Farming Life Starting in Africa
Chapter 201 Buying a Car
This vehicle is overweight, weighing over ten tons, which isn't good for American highways, especially city roads, which are now covered in patches. Driving this thing on the road, even if you don't get stopped by the police, will damage the road surface, and the city will ask you for compensation, which will be a real headache.
He was about to jump off the running board when his gaze casually swept across a corner of the parking lot. He noticed a silver, boxy car standing out in the sunlight.
Rosen immediately became interested. He walked over and got closer to see that it was a retro Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG with a silver-gray metallic paint and a delicate sheen, indicating that it had been well maintained.
He walked around the car and looked it over; there were no scratches or dents on the body.
I peeked inside the car; the carbon fiber pattern on the steering wheel was clearly visible, and the seats were dark brown leather, looking about 90% new. It was the standard G-Class interior, very classy.
"How much is this one?"
Harry followed, his face beaming with a "you have excellent taste" smug look: "This is a classic luxury car here, a Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG. An old friend of mine left it here; he immigrated to Canada, and the car has been stored with me ever since. V8 engine, supercharged, all-wheel drive—it wasn't cheap when it was new. You know, these older G-Class models are becoming increasingly rare; finding one in good condition is practically a steal. I was originally reluctant to sell this car, but seeing how sincere you are…"
Rosen felt his ears getting hot halfway through the conversation and interrupted him: "Give me a price. If it's reasonable, I'll take it for a spin. If not, forget it."
Harry had clearly prepared a price, and his tone was decisive when he quoted it: "One hundred thousand US dollars. A classic 1999 model with only 80,000 kilometers on the odometer, it's an absolute gem on the market. In this year, with this mileage, in this condition, if you ask around, no one will offer a more reasonable price than me."
Barney, listening nearby, frowned. If the car had only driven 80,000 kilometers, it was indeed very good, and the paint looked brand new, but $100,000 was definitely not cheap. He glanced at the car, then at Rosen, but didn't say anything for the time being.
Rosen wasn't particularly sensitive to the price, and he didn't know the car's actual price either.
"Then I'll try out the car first."
Harry immediately beamed and hurried back to the store to get his car keys.
Barney then spoke up: "This price isn't cheap. With a little more money, you could buy a new G63 for 100,000."
"Let's check the car's condition first." Rosen stood next to the silver G-Class, lightly running his finger along the edge of the door to feel the smoothness of the paint, then bent down to examine the tire wear. "If it's not good enough, it's not like we can't negotiate the price. Let me check it out first."
This car would cost two to three million RMB in China, but he can get it for 100,000 USD here, and he's very satisfied.
Hearing Rosen say that, Barney stopped talking. It seemed that this Asian man was a wealthy guy, as he didn't seem to be very sensitive to prices.
He mentally reassessed his new neighbor and figured that Rosen was probably the son of a wealthy family in China, sent here to enjoy life.
A moment later, Harry came running over with the car keys in his hand.
Rosen took the keys, got into the driver's seat, adjusted the seat and rearview mirrors, started the engine, and the V8 engine roared. He shifted gears, lightly pressed the accelerator, and the car slowly drove out of the parking lot and onto the road outside.
The suspension was more resilient than he expected, providing clear support when cornering, and the interior was better sealed and quieter than he anticipated. The engine noise was suppressed by the sound insulation material, only revealing its rugged undertone when he floored the accelerator.
He drove straight for a while and was about to turn around when a police siren suddenly sounded from the side.
Rosen's fingers tightened slightly. Most Chinese people would instinctively feel a moment of tension and curiosity when they hear a police car siren.
He caught a glimpse in his rearview mirror of a white Chevrolet police car accelerating past him and speeding away.
Rosen breathed a sigh of relief once the police car had driven away. It seemed he also needed to adjust to the situation in the United States.
He turned around and drove back to the parking lot along the same route.
He had barely turned off the engine when Harry eagerly opened the car door for him. "How is it? Not bad, right? Let me tell you, this car is even more comfortable to drive than a new car. You can't find that old-fashioned linear feel of a supercharged engine in a new car these days."
Rosen got out of the car, not rushing to give an answer, but instead walking around the car again, as if making a final confirmation: "Not bad. But your price is a bit high." He paused, then added slowly, "I was referred by Mia from DT Precision Auto Modification and Repair. She told me that your price is negotiable."
Upon hearing the name, Harry visibly paused for a moment. "Oh? Mia? Oh well, for Don's sake, I'll give you a ten-thousand-dollar discount."
Barney, standing next to him, was taken aback. What had he just done at the repair shop? Had he gotten so close that he used someone else's name to buy a car? And even got such a big discount? He couldn't quite understand the young man's way of thinking.
Rosen nodded, glanced at Barney beside him, then turned back: "You answer my friend's questions first. We'll talk about the car after he's finished."
He didn't forget to do Barney a favor, even though the answer he was destined to receive was disappointing.
After learning that the boss had connections with the police, Rosen decided to spend money to save himself the trouble.
Getting a driver's license here is quite troublesome. You need to provide a lot of materials, and then take a written test and a road test in sequence. The procedures are complicated and time-consuming, and it takes about two months to get a driver's license. He obviously didn't want to spend two months in the United States dealing with this.
Harry patiently listened to Barney's story from beginning to end. Barney recounted the entire incident of his motorcycle being stolen, detailing the time, location, color, and any modifications on the motorcycle.
After listening, Harry asked a few more questions about the details before finally saying, "I can only inquire about this for you. At least at the police station, I haven't found any new car thieves. I'll contact you if I have any information."
Barney had no choice but to place a business card on the table, with his name and phone number printed on it.
Rosen then mentioned the driver's license application to Harry again, suggesting that it should be done as soon as possible to avoid being pulled over and having to explain things for ages. Harry didn't refuse, but requested a fee of ten thousand dollars.
