Apocalyptic Hoarding Diary
Chapter 330 Ground Cracks
Some drove right up to the collapsed buildings and parked close to the walls.
Some drove right under the huge "GG" sign, using that pitiful shadow as cover.
Some simply drive under the piers of the overpass, where it's much cooler.
Xu Xiaoyan didn't rush to make a move.
She slowed down first, then took something out of the backpack on the passenger seat—a children's telescope.
She raised her binoculars and looked in the general direction of the military vehicle.
In the footage, military vehicles were parked next to a cluster of collapsed buildings; there were trucks, off-road vehicles, and even a few armored vehicles.
There were people in camouflage uniforms moving around next to the car. Some were inspecting the vehicle, some were moving things, and some were gathered in twos and threes, probably discussing something.
Their movements were swift and orderly, clearly indicating that they were well-trained.
She watched for a while, memorized the positions of the cars and the surrounding terrain, then put down her binoculars and began looking for a place for herself.
After driving through a field of ruins and around a leaning building, she suddenly froze.
Half a sign was visible in the roadside ruins.
The sign was made of sheet metal, rusted beyond recognition, and sat crookedly in a pile of rubble, the words on it blurred and illegible.
But after careful examination, she still recognized a few strokes—panshi…welcome…
She had an impression of the city of Panshi.
She had once read a travel guide on her phone that introduced Panshi.
The article said that Panshi is famous for its karst landforms, with various caves, underground rivers, stone forests, and sinkholes.
The cave also contains stalactites of all shapes and sizes, which are particularly beautiful. The article is accompanied by many pictures, showing colorful lights shining on the stalactites, making it look like a fairyland.
She even thought that she must go and see it if she had the chance.
Now, she stands amidst the ruins of Pan City.
Karst landforms, caves, underground rivers—these words swirled in her mind for a while, then suddenly connected into a single line.
Are the troops here looking for underground caves?
Probably!
The underground caves in karst landforms are often connected to underground rivers. Where there are underground rivers, there is water. Aren't they coming out to find water sources?
If an underground river can be found in the cave, then the problem will be solved.
Moreover, the cave itself is a natural shelter, warm in winter and cool in summer, secluded and safe, much better than camping on the ground. The more she thought about it, the more she felt it made sense.
No wonder the army is heading in this direction!
They weren't wandering aimlessly; they had a purpose. They knew that Panshi had karst landforms, that there were caves, and that there might be water inside the caves.
So, they came.
Thinking of this, Xu Xiaoyan felt inexplicably calmer.
With the army leading the way and so many vehicles following behind, they'd have to be careful not to harm the enemy.
Even if some people wanted to cause trouble, they wouldn't dare to act recklessly in front of the army.
The order should be maintained for a while; at least for now, it's safe.
She comforted herself and continued driving until she found a relatively intact building and parked her car in its shadow.
Turn off the engine, engage the handbrake, and lean back in your seat.
She put down the binoculars, leaned back in her seat, and closed her eyes, but her mind couldn't stop racing.
Will the army take everyone in, or will they only send their own people in?
If the army goes in, what will happen to the convoys behind them? Will they follow, or will they stay outside?
If things really get chaotic, she can find a secluded place to hide. After all, she has her spatial ability, a bow and arrow, and has even practiced some martial arts skills. In a one-on-one fight, it's still uncertain who will win or lose.
As she thought this, a bitter smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
She laughed at herself for still thinking about these things at a time like this, but there was nothing she could do. This was how she survived; only by being fully prepared could she increase her chances of survival.
An hour later, the army began its march.
Xu Xiaoyan was dozing off in her seat, but she was a light sleeper and soon woke up, grabbing her binoculars and looking in the direction of the military vehicle.
The vehicles that had been parked quietly began to move, one after another emerging from the shadows of the buildings and merging back into the barely passable road.
She pulled the seat up, started the car, and stepped on the gas, speeding forward.
The traffic started moving again.
The vehicles that were scattered around resting rushed to squeeze onto the main road.
Some cars cut in line, some honked their horns, and some nearly collided; the shouts and engine noises mingled together.
Xu Xiaoyan didn't care about any of that. She kept her eyes fixed on the SUV in front of her, stepped on the gas and followed, afraid of being left behind.
She hadn't driven far when she realized something was wrong.
The ground has changed.
When I arrived at noon, although there were ruins and cracks everywhere, at least the road was still passable.
But now, after a whole afternoon of scorching sun, those cracks that were originally just tiny cracks have come alive and are expanding wildly.
She glanced out the car window and felt a chill run down her spine.
The ground is covered with cracks, big and small, long and short, deep and shallow, and these cracks are continuing to expand.
She gasped.
Is this cracked from sun exposure? Did the sun crack the ground?
Without thinking twice, she gripped the steering wheel tightly, stared intently at the road ahead, and began frantically turning the wheel.
Turn left, circle right, turn left again, circle right again—thanks to the four newly replaced large tires, her small truck weaves through various cracks.
But other cars weren't so lucky. Not far ahead, a silver sedan suddenly veered to the right, and the whole car sank down abruptly.
Xu Xiaoyan watched helplessly as its right front wheel sank into a crack.
The crack wasn't very wide to begin with, but the driver probably didn't see it clearly and drove straight through it, resulting in his wheel getting stuck inside.
The car lurched forward and then backward, its wheels spinning freely and emitting black smoke, but it just wouldn't come out.
The people on the bus got off: a young couple and two children.
The man ran to the back of the car, bent over and pushed it, his face flushed red and veins bulging.
The woman also ran down and stood beside the car, turning around helplessly and shouting something, which couldn't be heard through the car window.
The two children peered out of the car window, their faces filled with terror.
Unable to push it, the man ran back to the driver's seat, started the car, and slammed on the gas pedal. The wheels spun wildly, kicking up a cloud of dust, but the car remained motionless.
The crack actually widened, and clods of soil kept falling off the edges, making a rustling sound.
The woman was frantic, running around in circles, sometimes behind the car to check the wheels, sometimes in front to check the road, and sometimes looking up at the cars passing by, her eyes pleading.
But all those cars were driving very fast, and not a single one stopped. Some even deliberately went around them, for fear of being implicated.
As she drove past, her eyes met the woman's. In those eyes were fear, despair, and a faint glimmer of hope.
