Apocalyptic Hoarding Diary

Chapter 331 Dry Riverbed

Xu Xiaoyan gripped the steering wheel tightly, didn't let go of the accelerator, drove past them, chose to go around the stuck car, and continued driving forward.

In the rearview mirror, the family of four was still standing there.

The man was still trying to push the cart, while the woman, holding two children, stood by the roadside, watching the cars drive by, one after another, but no one was willing to stop.

Xu Xiaoyan withdrew her gaze and continued to stare at the road ahead.

As the cracks multiplied, she had to be more careful and focused, gripping the steering wheel tightly with both hands, never daring to relax for a moment.

After driving for a while, we saw several more stranded cars ahead.

A bread cart was leaning to one side of the road, with two wheels stuck in a crack. The people on the cart were trying to lift it up with a jack.

An SUV fared even worse, with its entire front end embedded in a large crack.

There was also a small truck loaded with belongings, which were now scattered everywhere. The owner was frantically unloading things, probably trying to lighten the load and get the truck out.

With each stranded car she passed, Xu Xiaoyan's heart sank a little deeper.

She didn't stop; she just gripped the steering wheel tightly, carefully maneuvered around the desperate people, and continued driving forward.

Ahead, the army convoy was almost out of sight; only the faint dust and the occasional engine noise reminded her which direction to take.

She quickly stepped on the gas and sped up.

After driving for a while, Xu Xiaoyan realized that something was wrong.

Even though it was past noon, when the sun was at its most intense, it still hung brightly in the sky, showing no sign of letting up.

The sun was so strong that the car roof was scorching hot, the steering wheel was burning hot, and the sweat on her forehead kept coming back up after she wiped it away.

The back of my clothes was soaked through, sticking to my body and making me feel incredibly uncomfortable.

At first, she didn't take it seriously, thinking that it was just hot and she could just open the window to let in some fresh air. Then she realized she was wrong.

The wind did blow in, but it was hot, like it was blowing from an oven, carrying dust and blasting in head-on.

Not only did it not cool her down at all, it also blew the car full of fine dust, making it impossible for her to open her eyes. She quickly rolled up the window.

No, this method won't work.

Sweat streamed down my forehead and down my cheeks, making my neck itch.

She wiped it with the back of her hand, but her hands were also covered in sweat, and the more she wiped, the stickier it became.

She had already taken off all her clothes except for a T-shirt, but her collar was still soaked with sweat, sticking to her chest. It was hot and stuffy, and if this continued, she would definitely get heatstroke.

With no other option, she reached out and pressed the air conditioner switch. A gust of cool air immediately blew out of the vent and hit her face. In that instant, she felt so comfortable that she almost cried out.

It's cold, really cold.

Turning on the air conditioner costs a lot of electricity, but in this terrible situation, she has no other choice.

Xu Xiaoyan looked up at the roof of the car, thinking about how the solar panel was working silently, converting sunlight into electricity and continuously supplying it to the battery box in the trunk!

The solar panel she got in exchange for three bottles of liquor was such a great deal! If it weren't for it, she wouldn't dare to run the air conditioner so recklessly. Solar panels are free; as long as there's light, there's electricity.

While enjoying the cool breeze from the air conditioner, Xu Xiaoyan mentally calculated the battery level.

She has three large battery boxes. Once they are fully charged, she will switch to another one and use them in a cycle. As long as the sun doesn't stop, she will have a continuous supply of power and will definitely be able to reach her destination!

Actually, it doesn't matter if the battery box runs out of power, because she has a diesel generator in her space!

However, unless we're at our wits' end, there's no need to use it. If someone targets us, the consequences could be dire.

She tries to keep a low profile and avoid attracting attention whenever possible.

Xu Xiaoyan leaned back in her seat and turned the air conditioning down a bit. The cool breeze blew gently, and the sweat on her forehead slowly dried, making her feel much more comfortable.

The world outside the car window was still a desolate ruin; the cracked ground, the crooked buildings, and the withered plants looked even paler in the sunlight.

In some places, hot air was billowing out from the cracks, distorting the air and making distant scenery blurry.

The cars in front kept driving on, one after another. Xu Xiaoyan glanced at the rearview mirror again.

There were many other cars behind, some with luggage strapped to their roofs.

Some cars have trunks so full of belongings that they can't be closed.

Some car windows have sunshade foil pasted on them, all sorts of different kinds.

She looked away and continued driving.

An hour later, the convoy stopped at the edge of a huge, cracked, dry riverbed.

Xu Xiaoyan also braked and turned off the car.

The military vehicles in front were parked in a row one after another, and the civilian vehicles behind them also stopped one after another.

Some people got off the bus to look around, some stuck their heads out to look ahead, and some even stood on the roof of the bus to see what was happening.

Xu Xiaoyan did not rush to get off the bus.

She sat in the driver's seat, took out the children's binoculars from her storage compartment, and looked out through the windshield.

The riverbed was so dry that it cracked into countless pieces, with cracks crisscrossing and densely covering the entire riverbed.

In the middle of the riverbed, there was a dark crack in the ground, much larger than the other cracks. When sunlight shone on it, the light seemed to be swallowed up, and nothing could be seen.

Several soldiers stood on the edge of the riverbed, discussing something over the crack in the ground.

Xu Xiaoyan adjusted the focus of the telescope to zoom in on the image.

They were several soldiers in camouflage uniforms, carrying equipment on their backs and holding some instruments in their hands.

A person was holding a rectangular box and pointing it towards the crack in the ground, seemingly measuring something.

Another person was holding blueprints, pointing at the crack in the ground while looking at them, his mouth opening and closing as if he were saying something.

A man who looked like an officer was standing next to him, his hands on his hips, also looking towards the crack in the ground.

After watching for a while, the officer waved his hand, and immediately a squad of soldiers began to move.

They unloaded ropes, seat belts, descenders, and some other equipment that Xu Xiaoyan couldn't name from the vehicle.

Those people moved quickly and skillfully; they were clearly well-trained.

About three minutes later, several fully armed soldiers fastened their seat belts, checked their equipment, and stood on the edge of the riverbed.

One by one, they began to rappel down.

The rope was stretched out very long, and the figures of the soldiers quickly disappeared into the darkness, leaving only the rope swaying slightly.

Time passed second by second, and the soldiers stood still, staring at the crack in the ground, motionless.

People around the civilian vehicles in the distance also quieted down, no longer speaking, and just watched from afar.

Xu Xiaoyan also stared at the crack in the ground, her palms sweating as she gripped the binoculars.

Suddenly, soldiers on the edge of the riverbed began pulling the rope back.
