Apocalyptic Hoarding Diary
Chapter 332 Rocky Beach
From this distance, she couldn't hear what they were shouting, but she could guess that something must have happened down below.
Some of the soldiers rushed to the edge of the crevice and shouted down.
Some grabbed walkie-talkies and shouted something at the top of their lungs, their faces turning bright red.
Some people took turns pulling the rope, pulling quickly and urgently, with several people working together.
Xu Xiaoyan's heart clenched suddenly.
She disregarded everything else, pressing the binoculars firmly against her eyes and staring at the crack in the ground.
The rope was shaking violently, and people were climbing up below. Soon, the first soldier was pulled up.
He was a young soldier, his face covered in soot, coughing incessantly, and needing support to stand.
Then came the second and third people, each of them with faces covered in soot and coughing so badly they couldn't straighten up.
One of them was even pulled up by a rope; his legs were limp, as if he were injured.
Some people carried the wounded to the side, some went over to check their injuries, and some were still shouting into walkie-talkies. The entire riverbed edge was in chaos.
The officer-looking man rushed over, squatted down next to a wounded soldier, and quickly asked a few questions.
The wounded man struggled to say something, and pointed towards the crack in the ground.
The officer's expression changed. He stood up, waved his arm, and shouted something.
Immediately, all the soldiers sprang into action, and everyone ran towards the vehicle.
The wounded were carried onto the vehicle, and their equipment was thrown onto it. The ropes were left lying on the edge of the crack in the ground, not even having time to be retrieved.
With the roar of engines, one military vehicle after another started up, turned around, and accelerated forward.
Xu Xiaoyan paused for a second, then quickly started the car.
The civilian vehicles in front had also reacted and started up, following the military vehicles forward. Everywhere there were the sounds of engines, horns, and shouts.
As she passed by the crack in the ground, she couldn't help but turn her head and take a look.
What's down there?
Despite having a million questions in her mind and a million thoughts running through her head, she pressed the accelerator hard, following the flow of traffic and leaving the crack in the ground far behind.
Around 5 p.m., the sun had already begun to set in the west, but the heat showed no signs of abating.
The military vehicles had already driven to the vicinity of a tributary mudflat.
It's called a mudflat, but it's actually dry. It used to be a tributary of a river, but now all that's left is a dry riverbed and piles of rocks on both sides.
When Xu Xiaoyan first saw the pile of rocks, her heart skipped a beat.
The stones, large and small, were piled together, some the size of a fist, some the size of a watermelon, and some even half a person's height, lying haphazardly on both sides of the riverbed.
Now, the convoy has to navigate through these jumbled rocks.
The military vehicles ahead began to slow down, one after another driving into the rocky area.
Those heavy military vehicles have high chassis and large tires, so they drive relatively steadily, but the civilian vehicles behind them are in a terrible situation.
Xu Xiaoyan witnessed a car drive in ahead, its entire body suddenly tilting to the side, and its chassis slamming heavily against a rock with a loud bang.
The car lurched forward, then veered to the other side, its tires getting stuck between two rocks, spinning several times before finally freeing themselves.
She took a deep breath, gripped the steering wheel tightly, and followed the car in front of her.
As soon as she entered, she knew that the road was even worse than she had imagined.
The stones weren't flat at all; they were piled up haphazardly, some pointed, some round, and some even had sharp edges.
When a wheel runs over a rock, the whole vehicle tilts to one side. Before it can straighten itself, another wheel on the other side runs over another rock, causing it to tilt to the other side as well. It wobbles and sways, and could tip over at any moment.
Xu Xiaoyan gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, her palms sweaty.
She silently thanked the modifications countless times. If it weren't for the four military-grade anti-skid tires and the reinforced chassis, she wouldn't have been able to drive on this kind of rocky road at all.
Her vehicle's tires were now firmly planted on the rocks, bumping along but not slipping. However, even with the modified vehicle, this road was still difficult to drive on.
Suddenly a huge rock appeared in front of her, and she quickly turned the steering wheel. As a result, the wheel ran over a round rock, and the whole car veered sharply to one side.
It's going to roll over! In that instant, her heart almost stopped.
Xu Xiaoyan instinctively steered the wheel in the opposite direction, gripping it tightly and not daring to loosen it even a little. The car veered to its limit before slowly straightening itself.
The whole process took less than two seconds, but those two seconds felt like an eternity.
Cold sweat broke out and covered her face. She gasped for breath, her palms sweaty and sticky as she gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles turning white.
The car behind her honked, urging her to hurry up.
Xu Xiaoyan didn't bother wiping her sweat; she took a deep breath and continued driving forward.
The journey through the rocky area continued, with one rock after another, one pit after another, and one bump after another.
She dared not relax, dared not be distracted, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.
A car next to her wasn't so lucky; it was a van with a low chassis and small tires, completely unsuitable for this kind of road.
She witnessed the car hit a large rock hard, the whole car jumped up, then tilted to one side and overturned on the ground.
People screamed and crawled out of the car; there were men, women, and a child.
They stood there, helplessly watching the overturned car.
As he watched the cars drive by, the expression on his face changed from fear to despair, and then from despair to numbness.
No one stopped, not even Xu Xiaoyan.
She glanced at it briefly, then looked away and continued staring at the road ahead.
Finally, the road ahead began to become smooth.
The boulders gradually disappeared, replaced by fine sand and hard soil. The wheels no longer wobbled but rolled steadily forward.
She let out a long breath, and her tense body slowly relaxed.
The sun had completely sunk below the horizon, and in a little while, it would be completely dark.
But the military vehicle in front kept driving on, showing no sign of stopping.
Xu Xiaoyan glanced at the time—6:47 PM. Usually, the convoy would have stopped to rest by this time.
But today, ever since that terrifying incident at the crossroads in the afternoon, the military vehicles have been speeding forward.
What happened to those soldiers? Why did the officer, after glancing at the wounded soldier's gesture, immediately order a full retreat?
Although she didn't know the cause and effect, she knew one thing: it was no small matter that could cause such panic in a well-trained army.
At 8 p.m., the convoy finally stopped.
Xu Xiaoyan also turned off the engine.
She didn't get out of the car immediately, but sat in the car for a while, listening intently to what was happening outside.
After waiting a few minutes and confirming that nothing was amiss, I opened the car door and got out.
