Farming Life Starting in Africa
Chapter 203 Fu Longsheng, ambushed
The house he bought on that plot of land was slightly better than Rosen's, but only marginally better. He originally planned to do some simple repairs and move in.
Seeing Rosen's extravagant spending, he was also envious, but the pain of not having money was now written on his aged face.
Men's competitive spirit knows no age. Listening to Rosen's plans, Barney felt he should work harder.
Otherwise, others might tell him to look for the reasons within himself, whether his income has increased over the years, and whether he has been working diligently.
Could he just shoot that guy's mouth off with one shot?
After saying goodbye to Rosen, Barney walked around his farm, thinking about how to plan his house. He especially considered his log cabin, deciding to rebuild it.
He agonized over it all afternoon, but in the end he drove 200 kilometers to Edinburgh, where Tours' tattoo shop was located. He had to go there in person to find out what the task entailed and whether it could really bring in a large sum of money.
The demolition of the house progressed much more smoothly than Rosen had expected. The three excavators worked in a clear division of labor, causing the house to collapse quickly, and all the construction debris was loaded onto trucks and hauled away.
Rosen confirmed that the workers didn't need his interference, then turned and walked to the G-Class parked by the roadside, started the engine, and drove along the dirt road toward the lake.
He hadn't had such a leisurely time in a while and wanted to experience the tranquil life in the countryside.
Rosen parked the car on a flat area not far from the lake. When he got out of the car, his feet touched the soft mud, and he felt a dry heat rising through his shoes, carrying the scent of grass seeds and soil.
He had already met his neighbor to the south. Although Barney didn't seem like a particularly enthusiastic person, he was at least quite friendly.
When the conversation turned to cars, he became much more talkative. As long as he wasn't one of his targets, Rosen figured that being neighbors with someone like that shouldn't cause too much trouble.
As for the family to the north, I haven't met them yet and don't know what kind of people they are. I hope they're not troublesome.
Rosen stood by the lake, hands on his hips, watching the water for a while. The lake was calm, and sunlight dappled across its surface. Several water birds stood on the shallows not far away, heads bowed, searching for food.
Looking at the shimmering lake, Rosen felt an urge to go for a swim.
But he held back; he dared not use human flesh to bait the fish in unfamiliar waters.
Who knows what's lurking beneath this seemingly calm surface of water, like a screenshot from a photograph? If it attracts some dangerous aquatic creatures, things will get messy. Instead of swimming, we'll be delivering takeout to the lake's inhabitants.
He looked around to make sure no one was there, then took things out of the capsule space one by one.
An oversized parasol was planted in the mud by the lake. When it was opened, it created a slight breeze and cast a dark, circular shadow on the ground. Then came a folding chair, a small table, a net bag for snacks, several bottles of ice water, and finally a hand pole.
Rosen had hung a local specialty on his fishing hook: dried wildebeest meat.
When he cast the fishing line into the lake, his movements were not very skillful. The fishing line drew an arc in the air before settling on the water in the distance, creating a small ripple.
He didn't bring any bait to use for baiting. Next time he'll have to go to Chinatown to buy some loaches. As long as he has enough bait, it shouldn't be difficult to have a great catch every day.
Rosen sat down in the chair, propped the pole on the stand, leaned back, and sank into the chair back, leisurely enjoying life.
A gentle breeze blew across the water, carrying the scent of dampness and the aroma of sun-baked grass. Occasionally, a few insects chirped, but the afternoon heat seemed to have suppressed their voices.
Rosen closed his eyes for a while, feeling his body gradually relaxing.
As the sun rose directly overhead, Fu Longsheng quietly approached along the reeds on the lakeshore.
He walked very lightly, leaning slightly forward to use the shadows of the reeds to conceal his silhouette.
Xi Meng found Lawson's information. The publicly available information was not comprehensive, but it at least confirmed that Sunshine Farm was indeed a recently purchased property, and Lawson was indeed its nominal owner.
The information looked authentic, but something seemed to be missing, making him feel that the information was a bit strange.
So today he decided to come and see for himself what Rosen was up to.
Fu Longsheng moved quietly along the edge of the reeds, and from a distance of about forty meters, he saw Rosen dozing in a chair.
He watched for a while but didn't find anything special. The scene looked ordinary, but he felt something was off, though he couldn't quite put his finger on what was strange.
Just as he was about to get a little closer, a sense of danger approaching was stimulating his intuition, carrying an indescribable chill that spread up his spine.
Fu Longsheng tensed all his muscles instantly, his gaze quickly sweeping across the nearby reeds and the edge of the lake, but he didn't find anything unusual. Rosen, on the other hand, was still lying there comfortably resting.
He trusted his intuition. Having spent so many years in extreme environments, his body had shielded him from countless real threats, and it wouldn't make a mistake like that.
Just two meters to his left, the water suddenly surged up as if something had pushed it from below, and then a nearly three-meter-long crocodile burst out of the water, heading straight for Fu Longsheng's arm.
The moment the crocodile's body leaped out of the water, water splashed everywhere, shattering like broken glass in the sunlight. Its open snout cast a wet reflection, and it moved so fast that Fu Longsheng didn't even realize what it was.
Fu Longsheng's body, honed through years of training, reacted faster than his brain. He raised his arm and turned to the side, the crocodile's mouth grazing his arm and missing its mark, but its body still brushed against Fu Longsheng.
The impact knocked him to the ground, and Fu Longsheng rolled to the side, slightly increasing the distance between himself and the crocodile. At the same time, he braced himself with his hands on the ground to regain his balance.
With a clumsy turn, the crocodile adjusted its body to face him, its limbs digging into the wet ground, as if it had re-locked onto its target.
Only then did Fu Longsheng get a clear look at the crocodile. Its grayish-brown back was marked with dark spots, its snout was narrow and long, and its body was thick and sturdy. Judging from its size, it should be a young adult American crocodile.
At this distance, Fu Longsheng could only concentrate on avoiding its attacks. If he turned to run, he couldn't outrun the crocodile in a short sprint, and even if he ran a few meters ahead, he would be caught up instantly.
