Grassroots lawyers also have their day
Chapter 18 is such a headache!
After marriage, the couple's relationship was so-so. They were both busy with work and had little communication. In addition, they had been married for more than three years without having children. The husband was narrow-minded and suspicious. He always felt that his wife's frequent overtime work was abnormal and that she must be having an affair. So he would follow her every few days.
One evening, the company hosted a dinner for clients. The woman, a senior executive and project manager, had to attend. The deal was closed, and everyone was happy. That night, she drank a few too many drinks. As she left the restaurant and went down the steps, she tripped and almost fell. A male colleague nearby rushed over and helped her up.
The man, who had been staring at the restaurant entrance from his car, happened to witness this scene and was immediately consumed by jealousy. He stormed out of the car, ran up to the woman, pointed his finger at her, and berated her for being shameless and flirting with other men.
The woman was stunned by the scolding and her mind was in a mess. There were customers, her colleagues, and her boss present, making it extremely awkward. In the end, her colleague called the police to stop the man.
After that, the couple had a complete falling out. The woman didn't want a divorce, but the man acted like a madman, causing trouble at her company whenever he had free time, making her too ashamed to show her face at work. In the end, she had no choice but to resign.
Fortunately, the woman's company leader knew his subordinates well and knew that she was not that kind of person. He did not approve her resignation, but gave her three months' leave to settle her family affairs before returning to work.
After a period of cold war, the woman finally sued the man for divorce. Regarding the division of assets, the woman was very generous; the house and car would go to the man, as long as he stopped bothering her and disrupting her life.
In the woman's words, her marriage was a nightmare, and she only wanted a divorce; she didn't care about anything else.
After the middle-aged female judge struck the gavel, the trial officially began. The man had not hired a lawyer, and the two sat in the courtroom in silence, as if they were strangers.
After Wang Chuan stated the plaintiff's claims, the middle-aged female judge asked the defendant to respond.
The man wore thick glasses, had messy hair, looked somewhat颓废 (颓废 is a difficult word to translate directly, but it conveys a sense of listlessness, apathy, and apathy), and his clothes were full of wrinkles, clearly having not been changed in a long time. He was quite overweight.
The man, sitting in the dock, looked somewhat humiliated. Only after repeated urging from the middle-aged female judge did he whisper, "Judge, ...I agree to the divorce."
Wang Chuan was taken aback; he hadn't expected the man to agree to a divorce so quickly. Director Niu's eyes also showed surprise; clearly, he hadn't anticipated the man's swift agreement either.
"Since both parties agree to the divorce, plaintiff, what joint property do you two have?" The middle-aged female judge breathed a sigh of relief and asked coldly with a stern face.
If both parties agree to divorce, the only remaining issue in a divorce case is the division of property, which makes things much simpler. After listening to the defendant's explanation, the middle-aged female judge felt much more relieved.
For so many years, this middle-aged female judge has been handling divorce cases. She has witnessed too many breakups and reconciliations, and she has long since given up on being a savior. She has become numb! Since they are not compatible, the sooner they separate, the sooner they can be reborn. She can close a case, all three parties are happy, and life is so wonderful!
"There's a Mercedes-Benz, an apartment in XXXX, furniture and appliances are all listed, and there's also the diamond ring the defendant gave to the plaintiff..." Wang Chuan read through the list of joint property, item by item.
"Alright, no need to read anymore. It's just these things on the list of marital property, right?" The middle-aged female judge interrupted Wang Chuan impatiently.
"Yes," Wang Chuan said.
"Defendant, please take a look at the list of marital property provided by the plaintiff. Do you have any objections?" the middle-aged female judge asked the man.
"No objections! That's it!" the man said in a low voice after glancing at the list.
"Plaintiff and defendant, have you reached an agreement on the distribution of the assets listed in the property inventory?" the middle-aged female judge asked.
"No..." the man said.
"Judge, apart from their respective bank accounts and clothing, the plaintiff agrees to give all other property to the defendant." Wang Chuan glanced at the woman, who nodded.
Wang Chuan wasn't worried about the woman changing her mind later, because the property distribution plan was clearly written in the previous case record, and the woman had signed it.
"Defendant, do you agree?" the judge asked.
"..." The defendant remained silent for a long time.
When Wang Chuan looked up at the other side, he saw the defendant secretly wiping away tears.
Seeing that the defendant remained silent, the middle-aged female judge, looking impatient, pressed again: "Defendant, what do you think? Say something, give me your opinion!"
"Ah..." This time, the defendant stopped secretly wiping away tears and burst into loud sobs.
Wang Chuan, Lao Niu, and the woman, sitting in the plaintiff's seat, were stunned by the man's actions. The middle-aged female judge was also taken aback.
"Do you think it's easy for me? I've worked like a slave for so many years, just wanting to give her a good life, but she..." The man became more and more heartbroken as he spoke, wailing and crying in court as if everyone had done something to him in front of the court.
"Defendant, control yourself!" the middle-aged female judge hurriedly shouted, then added, "Defendant's lawyer, try to persuade him..."
Halfway through her speech, the middle-aged female judge realized that the defendant had not hired a lawyer at all, and only then did she realize the importance of having a lawyer.
Seeing that the middle-aged female judge was at a loss with the weeping defendant and didn't know what to do, Director Niu hurriedly said, "Defendant, please pay attention to court discipline. If you cry again, the bailiffs will take you away."
Judge, we demand that the defendant be disciplined for this disruptive behavior in court!
"Defendant, you heard that too. If you keep crying, I will have to suspend the court session and let the bailiffs in..." After the middle-aged female judge finished speaking, she gave Lao Niu a barely perceptible nod, as if to express her gratitude.
After all, she was a judge, and aside from a verbal warning, there wasn't much she could do. Besides, the defendant's crying had already upset her. Thankfully, Old Niu's reminder had given her a much-needed insight.
Just then, the courtroom doors opened, and two bailiffs rushed in: "Judge, is there something you need?"
"How did you get in here? We're having a trial in progress," the middle-aged female judge said to the bailiffs at the door.
"We heard someone crying loudly in the courtroom and thought something had happened." Two bailiffs then glanced at the defendant, who was wiping away tears and sobbing.
The man, startled by Lao Niu and the judge, and seeing two bailiffs rush in, immediately stopped crying. He sat in the defendant's seat with a look of terror in his eyes, his shoulders shaking and sobbing. This big fat man weighing over 200 pounds looked like a wronged little wife.
"Defendant, calm down," the middle-aged female judge said coldly, her face expressionless. But in her heart, she had already despised the man a thousand times over.
"Okay...okay," the man said, trembling.
"Alright, that's all. You can go out now!" The middle-aged female judge looked at the bailiffs at the door.
"It's good that everything is alright. If you need anything, just call us..." The bailiff glanced at the defendant and retreated with a look of disdain.
"Judge, I'm unemployed, have no savings, and still have to pay my mortgage. She fell for another man and dumped me without any compassion... I... I'm so wronged!" The man said, on the verge of tears again.
"Okay, stop crying. Clerk, get him some tissues." The middle-aged female judge was really exasperated!
