Chapter 134 Citywide Manhunt
Chapter 134 Citywide Manhunt
"Is Bishop Constantine alright?" Connor squinted, probing Officer Rhodes in front of him. Although Constantine had been killed by Bispin long ago, the Storm Church had not announced Constantine's death to the public.
At this moment, Connor deliberately brought up Constantine instead of asking about the Storm Cathedral, naturally wanting to indirectly learn about the situation there. The fact that the Upper House, Lower House, and City Hall of Rune had jointly signed a citywide arrest warrant and that the military police were searching the eastern district confirmed Connor's suspicions.
Last night's massive explosion definitely hit the Storm Cathedral!
Rhodes glanced at him with a half-smile, seemingly sensing the probing intent in Connor's words. He hesitated for a moment before saying, "I haven't seen Bishop Constantine!"
"Old fox, are you going to see him underground?" Connor cursed inwardly, knowing he wouldn't get anything out of Officer Rhodes, so he stopped wasting his breath and focused on eating his breakfast.
After fussing around in Connor's apartment for more than ten minutes, the military police finally returned to Rhodes' side, with one of them even whispering in Rhodes' ear.
Without even using his mental powers, Connor knew what the military policeman was whispering with Rhodes. Leaning back lazily on the sofa, swirling his wine glass, Connor said casually, "What's the matter? Can't you just say it openly? As a nobleman, alchemy is my hobby, so I bought a few things. Is there anything wrong with that?"
"No!" Inspector Rodri smiled and nodded at Connor, then said with a slight apology, "Mr. Connor, we're just doing our job. Please forgive us!"
"I understand, I understand!" Connor stood up, a polite smile on his face, and extended his right hand.
"We have official business to attend to, so we won't bother you any longer!" After shaking hands politely with Connor, Inspector Rodri took his leave.
Watching Officer Rodri's departing figure, Connor downed his Romano Conti in one gulp.
The reason he dared to openly display his alchemy laboratory to the military police under Inspector Rhodes was firstly because he carried with him all materials related to enchanted items in his laboratory. Secondly, among the imperial nobles, who were well-off and had nothing to do, some indulged in debauchery, some indulged in nightly revelry and sensual pleasures, while some with strong curiosity were immersed in all sorts of strange alchemy experiments.
Although the latter is not common among nobles, it is a hobby that everyone has heard of. For example, Mr. Allegri, the current Minister of Finance in the cabinet, and Rear Admiral Millican of the Naval Equipment Department are well-known alchemy enthusiasts. Among nobles, it is perfectly acceptable to talk about alchemy experiments openly, without fear of being questioned.
Just as Connor was hesitating about whether to go to the Imperial Department Store to contact Margaret and see if she was still alive, his expression suddenly changed, and he reached out to touch the spatial ring on his hand.
A piece of notebook paper emitting white light instantly appeared in Connor's hand!
Once the white light on the notebook faded, Connor could clearly see Reyes's handwriting on it.
"The fireworks display last night was pretty spectacular, wasn't it? The game has begun, Connor. If you think you need it, the safe house in the Sassuolo dock warehouse basement you visited last time is a good option. The way to open the safe house door is..."
After carefully reading every word of the message from Mentor Reyes on the telepathic note, Connor took a deep breath and made up his mind to go to the safe house to take refuge. The current Loon is clearly a volcano, and the explosion of the Storm Cathedral has already ignited this volcano.
After leaving the apartment and hanging a sign on the door indicating that the owner was out, Connor, dressed casually, did not head directly to Sassuolo Port. Instead, he walked towards the Imperial Department Store in the heart of the East End. Confirming whether Margaret was still alive was something he had to do before seeking refuge.
Connor frowned slightly as his gaze swept across the heavily armed military police and the sharp-eyed plainclothes officers with bulging waistbands on the streets. If the East District, a wealthy area of Ruen, was being searched so thoroughly, one could only imagine how intense the searches were in the other three districts, North, South, and West!
Upon arriving at Imperial Department Store, Connor clearly noticed that the once bustling largest department store in Loen had seen its customer traffic decrease by at least two-thirds compared to usual. Observing this, Connor quietly entered the Imperial Department Store.
As soon as Connor arrived at Jennifer's boutique, he noticed the young female store manager, Leonie, explaining something to a pair of female customers.
Upon Connor's arrival, the young female shop manager showed no surprise. She subtly gave Connor a look, signaling him to go back into the small room from before.
After Connor went into the small room, Leonie followed him in about three to five minutes later.
"Margaret told me to tell you that she is alive and unharmed. When the explosion happened last night, the main force of the Storm Church and a number of its high-ranking members were out on a secret mission. The explosion at Storm Cathedral only killed some of the staff who stayed behind and some clerical workers! She suggested that you stay at home these days!" Without wasting any time with Connor, Manager Leonie got straight to the point.
Hearing Leonie's message, Connor's heart trembled, but he didn't show it on his face. After a moment's thought, he said to Leonie, "Tell Margaret to protect herself. I'm going somewhere to lay low for a while!"
"I've relayed your message!" Leonie nodded gently.
"Just these few items, shopkeeper, pack them all up for me!" Knowing what he wanted and to avoid being detected, Connor pretended to shout loudly in the small room, casually pulling a one-pound note from his wallet and handing it to Leonie.
Leonie instantly understood Connor's gesture. She retrieved two or three brand-new sets of lingerie from the small room, packed them into elegant boxes, and handed them to Connor. As Connor was leaving, she sweetly said to him, "Welcome back next time!"
After leaving the Imperial Department Store, Connor did not hesitate any longer and went straight to the carriage shop to rent a carriage before hurriedly setting off for the port of Sassuolo.
