The Silent Bookstore Manager at Hogwarts
Chapter 15 Requires the Hunter's Keenness
The History of Magic, a course taught by a ghostly professor named Binns, is known for its boredom and hypnosis; in fact, Professor Binns's teaching style can only be described as tragic.
The inexplicable pauses and drawn-out endings completely killed any desire to listen to what he was saying. In addition, the characters he described were all difficult to remember, so most of the first-year wizards lost their attention after listening for only a short while.
"Red, my scar... it actually reacted on the first day of school."
Harry sat down next to Red. Ron was fast asleep with his head on his books, so he came over and, while taking notes of the key points Professor Binns was lecturing, chatted with Red about what had happened to him.
"Why didn't you say so sooner... You should know the cause of your scars, and you should be very clear about what it means if it reacts."
Red was stunned. The scar Voldemort had inflicted on Harry was documented in the books, but now it was reacting. Regardless, this was a potential danger, a danger that could threaten Harry Potter's life. Yet, Harry had only mentioned it during Tuesday's History of Magic class, on the first day of school.
"Because... when I remembered it that day, we had already started reading 'The Locksmith's Dream,' and I had forgotten about it."
Harry paused for a moment, realizing he hadn't really noticed the importance of this matter, and had even forgotten about it while learning from Red.
"And then, I suspect Professor Snape... because when he looked at me that day, my scar really reacted." Harry stated the root of his suspicion with certainty. On the day of the Sorting Ceremony, he clearly felt a malicious gaze, a gaze that made his scar ache with unease. But at that time, only Snape, who seemed to be chatting with Professor Quirrell, looked at him. So Snape naturally became Harry's first suspect.
"Harry, do you have concrete evidence?"
"No, that's precisely why I find it troublesome. If it really is Professor Snape..." Harry shuddered. He didn't think he could stand up to a professor, especially if the professor wanted to do something to him.
"Harry, I'm asking you, if you were to hunt prey, what would you do?"
"Conceal your presence, then strike a fatal blow."
Harry answered instantly, immediately realizing what was happening.
"That's right, Harry. It seems you've remembered the Colonel's teachings. You're right, if it really is malice that can make your scar react, then the most likely possibility is undoubtedly that legendary... Mysterious Man."
To prevent their conversation from being overheard, Reid chose a more cryptic vocabulary.
"If the mysterious man wanted to kill you, do you think he would swagger around and say, 'I'm going to kill you,' even after he's already been beaten to pieces?"
Harry remained silent. If it were him, the killing intent and malice would only burst forth at the moment of the attack, serving as a catalyst to kill the target. Hunters should be patient, cunning, and stealthy. This was a rule summarized by the Colonel, who was the protector of hunters and soldiers. It was also one of the things he had learned after sparring with Red for half a year.
"Sometimes, superficial malice doesn't mean anything, Harry. We've already noticed the danger lurking around you, so what we need to do next is..."
"Quietly identify the danger and then deal with it."
Harry instantly understood what he should do. Although he still couldn't rule out Professor Snape's involvement, Harry no longer considered Snape as his primary suspect. If Snape really wanted to do something to him, he wouldn't have shown such blatant attention that would only increase suspicion.
"It's not about getting rid of it, Harry. We don't have the power to do that right now. Letting someone more suitable handle it is a good idea."
Reid stopped writing, and Professor Binns's narration remained very dull.
So Harry began to write.
"What we need to do is get the professors to handle the danger for us. After all, they have guaranteed the safety of Hogwarts. If you are threatened, the most important thing to do, besides getting stronger, is to report them to the professors and make good use of their power."
Harry nodded. Red looked around. The History of Magic, which was taught by all four houses together, was almost completely empty-handed. Gryffindor was almost entirely wiped out, and Slytherin wasn't much better off. Rakwenlaw, on the other hand, seemed to be doing relatively well.
"Damn it, I can't pick out the key information at all. I feel like every word Professor Binns says is important."
Harry scratched his head, his pen moving incessantly, and had no time to reply to Red. He had no idea how Red managed to listen to the lecture and take notes at the same time.
So Reid quieted down and let Harry deal with the information Professor Binns had thrown out. This was one of the things apprentices needed to learn. Books that recorded great arts often contained a lot of information that needed to be filtered and discerned. If Harry learned it haphazardly, it might cause problems.
At the end of History of Magic, Harry took a deep breath, put down his quill, and uttered those words with a hint of disbelief.
"I actually... listened to the whole thing?"
Just as Harry said this, Ron suddenly woke up, looked at the pages of the book that had been soaked with his own saliva, and then looked at Harry, who had somehow ended up sitting next to Red. He turned his head in confusion, saw Harry, and then spoke.
"Harry, is get out of class over?"
Harry nodded helplessly. They still had Herbology class with Hufflepuff, so Harry wasn't in a hurry to finish telling him everything. They would have more opportunities to chat later.
"Speaking of which, besides you, that Miss Hermione also seems quite hardworking and dedicated."
"Sigh, don't even mention it..."
Harry seemed reluctant to discuss the matter, so Red didn't say anything more. Although he had already finished reading "The Locksmith's Dream: Light Through the Keyhole," Harry didn't have his talent and needed more time to understand these things. So Red didn't want to disturb Harry's thinking time.
So the group immediately rushed from the History of Magic classroom to the greenhouse, which was their Herbalism classroom.
The professor for this course was none other than Pomona Sprout, the headmistress of Hufflepuff and a gentle witch.
"Alright children... In this lesson I will teach you how to process the most basic medicinal herbs. Don't rush, take your time."
