nightmare: "It's an anti-aircraft gun. Damn it, which lunatic brought this thing here?"
He mustered his courage and peered out of the third-floor window.
Downstairs, all the rebel vehicles were smashed to pieces; not a single one was intact. Several were already ablaze, the flames particularly glaring in the setting sun. Scattered on the road were fragments of limbs and internal organs, the pieces rapidly changing color from the heat of the high-explosive incendiary bombs, and an indescribable odor filled the air.
"This is... friendly forces?" A bizarre thought popped into the mind of the second group leader.
He pressed the walkie-talkie on the front left side of his tactical vest. "Captain, the rebels on the street... have been routed."
Li Wei's surprised voice rang out: "The navy is here? So fast?"
"I don't know..." The second team leader glanced again at the pickup truck loaded with an anti-aircraft gun downstairs, his lips twitching. "I just saw two vehicles drive by, one of them with an anti-aircraft gun, and they wiped out the rebels downstairs. What do we do?"
"Stay put, I'll go take a look."
Li Wei crouched down and walked along the wall to the window facing the street, cautiously leaning out to look down.
Sure enough, there were two large trucks parked downstairs. The gunner wearing a helmet in the truck bed was also looking at the factory building.
The rebel vehicles downstairs were all gone. Everywhere were charred wreckage and smoking debris. The horrific scene on the street was enough to make one's stomach churn.
Just then, the gunner seemed to spot Li Wei, smiling and waving at him. Then he called out in fluent Mandarin, "Are there still rebels in the building? Need help?"
Li Wei froze for a moment upon hearing this. He opened his mouth and asked a question that even he found absurd: "The Navy?"
"No!" the man's voice boomed. "I'm just a Chinese citizen! I was just passing through!"
Li Wei's face immediately darkened.
Which Chinese citizen can drive around the streets in a war-torn region? And shoot someone to pieces without warning? You're telling me this is an "ordinary citizen"? Can your ordinary citizen's truck bed contain an anti-aircraft gun?
He suppressed his pent-up complaints and replied, "There should still be some on the first floor! Our people are all upstairs!"
No sooner had he finished speaking than a burst of gunfire erupted inside the building.
Bullets struck the steel plate in front of the anti-aircraft gun seat, and the doors and windows of the pickup truck, clanging and clattering like hailstones hitting a tin roof. Rosen was also hit twice in the chest, which terrified him so much that cold sweat broke out on his back.
"Damn it!" Rosen ripped off the visor on his helmet, quickly cranked the crank, turned the cannon muzzle towards the place that dared to fire at him, and slammed on the pedal, this time using the burst mode.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch—"
The anti-aircraft guns roared once more.
The intense sound of artillery fire filled the entire factory building as more than a hundred 23mm shells poured in like a torrent of steel.
"Snap! Thud! Snap! Thud!"
The bullet pierced the wall and detonated inside. Flames erupted, bricks flew, and furniture shattered. The power of the explosion was amplified infinitely in the confined space. Shrapnel bounced back and forth between the walls, tearing everything alive to pieces.
Smoke billowed up, and everything on the first floor was crushed by the fire.
In the area swept by bullets, flesh and blood flew everywhere. High-temperature flames licked at the ruins, burning everything to a charred black.
When the shelling stopped, the room was already a ruin. The walls, riddled with holes, were on the verge of collapse, the ground was charred and littered, and the acrid smell of gunpowder and blood lingered in the air, with traces of destruction everywhere.
Rosen used only high-explosive incendiary bombs, which were extremely brutal against ground units.
There wasn't a single good wall left on the first floor. Rosen tried his best to avoid the load-bearing columns when he fired, but even so, parts of the steel bars inside several of the columns were twisted and mangled. The building had definitely become a dangerous structure; it looked far too dangerous.
The anti-aircraft guns had run out of ammunition. Rosen picked up his PKM general-purpose machine gun from the side, glanced around, and saw that apart from the scattered sparks and charred debris, there was no movement on the first floor.
He jumped off the pickup truck with his gun in hand, his boots crunching on the broken glass.
Zhou Weijie and Leng Feng, fully armed, got out of the car. Leng Feng, holding a sniper rifle, warily scanned the surrounding high ground, while Zhou Weijie pointed his gun at the other side of Rosen. The group formed a small defensive circle.
Rosen looked up and shouted upstairs, "Let's clear out the remaining rebels on the first floor first, then you can come down!"
These words made Li Wei blush.
They are clearly "ordinary citizens" while the police are professional armed police officers, yet now they have had their jobs taken away from them.
