Mortal Transformation into Immortal
Chapter 2 Spiritual Bones
In the early morning, sunlight streamed through the broken windows and shone on the child sitting on the haystack.
The child's eyelashes trembled slightly as he rubbed his eyes and slowly woke up.
"It's already this bright."
Looking up at the outside, Yu Ling stretched lazily.
Then, as usual, he picked up the pottery jar and looked inside, hoping that a spiritual bone would grow out today.
"Um?"
His gaze fell upon it, and he noticed something white inside.
Before he could even see what it was, the thing crawled out from inside and scurried into his clothes, crawling all over him.
"what!"
Yu Ling screamed in fright.
He jumped up immediately, patting himself all over.
"Snapped!"
Suddenly a crisp sound rang out, and Yu Ling froze instantly upon hearing it.
The earthenware pot rolled down the haystack and shattered into pieces.
Yu Ling was instantly struck dumb.
That sturdy, ancestral earthenware jar had become so fragile that it shattered.
"No, no..."
Yu Ling was devastated and immediately knelt on the ground, helplessly gathering all the fragments together with her hands.
He was trembling uncontrollably.
This was his hope of becoming an immortal, but now that the pottery jar is broken, what will he use to become an immortal?
Just as he knelt there blankly with empty eyes, a white centipede appeared on the fragments.
Yu Ling recognized that this was the white figure that had crawled into her clothes from the jar earlier.
At the same time, a special feeling of blood connection arose in my heart.
"Could this be the 'spiritual bone' that grew out of the pottery jar?" A bold thought arose.
Yu Ling's eyes lit up again, and she slowly reached out to touch it.
The centipede crawled up from my fingertip to my palm and curled up.
Yu Ling looked at it curiously.
"Is this what spirit bones look like?"
This thing grew out of the jar and was so close to her. The shadows and haze in her heart were instantly swept away. Yu Ling was so excited that tears welled up in her eyes.
"Father, Mother, Little Ling has made it! Little Ling has 'spiritual bones'! Little Ling has the hope of becoming an immortal!" He was so excited that he cried tears of joy.
"After I find some insects to eat, I'll go to the city to find the immortal," Yu Ling thought to herself, wiping away her tears with her sleeve.
Some large towns have places set up by immortal sects to recruit disciples.
Yu Ling went to the ruins to find food. Only after eating her fill would she have the strength to continue her journey. The white centipede lay motionless on her arm, very obedient.
"There's so much food here."
Yu Ling said, chewing on a worm.
"Crunch...crunch..."
Just as he was enjoying his meal, he heard footsteps treading on the rubble in the distance.
Yu Ling looked up and saw three people walking towards her.
He became alert and quickly ran to another building to hide.
"Oh no, they must think I'm a monster and they're here to get rid of me." Yu Ling was terrified and hid her whole body under a broken bed overgrown with weeds.
Over the years, he wandered around like a lame stray dog, searching for food, and was often bullied as a monster.
The footsteps grew closer and closer, finally stopping a short distance away.
Yu Ling knew he had been found.
"Kid, come out quickly. Don't worry, we mean no harm."
A soft female voice came from inside.
Yu Ling crawled out with some skepticism.
"I'm sorry, I scared you all, brothers and sisters. I'll leave right away, but don't worry, I'm really not a monster," Yu Ling said softly.
"Little boy, why are you eating insects?" the woman asked.
Yu Ling remained silent. This was a secret that could not be told. Her father had said that the matter of seeking immortality could not be revealed to anyone, otherwise it would not work.
"Are you hungry? Eat this."
The woman took out some pastries from somewhere and handed them to him.
Yu Ling instantly smelled the tempting aroma of the food and instinctively swallowed. Ever since he took the earthenware pot, he hadn't eaten a single bite of this kind of food.
Although he really wanted to eat it, he kept shaking his head and refusing, saying, "Thank you, sister, I'm not hungry."
He was afraid that if he ate it, the "spiritual bone" that had grown with great effort would run away.
Chen Dongting walked up to him and asked softly, "What's your name?"
"My name is Yu Ling," Yu Ling replied.
"Yu Ling," Chen Dongting murmured, then asked, "is he a seeker of immortality?"
"Ah!" Yu Ling was shocked; her secret had been discovered, but she still stubbornly insisted, "No, no."
"Don't be afraid, it's all over. Little Ling, you are now a person with spiritual bones. You don't need to eat insects like before. Come with us, we will take you into the immortal sect," Chen Dongting said to him earnestly.
"Are you... immortals?" Yu Ling asked in a low voice.
"That's right, we're here to guide you in cultivating immortality."
Shui Yao said with a smile, and with just a flick of her finger, several tiles on the ground floated up.
"Ah..." Yu Ling stared in shock, then immediately knelt on the ground after realizing what had happened: "Greetings, Immortal Master, greetings, Immortal Master."
"No need to be so polite."
Chen Dongting gently raised his hand, and an invisible force lifted Yu Ling to stand up.
"Little cricket, can we eat now?"
Shuiyao gave him the pastries.
However, Yu Ling still shook his head. He dared not eat it before becoming an immortal, fearing that he would destroy the hard work of three generations at this final moment.
"Can I see the centipede in your hand?" she asked curiously.
"Sister, look!"
Yu Ling extended his hand in front of her.
"Senior Brother Chen, do you know what kind of spirit insect this is?" Shui Yao asked the person next to her.
Chen Dongting examined it carefully and shook his head, saying, "I know quite a lot about spiritual herbs, but I don't know much about spiritual insects."
"Now it's just an ordinary insect, you can't tell anything about it," Qian Li said.
"Immortal Master, is my 'spiritual bone' just an ordinary insect?"
Yu Ling panicked. How could an ordinary insect become an immortal?
Shui Yao laughed and said, "Little Ling, this is not your spirit bone. The spirit bone is the bone in your own body. Your original bone absorbed the spirit of this insect and became a spirit bone. After you start cultivating, the spirit bone can absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth to make immortal blood, thereby nurturing magic power."
"So that's how it is."
Yu Ling finally understood what it meant to grow spiritual bones.
"Little Beetle, this insect is now just an ordinary creature. You don't need to carry it with you all the time. You can throw it away," Qian Li reminded her.
Yu Ling came to her senses and looked at the centipede in her hand. She felt a strange sense of familiarity, a feeling she had only ever experienced with her parents before. She was reluctant to part with it, so she shook her head and said, "Immortal Master, I'll keep it with me."
"Childlike mentality."
The three of them shook their heads.
"let's go."
Chen Dongting waved his hand lightly, and something flew out from the distant mountains.
After soaring through the air once, it landed in the ruins, stirring up a strong wind.
This is a giant crane that is two zhang (approximately 6.6 meters) tall!
Yu Ling stared blankly at the huge creature in front of him.
The three laughed, and with him they leaped up and sat cross-legged on the crane's back.
The crane spread its wings, cried out, and soared into the sky.
As Yu Ling watched the town below shrink smaller and smaller, an instinctive sense of fear and unease welled up inside her.
"Little cricket, don't be afraid, you won't fall," Shuiyao reassured him.
"Immortal Master, where are we going?"
Yu Ling nervously looked around.
"The Purple Sun Immortal Sect," Shui Yao replied with a smile.
"Immortal Sect... Immortal Sect..."
Yu Ling clenched her fists excitedly.
"Little Ling, do you still have any relatives?" Chen Dongting asked.
Yu Ling thought for a moment, then shook her head and said, "Grandpa is dead, and my father and mother are dead too. I have no relatives left now."
He actually had some relatives, but those people had long since avoided his family like the plague.
The group wasn't surprised; if they truly had relatives, they wouldn't be catching insects to eat all by themselves.
The group chatted idly on the crane's back.
Endless mountains swept past below.
