Chapter 280 Emery Revisited

"I'll pay you back as soon as this is over!" George said earnestly.

"Whatever. I originally planned to pay off your loan by ripping off Holding, and now that the loan is gone, I'll just consider it repayment!" Connor shrugged and said nonchalantly.

George forced a smile. His father had noticed his actions. Although George's heart sank, he understood that this was actually expected. After all, as the family heir, he had many people around him arranged by his father to help him take over the family business.

Although he had tried his best to investigate while maintaining secrecy, word still leaked out. Fortunately, judging from what Connor said, the old man seemed unaware that he already knew about Olson's wizarding talent and thought he could fool him with the trick of sending Olson to the New World and never having to come back!

As the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed. George was still worried about how to get money to hire an assassin without attracting the old man's attention after he discovered his actions. Connor's 10,000 gold pounds solved his immediate problem. 10,000 gold pounds is a huge sum of money, enough to fight a war with a thousand people!

"Be careful. Don't look for assassins in Rune. Spend more money and find one in the capital. Your old man has some experts around him. Just now, when he threatened to burn down my apartment if I didn't tell, three Grand Knights plus a guy who was far more terrifying than a Grand Knight locked onto me!" Connor solemnly reminded George.

"Connor, is that guy you mentioned, the one who's even more terrifying than the Great Knight, the one wearing a green cloak?" Hearing Connor's reminder, George seemed to have thought of something and asked in return:

"I don't know. I only know he was locking onto me, warning me not to act rashly, but I couldn't detect his figure!" Connor said with some regret. He was confident that if he released his mental energy, coupled with the amplification from the silver pendant, the lurking figure would be exposed. However, it was clear that Connor couldn't do that in a banquet setting…

Upon hearing Connor's words, George didn't say anything more. The two chatted about other things for a while before George took his leave.

Having finished all his complicated affairs, Connor, in his apartment, resumed his usual research on how to overcome the three major hurdles of alchemical golems.

A week later, with the help of the auxiliary chip, Connor had basically overcome the first hurdle in creating the alchemical golem after continuous simulation. He had developed a simple and intelligent mana rune that could give the alchemical golem a powerful ability to be mass-produced.

Having successfully overcome the first hurdle, and with Connor's spirits greatly encouraged, ready to press on and conquer the remaining two challenges, he encountered a problem. He simulated hundreds of methods in the auxiliary chip to reduce the energy consumption of the magic stone, but the results were all unsatisfactory. Connor tried everything he could, but at most he could only save five percent of the energy consumption. This five percent was completely insignificant compared to the effect Connor had envisioned. As time went by, he remained stuck in a predicament where he could not find a technological breakthrough. Connor's patience gradually wore thin, and his mentality became increasingly impatient.

Realizing that his current mindset was no longer suitable for continuing his research, Connor made a rational and decisive decision to suspend his research. Coincidentally, he was also out of groceries in his apartment and needed to go shopping, so Connor, who was in a bad mood, decided to go to the mall for a shopping spree to clear his mind!

Pushing his shopping cart, Connor searched through the dazzling array of goods at Empire Department Store for items that piqued his interest. He would grab anything that caught his eye without even looking at the price and put it directly into his cart. In no time, Connor's shopping cart was already full.

With Connor's current level of cultivation, he could live for a long time without food or water, but Connor enjoys the pleasure and satisfaction that food brings him. It is one of his few hobbies, and Connor has no intention of giving it up!

Just as Connor finished paying for the first load of his shopping spree, loaded the goods into the carriage he had hired, and was preparing to return to the Empire Department Store for another shopping spree, Connor's line of sight happened to catch sight of a figure.

That was someone who didn't know Connor, but Connor knew him, and in a sense, Connor owed a debt of gratitude to him for having so many powerful enchanted items. That's right, he was the previous owner of the alchemy furnace in Connor's hands—Mr. Emery.

Upon seeing Mr. Emery's appearance, Connor's eyes instantly and subtly focused on him. Mr. Emery was not surrounded by bodyguards and servants as he usually was, and his clothes and appearance were also quite different from his usual self. If Connor hadn't done a lot of research on him while studying how to steal the alchemy furnace, he would never have believed that the ordinary-looking middle-aged man in front of him, who seemed to be shopping at the Imperial Department Store, was the famous Rune tycoon, Emery.

At this moment, Mr. Emery, disguised as a middle-aged man, seemed to be searching for his favorite items on the shelves, but his eyes betrayed his true thoughts. His attention was not on the goods at all; he was constantly observing the flow of people around him out of the corner of his eye. Connor felt that he was probably waiting for someone to appear. Realizing this, Connor immediately hid and secretly observed Mr. Emery's every move.

It's highly likely that Emery is connected to the Secret Society, something Connor is pretty much certain of. So Connor is very curious about what Mr. Emery is doing right now. He's in this state, which clearly means he's doing something shady. Is Emery waiting for someone from the Secret Society to meet with him?

Another point that intrigued Connor was his vivid memory of the threatening gray-clad man he'd dealt with at the Kepa Tower that day. It was undoubtedly Herrera, the Grand Knight under Emery's command. Herrera's transformation from an ordinary Grand Knight into that bizarre figure was something Connor felt was definitely connected to Emery. All of this made Connor extremely interested in Emery...
