Elegy from Another World

Chapter 4 The Shackles of New Life

Chaos, boundless chaos.

Consciousness, like fragments sunk in the deep sea, slowly reformed. The first sense to return was touch—a heavy, unfamiliar pressure spread throughout my body. I struggled to open my eyelids, which seemed glued together, and my blurred vision gradually cleared.

Something... is lying on me.

The next second, I fully regained consciousness, followed by immense shock and astonishment. What greeted my eyes was not the cold white walls of a hospital, nor the ethereal otherworld I had anticipated, but... a scene that absolutely did not belong to the real world. The architectural outlines were so soft as to be unreal, the air was filled with a strange floral fragrance, and most importantly, everything I saw, including my own body, possessed a vivid, animation-like texture.

The world of anime... I've finally arrived in the anime world I've always dreamed of!

An indescribable surge of joy rushed to my head, and I almost burst out laughing. My dream, the dream I desperately cried out for at my sickbed, had actually come true in such an unexpected way!

However, this ecstasy lasted only a moment before being replaced by the extremely awkward and dangerous reality before me. I quickly realized that my new, vibrant body was caught in an involuntary, intense physical entanglement. More than one unfamiliar figure with a dreamlike face surrounded me, the atmosphere ambiguous and thick. Instinctively, I wanted to resist, to stop this sudden intimacy, but the alarm bells of reason immediately rang.

"Stay calm! We absolutely cannot reveal ourselves!"

I, an outsider, someone who has taken over another's soul, know nothing of the rules of this world. Any abrupt action that doesn't fit my "current role" could be seen as heresy, leading to unpredictable consequences, even... death. Keeping a low profile and surviving are my top priorities.

So, I forcibly suppressed my inner panic and discomfort, choosing to submit to the "ritual" this body was performing. I immersed myself in this unfamiliar rhythm, playing the role assigned to me. At first, it was merely a disguise for survival, but gradually, a long-lost, surging torrent of senses washed over my consciousness. The primal life force carried by this young body, and the yearning for "feeling" itself that had been suppressed for most of my life, flooded my rational dam like a burst dam. I was lost, sinking into this pure and intense life experience, until my consciousness was once again swallowed by darkness.

……

I don't know how much time passed before I awoke to a chill in the air.

Moonlight streamed through the iron bars high up, casting cold, dappled patterns on the ground. I found myself lying on a makeshift bed in a stone room, the air thick with the smells of mildew and dust. It felt like a prison cell.

By the moonlight, I examined my body. My fair skin was covered with various marks—bruises, scratches—making me look somewhat disheveled. Strangely, I felt no pain whatsoever. An ominous premonition welled up inside me, and I tentatively bit the back of my hand lightly with my teeth.

There was no stinging pain as I had expected.

What came was a chilling, twisted pleasure.

I was stunned and increased the pressure until I tasted a faint metallic rust between my teeth—my skin had been broken. However, the pain signal seemed to be hijacked and transformed by some force, and what was fed back to my brain was still a progressively unsettling pleasure.

The pain... disappeared? No, it was transformed into pleasure?

After a brief moment of shock, a tremendous sense of relief washed over me. For me, who had been enduring the torment of illness day and night in the final moments of my life, a body incapable of feeling pain was simply the best gift God could give me! This was undoubtedly another pleasant surprise, in addition to the realization of my dreams.

I struggled to sit up and looked around. There was nothing there, no mirror, so I couldn't see my own face. I took a deep breath of this strange air, a complex emotion welling up inside me. I knelt on all fours, in an almost reverent posture, and whispered to myself:

"Anyway, thank you, Nameless God. Thank you for allowing me to be reborn in another world and fulfill my long-held dream..."

Then, I sat down cross-legged and began to calmly analyze the situation. Since I've come to this world, logically I should possess the kind of ability seen in anime or games—that thing called a "system."

With a mix of anticipation and trepidation, I lowered my voice and tried to utter that familiar word:

"Status".

As if responding to my call, a semi-transparent, shimmering, and technologically advanced interface instantly and clearly floated before my eyes.
