Chapter 6 Farm
After the goal was set, everyone adjourned the meeting.
A group of people, carrying repair tools, began working intensively to temporarily repair the damaged urban armor of the Xinghuo. The sounds of metal clashing echoed throughout, and the flashes of welding sparks were constant.
Li Xin and Lu Chen curiously examined something.
A wallet found on the corpse of a smoking giant.
The wallet is made of leather, and the edges are worn and white, with most of the metal clasp rusted.
As an item belonging to a giant, it was also ridiculously large. A crane was needed just to get it onto the deck.
The two of them worked together to pry open the rusted clasp and open the wallet.
There wasn't much stuff inside; it was just a scattered layer.
The most conspicuous items were several crumpled banknotes, with small denominations and a bearded giant resembling a leader printed on them.
Secondly, there was a flimsy matchbox and a few crumpled, cheap cigarettes.
At the very bottom was a folded time record card with crooked handwriting and dates that ran from the beginning to the end of the month, without missing a single day.
The back of the record card was crammed with densely packed text, the characters obscure and difficult to decipher, ranging from two to five characters, seemingly different people's names. Following each name were numbers ranging from tens to hundreds, presumably representing debts.
As he watched, Li Xin's expression subtly changed.
The image of an ordinary worker, struggling to make ends meet and working tirelessly day and night, vividly appeared before his eyes.
Lu Chen curiously examined the inside of the wallet.
"Hmm, there seems to be something else in this hidden compartment?"
As he spoke, he laboriously pulled something out from deep within the interlayer.
After seeing what it was, the two fell silent.
It was a black and white photograph of a family of three. The edges were worn and faded, and the image was somewhat faded, but it was still clearly visible: a smoking giant stood in the middle with his hands on his hips, a bright smile on his face. Beside him was a woman with a gentle smile, and next to her stood a little girl jumping and laughing.
Lu Chen stared blankly, then suddenly realized something, and his shoulders began to tremble uncontrollably.
"us......."
Li Xin patted his shoulder and gently shook his head.
"This is not something we should care about."
Even so, some emotions were churning uncontrollably within him.
It took them a minute or two to calm down.
"Speaking of which, I didn't expect Giants to even have photos," Lu Chen exclaimed. "Although they're in black and white, that's quite a level of development."
"Yes," Li Xin agreed, "maybe they'll even make a black and white film."
After the exchange, Lu Chen continued to examine the wallet and its contents with great interest.
As Li Xin's deputy, he was about the same age as Li Xin, both around twenty-four or twenty-five years old. He had assisted Li Xin with many matters on a daily basis, and the two were more like friends than superior and subordinate.
His only hobby is studying the ecological environment and native organisms of each world, and even the original civilizations.
While observing, he couldn't help but cough.
"Cough, cough! I have to say the air quality in this world is really terrible! I reckon our throats will be in trouble in a few days... By the way, lord, the new batch of potatoes will take another week to grow."
Li Xin sighed sadly.
"I know."
Mobile cities not only integrate survival, migration, and combat, but also allow for the construction of production facilities, cultivation of fields, and animal husbandry. In areas with favorable conditions, they can even achieve self-sufficiency.
However, the conditions on their own Xinghuo ship were too poor. They didn't raise any chickens, ducks, cattle, or sheep; they only grew drought-resistant and easy-to-grow crops like potatoes.
Based on the current inventory, each person won't even get one potato a day until the next batch is harvested.
"There's no other way, I guess I'll just have to try and tough it out..."
He stopped abruptly halfway through speaking the new words.
New scenery appeared ahead.
It was a farm.
It was small and dilapidated, exuding an aura of economic downturn.
A crooked wooden fence enclosed it. The main house was a single-story wooden house with peeling white paint on the exterior walls and several collapsed steps on the porch, which were simply propped up with bricks.
Behind the main house is a barn, and there are no other buildings in sight—the farm owner probably put the livestock shed and the warehouse for storing produce together to save money.
Because it was the dwelling place of giants, the farm was also ridiculously large. The outer wooden fence was like a towering tree, and the main house and barn were as big as mountains.
From time to time, the bellowing of livestock could be heard from the barn, the sound as fierce as thunder, and it seemed to tremble faintly in the air.
As Li Xin gazed at the granary, a thought suddenly occurred to him.
There must be plenty of vegetables, fruits, meat, and eggs stored there. Considering the size of the giants, even a single piece of meat would be enough to feed them all.
If you take more and save it up, it can not only last through this world, but even several worlds.
Not only that, but you can also complete a second task at the same time.
A few minutes later, the well-prepared Spark slowly sailed into the farm.
On the deck, everyone was tense, intently watching their surroundings. No one spoke; only the dull thud of city tires rolling over the dirt filled the air.
As they passed the main house, everyone's hearts were in their throats.
To their surprise, there was no one in the house.
The farm owner appears to be out.
Relieved, Li Xin subconsciously glanced around the room.
There were only a few rooms in the house. In the living room, there was a worn-out small sofa and an old-fashioned television with an antenna next to it. A three-bladed ceiling fan was hanging from the ceiling.
His gaze lingered on the television set for a few more seconds.
They even have a television now.
So the giants already possess signal transmission technology? Does that mean that broadcasting, communication networks, and even some form of modern civilized order exist in this world?
When they came to their senses, the Spark had already arrived at the entrance of the barn.
The barn was not locked; the two huge wooden doors were ajar, with a gap between them.
Given the physical limitations of humans like Li Xin, it was naturally impossible for them to push the door open and enter. The only solution was for the Starfire to accelerate and push the door open.
Upon entering, the first thing you're greeted by a strong, nauseating stench of fish and mutton.
Many people on deck immediately covered their mouths and noses, and some couldn't help but gag.
Li Xin frowned, enduring the smell as he began to examine the granary.
He soon found the warehouse he had envisioned: rows of heavy wooden shelves piled high with things—chicken and duck eggs as big as millstones, neatly arranged on straw, milk in tin buckets, and baskets of vegetables and fruits.
Not only that, but there was also a row of animal meat hanging on iron hooks next to him.
His eyes lit up. With so much grain, if stored carefully, it would be enough to eat for several years!
But his gaze quickly turned serious.
Because the road leading to the warehouse was lined with a large herd of free-range giant livestock.
Chickens and ducks were scavenging in the haystacks, cattle and sheep were lying in twos and threes in the middle of the aisle, and there were even a few pigs rooting around under the meat racks—the farmer had obviously not made any plans and had simply turned the barn into a mixed-species farm.
