Dark Eldar

6. Elders in the Temple

The true "Holy Spirit" is fearless. Dark Knight's binding magic is effective against Loki, who is not a "Holy Spirit".

Ordinary people are even less likely to be affected. Only the Holy Spirit can be immune!

"A dull Holy Spirit, and a long-lived Holy Spirit," were Loki's words of mockery and sarcasm before he left.

The Holy Spirit has another honorific title in the other world: "Elder".

Edward III returned to the other world. On the way, he thought about many things.

"Loki is so annoying. Why is he always in my way? And yet he always manages to get away with it? And me? I'm working so hard, practicing the Holy Spirit's path..." These kinds of questions only come to Edward's mind when he sees Loki. If Edward spent his days with the elders, "freezing time" and "preaching," he wouldn't have any worries, day after day, year after year.

In Edward's eyes, becoming a great Holy Spirit, a revered "Holy One," was his ultimate belief! Yet, he would waver slightly whenever he saw Loki...

A solemn temple hall. Dozens of elders sat around a massive circular stone staircase, eyes closed in meditation. Most of them had white hair; some were Kimo, werewolves, dwarves, elves, fire spirits... and a few appeared as children, presumably through magic that reversed aging. In a corner, several beautiful women sat quietly in another sealed-off space-time; they were the guardians of "Eden"...

The elders no longer cared about what was happening in this world or in this time and space. When Edward III returned wearily, he simply knelt back down on the cushion below the steps, not daring to say a word. He would only answer if the elders asked him a question.

Most of the Holy Spirit Elders are in a state of "secondary detachment" (safe mode), allowing them to easily assist Loki and travel effortlessly from one end of the universe to the other. Some of them, in their youth, must have accomplished feats even Loki couldn't! For example, Elder Sun Yun, closest to Edward, had reached the pinnacle of meditation! In the epic war against the Demon Realm in the 3rd century BC, he captured the terrifying Demon King Yoda in the desolate wilderness of the "Dawn Domain." Many other even greater deeds exist! Due to the vastness of history, even the ancient books are now tattered, yet the heroes of yesteryear still breathe in the temple, and "order" is continually altered (in secret) by generation after generation of elders! As for their former enemies? They have long since been ruthlessly "eliminated"...

A very few elders of the Holy Spirit, in their long periods of boredom and emptiness, chose to "fall," becoming new enemies! Or enemies of enemies. After all, sometimes even the Holy Spirit dares not say that his judgment is correct or comprehensive.

Therefore, the temple elders all remained "silent and reserved," unwilling to speak much. They believed that too much talk would lead to mistakes.

Perhaps they were tired, and talking would deplete their already limited "spirit".

Edward III was utterly insignificant compared to the saints mentioned above. Edward himself couldn't understand why they could live for tens of thousands of years without dying.

"What are they waiting for?" Edward III asked himself as he knelt beneath the temple.

"What's wrong, young man?" Elder Sun Yun spoke, his voice low and his eyes closed. As his name suggests, Elder Sun Yun was a traditional Asian senior master. He was skilled in swordsmanship, exorcism, the Daoist way of nature, the concept of Boundless Heaven, the principle of one begets two, two begets three, three begets all things, and the I Ching, among other things.

Centuries ago, the young Edward became Elder Sun Yun's apprentice simply to learn the powerful illusion technique of "freezing time." He was once "clever" enough to believe that "by mastering time, one can do whatever one wants and act with impunity."

Elder Sun Yun knew perfectly well that Edward III's motives were impure, yet he still taught him.

Now, as time passed, Edward III gradually came to understand: "Even if you control time, you are powerless! What will happen in one second will still happen in ten seconds, and even if you delay it for a century, a full 100 years, it will still be 'useless'... Just like if you eat an apple today, a pear or other fruit will grow again tomorrow..."
