Apocalyptic Hoarding Diary

Chapter 333 Karst Landforms

It seemed the wind was picking up; she put on her coat and looked in the direction of the military vehicles.

The military vehicles had also turned off their lights and were parked in complete darkness a few hundred meters ahead.

By the faint starlight, I could see someone walking around the car; they must be the sentries on night duty.

Elsewhere, the civilian vehicles were also quiet, with only one or two occasionally having their lights on, presumably someone tidying up inside.

Just as she was about to get back to her car, she suddenly heard a hushed voice next to her.

"...Have you heard? About what happened this afternoon."

Another voice asked, "What is it?"

"I have a relative who works in logistics at that crevice. He said the team that went down there ran into big trouble."

"What's the trouble?"

"I don't know. I heard that the last one they brought in is still unconscious, and the military doctors are at a loss."

"What's down there? Poison gas?"

"I don't know, but look at the military vehicles, they're running faster than rabbits, they're definitely not good stuff."

"So what do we do? Keep following them?"

"What can we do if we don't go with them? Go back? Going back will only mean certain death."

There was a moment of silence.

"Forget it, stop talking and go to sleep early. Who knows how long we'll be on the road tomorrow?"

The two voices disappeared.

Xu Xiaoyan stood there, listening to those words, her heart sinking even deeper.

Back in the car, she locked the doors, reclined the seat, wrapped herself in her sleeping bag, and forced herself to sleep.

At 6 a.m., the military vehicles started on time.

Xu Xiaoyan was quickly awakened by the sound of the car engine in front of her. She sat up groggily, having not slept well all night and having many strange dreams.

She took a sip of water, started the car, and continued driving forward, following the car in front.

The road was easier to travel today than yesterday; there were no loose rocks or large cracks, just a flat stretch of Gobi Desert.

At noon, the convoy stopped for a rest.

Xu Xiaoyan got out of the car to stretch her legs and observe her surroundings.

This is an open area with nothing around it. In the distance, there are a few low hills, barren and devoid of even a blade of grass.

The military vehicles were parked on a slightly higher slope, arranged in a fan shape. There were far fewer soldiers beside the vehicles than yesterday, probably because some of them had been sent out for reconnaissance.

As she was watching, she suddenly heard a commotion.

It came from the military vehicle.

She squinted and looked in that direction.

Several soldiers were gathered together, with something lying in the middle. Some were shouting something, while others were running around, as if they were picking something up.

Soon, someone ran over with a stretcher and carried the person up.

Another wounded soldier?

Her heart tightened.

The news spread quickly.

Several drivers nearby were chatting together, and she leaned over to listen.

"I heard someone else had an accident last night."

"What is it?"

"That wounded soldier who came up from the crack in the ground suddenly became unwell this morning. He was coughing very badly and had a fever."

The military doctor examined him and said that something had gotten into his lungs, and that there were no surgical options available to remove it.

"Something got into your lungs? What is it?"

"I don't know, I heard that the people who went down were all like that, maybe they all..." The man didn't finish his sentence, but the meaning was clear.

Xu Xiaoyan stood to the side, listening to these words, and a chill ran down her spine.

Something got into my lungs! Could that black ash not be ordinary dust, but some kind of deadly substance that can get into the lungs?

At 1 p.m., the convoy continued its journey.

The next few days were very regular. We set off at 6 a.m. every morning, rested for an hour at noon, and stopped to spend the night at 8 p.m.

News about the riverbed fissures gradually spread.

It is said that the condition of those wounded is getting worse, and two of them are already dying.

It is said that the military doctors could not identify what it was and could only isolate it temporarily.

It is said that the army has changed its route, avoiding all areas where there might be fissures in the ground.

As Xu Xiaoyan drove, she listened to the rumors, and her unease grew.

She makes good use of the solar panels and replaces the battery box every now and then to ensure that the accumulated electricity is sufficient for use.

The stewed dishes in the space also came in very handy. Whenever I was hungry, I would just take out a box, open it, and eat. It was convenient and effortless.

On the afternoon of the sixth day, the convoy suddenly slowed down.

Xu Xiaoyan looked ahead and could vaguely see the shadow of a mountain in front of her.

The mountain wasn't high, but it stretched endlessly. It was still barren, with nothing but exposed rocks and a few withered plants.

The military vehicles began to drive towards the foot of the mountain.

She gripped the steering wheel tightly and followed the car in front, heading towards the mountain shadows.

The closer you get, the clearer you can see that those mountains are typical karst landforms!

At the foot of the mountain, there is a huge cave entrance.

The cave entrance was at least ten meters high and several tens of meters wide, pitch black, with traces of water erosion along its edges, but now it has dried up, leaving only deep ravines.

The military vehicle stopped at the entrance of the cave.

Xu Xiaoyan also stopped and looked over through the car window.

Several soldiers carrying instruments and blueprints went in and out of the cave entrance.

Someone was measuring something, someone was recording something, and someone was throwing cold fireworks into the cave, watching the white light roll deeper into the cave.

She took out the children's binoculars and looked carefully.

The soldiers were much more careful than before, each wearing a gas mask and protective suit, completely covering themselves up.

Some people carried oxygen cylinders, while others held detectors. They were all very careful with every step, seemingly having learned from their previous experience.

Time passed second by second.

As the sun began to set, finally, someone emerged from the cave.

They removed their masks, said something to the officer, who nodded and then waved.

The military vehicles began driving into the cave.

Xu Xiaoyan paused for a moment, then quickly started the car and followed the car in front.

The closer you get to the cave entrance, the dimmer it gets, and a cold wind blows out of the cave, carrying a damp smell.

Her car followed and drove into the cave entrance. In an instant, everything around her turned dark, with only the car headlights illuminating a small patch of road ahead and the taillights of the cars in front of her.

Above us was a high cave ceiling, with stalactites hanging upside down in the distance. On both sides were rock walls covered with some unknown moss.

The cave was very quiet, so quiet that the only sound was the wheels of a vehicle rolling over the ground.

Xu Xiaoyan gripped the steering wheel tightly, her eyes fixed on the car in front of her, not daring to relax for a moment.

The cave was much larger and deeper than she had imagined; after nearly twenty minutes of driving, they still hadn't reached the end.

Sometimes the passage narrows, allowing only one car to pass at a time.

Sometimes it opens up suddenly, like a huge underground plaza.

The temperature is getting lower and lower.

She closed the window and turned on the internal air circulation. The solar panels were no longer needed, but luckily she had three storage tanks.
