Farming Life Starting in Africa

Chapter 202 Barney's Financial Dilemma

The price left Rosen speechless; it seemed that Mia's favor could replace a driver's license.

Barney, listening nearby, frowned; it was clear they were still treating Rosen like easy prey.

Rosen didn't care, as long as he wasn't bothered and the matter was resolved quickly.

Rosen really liked Harry's parking lot, and he'd come here often in the evenings if he ever needed a car. He'd make a profit no matter how he spent the money he spent on the car he bought today.

Harry took the passport and a headshot from Rosen, walked behind the counter, and pulled out a stack of forms from the drawer to start filling them out.

Before long, Rosen received a paper temporary driver's license with his photo on it.

"With this, you can drive around here temporarily, just don't go too far. Once the official one arrives, you can drive normally."

It seems his used car shop also handles some other businesses.

The store door was pushed open, and a young white police officer in a dark blue uniform walked in. He first glanced around the store.

Seeing Harry standing behind the counter, filling out some forms, he walked over. "Harry, looks like you've closed another deal?"

Upon seeing the newcomer, Harry first gave Rosen an apologetic look before turning to the officer: "Jimmy, haha, long time no see! What have you been up to lately? It's been a while since I've seen you around."

"I was transferred to the Northern Police Department. An important figure came there, and I was assigned to patrol there."

Harry listened as if he'd heard some unexpected good news: "The Northern Police Department? Haha, they're full of rich guys there, much less of a hassle than here. The biggest problem you'll encounter on the road will probably be people walking their dogs without leashes."

"Hopefully, that important figure has run into trouble recently. My superiors just reminded me to stay away from him."

Rosen stood aside, listening to their mundane conversation, and folded the temporary driver's license and put it in his pocket.

After completing the formalities, Rosen sat in the driver's seat of the silver-gray G-Class, getting used to the interior layout of the new car.

Barney leaned against the door of the G-Wagon, glanced down at the incoming call on his phone screen, his brow twitched slightly, and then he answered it.

"Tull, I still haven't found any news about the car." Barney's hearing was probably a bit off; his phone volume was like that of an old-fashioned phone. Rosen, sitting in the car, could hear their conversation clearly.

The guy named Tull said, "Well, if we can't find it, we can't find it. I just hope those bastards will treat our car well. That Harley has been with me for three or four years. I'd be heartbroken if they took it apart and sold it for parts."

Then, Tull on the other end of the phone adopted a serious tone and said, "Okay, Barney, I'm calling you because I got a job."

Barney hesitated for a moment before saying, "Tour, I want to retire. I don't want to take on any more missions. I think it's time for me to live my own life."

Rosen listened intently from inside the car. Barney wanted to retire? That was great! Barney would definitely have far fewer problems. Nobody wants a neighbor who's a powder keg.

"Barney, this is a CIA job. From what they've said, the price is up to us." Tull's voice was tempting, making Barney hesitate.

Retirement requires a lot of money. He had calculated the balance in his account, enough to allow him to live comfortably for several years.

But if he wanted to settle down on this farm, he would need to renovate the old house, repair the barn, get running water and electricity, and hire people to farm, which would put a lot of pressure on him.

Moreover, this farm requires a large sum of money to maintain every year.

The farm isn't producing anything now; he's just constantly putting money into it himself.

Barney suddenly felt that he might not have enough confidence to say "no" to such a generous task.

Before Barney could speak, Tull continued to tempt him, "Barney, we need money for a new car too. I saw a relatively new Panhead that cost me almost $20,000. It's in pretty good condition, just some parts need some finishing touches."

Upon hearing this, Barney's voice carried a hint of undisguised envy: "That price is quite reasonable."

He knew this old model; it was a classic Harley, with rugged and sturdy body lines and a unique engine sound.

He just didn't expect that Tull would find a new love so quickly.

"But this car needs further modifications, which will cost about $60,000..."

Barney paused for a second, thinking that Tull's new love interest was too expensive, much more expensive than hiring a girl.

He immediately changed his mind, "You should give up on it. That car is old enough to be your grandfather."

Tull chuckled on the other end of the phone, then straightened his tone: "Barney, let's talk about this job. It's up to you whether you want to take it or not. The CIA has the money ready; they're just waiting for you to bleed it out. They said money isn't a problem as long as the mission is completed. Barney, this is a big deal; your retirement pressure will be much less after it's done."

Barney did not answer immediately.

"I'll think about it some more." He paused, then added, "Could you help me postpone my reply?"

Tull didn't respond, but quietly reminded him, "I heard that the big rat in the trenches has also received the news. If you hesitate any longer, this job might fall into his hands."

After hanging up the phone, Rosen drove his newly acquired Mercedes-Benz G-Class behind Barney's old car, heading towards the farm.

Barney had actually given up hope on his motorcycle.

When they got back to the vicinity of the farm, Barney slowed down and finally stopped by the roadside. He rolled down the window and leaned halfway out to look at the wooden house surrounded by three excavators, whose buckets were tumbling up and down at the house, sending wood chips flying everywhere.

Barney stared at the house, somewhat dumbfounded. "You don't want this house anymore?"

Rosen also got out of the car. He didn't expect Liu Pei to work so quickly. It seemed that the demolition would be almost finished today.

Barney got out of the car, looked around for a while, and said to Rosen beside him in a surprised tone, "You don't want this house anymore? I saw it yesterday that could still be used if it were repaired..."

Rosen stood beside him. "Yeah, that house is in terrible condition, and it's been gnawed by bugs. I'm planning to tear it down and rebuild a bigger yard."

Rosen spoke eloquently about his ideas for the house.

Barney fell silent upon hearing this. He might have enough money in his pocket to build another house, but his investment in the farm would become even more strained.
