Dark Eldar
89 The Illumination of the Halo
The elders from another world were no ordinary people; they sensed something was amiss.
"Benjamin VI, now that you are a high-ranking mage, what is the furthest distance you can reach by opening a portal?" Elder Schopenhauer asked his disciple.
"I haven't tried it yet, but I think I should be able to reach the 'Summit of the Multiple Worlds'! Elder Schopenhauer."
"Okay, I understand." Schopenhauer slowly closed his eyes and, like the other elders who were "sitting in a circle," began their day of practice.
(Secret: "There are 38 elders in this other world who meditate on various worldly problems for many years. In reality, they are 'maintaining' a large-scale 'order sequence array'; even they themselves are unaware of it.")
After being promoted to a new high-level mage, Benjamin didn't take on any missions and spent his days "resting" with his masters. Sometimes, his thoughts would drift back to scenes from the exams.
"Deep within the rift, the terrifying Akarin cast some unknown spell. How did I even think of her? That assassin girl, Rona of the 17th Legion? I was just playing around with her, what's going on..."
"What's wrong, Benjamin? You seem preoccupied today?" Elder Schopenhauer asked with concern.
"I don't have a master; I'm just learning new magic," Benjamin replied, not daring to reveal his true feelings. (Privacy)
"Benjamin, you are now a high-level mage. You no longer need to be as restrained as before, staying here to cultivate. If you wish, you are free to travel around as you did before," Elder Schopenhauer said. His earlier question about the "distance of magical portals" was actually a hint to Benjamin. After all, becoming an elder in the future would depend on his own efforts.
"It seems the six high-level mages selected this time are indeed largely unqualified," Elder Schopenhauer thought to himself. He admitted his earlier misjudgment. He felt:
"Apart from Edward III, the rest—Priestess Nami returning to her hometown to 'flaunt her wealth'—will inevitably get into trouble sooner or later. Wolverine John has completely become Wolfd's puppet, obedient to his every whim. Priest Stern is relatively well-behaved; after all, they have their own faith (totem). As for young Benjamin? He's just starting out; I think he needs more experience! He lacks courage and responsibility..." Elder Schopenhauer, as a respected elder from an "other world," still possessed his own extraordinary "insight."
(If it weren't for the efforts of the elders from the "other world," the entire multiverse would have gradually descended into "endless war" and "disillusionment"...)
Benjamin VI stubbornly believed the elder was testing him. He chose to remain seated as before, obediently on the cushion behind Elder Schopenhauer, motionless. For a mage, meditation was indeed a fundamental skill. Loki couldn't sit for long. Edward III was already used to it. Benjamin, needless to say, had been in Schopenhauer's mage class since he was a novice mage. (The "elite class" – novice mages with exceptional talent were discovered early on and given "special training").
The number of novice "otherworldly" mages remaining is not very large (around 500). Elder Schopenhauer abolished this special "elevation" system 200 years ago. Originating from the "rise" of dark forces!
There was no time to focus on training intermediate-level mages. Over the years, the only intermediate-level mages he had trained included Benjamin VI, Kato (a Gango), Little Smith, Aina (female), Wells, and a few other younger children. These novice and intermediate mages all looked up to Edward, Benjamin, and John, diligently practicing "meditation," hoping to advance quickly and become even more powerful "characters." (Loki is excluded from the "honor roll" because his achievements were entirely due to his own efforts; he quietly collected materials and secretly forged his "artifact.")
The admiration and awe from his fellow students, to some extent, also constrained Benjamin VI and even Edward III. They were unwilling to leave this "other world," this "land of glory," and the glow of its "halo."
