Chapter 19 Trouble or Reward?
There was a faint smell of mustiness and straw in the carriage, but no one seemed to notice. They were still talking about what they had been doing on the train, first about why Dementors had boarded the train, then about why someone would challenge them, and then about the students in the back carriages confidently claiming they had seen an extremely handsome wizard, and wondering if he was a student or a new teacher at the academy.
The carriage drove toward the two magnificent house gates, flanked by massive stone pillars topped with comically carved winged boars. But what was not comical was that Harry saw two sinister Dementors, each wearing a hood, standing guard at the gate.
Suddenly, another wave of chills and discomfort washed over him. He gripped his wand tightly, and Hermione, who was sitting next to him, quickly held him down. Although the group had miraculously defeated a Dementor on the train, no one wanted to face them alone, right?
Finally, the carriage came to a shaky stop, and the students got off one by one. As Harry jumped off the carriage, Malfoy walked towards him.
"You dare to murder a Dementor! The Ministry of Magic will surely throw you in Azkaban!" Malfoy cursed viciously.
"I heard you were so scared you wet yourself and hid in Fred's carriage?" Ron said sarcastically from the side.
"Ha! Someone who's crouching in a corner crying while holding his sister has the nerve to call himself a member of Gryffindor! (Gryffindor is known for its courage)" Malfoy retorted, while his two lackeys stepped forward. If Ron dared to say another word, he might get beaten up.
"Is there trouble?" a gentle voice asked as Professor Lupin and Bai Lin alighted from another carriage.
Malfoy glared arrogantly at Professor Lupin, taking in the patches on his robes and his tattered trunk. But then he saw Bai Lin's ambiguous smile, and a chill ran down his spine. He had heard his father talk about a young wizard named Kaelin White, a wizard whose magical power and ruthlessness were undeniable. He was the youngest wizard to possess an independent card, and what made him even more troublesome was that he was a member of a mysterious and powerful family.
Malfoy swallowed hard and said, "No, Professor... I was just joking with them..."
Bai Lin ignored the brat and said to Harry, "Let's go, the Sorting Ceremony is about to begin."
The Great Hall doors were open, and Harry followed the crowd toward them. He'd barely glanced at the dark, cloud-shrouded magical ceiling when he heard Associate Professor McGonagall call out, "Kaelin, Lupin! Come to my office!"
Bai Lin and Lu Ping exchanged a glance, shrugged, and followed the old lady to her office.
"I was going to call Harry and Hermione... but you two... have gotten into big trouble!" Professor McGonagall was clearly still considering what language to use to tell them the seriousness of the situation.
Bai Lin waved his hand and said, "Now that the Dementors know they can be killed too, I think it's good news for both Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic! Maybe I can write a paper, and the Ministry of Magic will reward me with a thousand Galleons, and Hogwarts might even promote me to a full professor!"
Professor McGonagall's eyes flickered as she said, "The Ministry of Magic already knows. The reason they haven't caused you any trouble is simply because they're still assessing the impact of your actions..."
Bai Lin pretended to be serious and said, "The title of the paper is 'As long as you master the method, even a third-year student can kill a Dementor.'" Lu Ping, who was originally very serious, couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Professor McGonagall glared at Lupin, and Bai Lin walked up to her, pleading, "Professor McGonagall, we're about to miss the new teacher inauguration ceremony!"
Professor McGonagall choked on her phlegm.
The Great Hall was now a sea of pointed black hats, and every long college table was filled with students. Thousands of candles floating above the tables illuminated their faces. They had indeed missed the Sorting Ceremony, as the diminutive Professor Flitwick was carrying an antique hat and a three-legged stool out of the Great Hall.
Professor McGonagall led Bai Lin and Lu Ping briskly toward the faculty dining table. Many students were so captivated by Bai Lin's handsome face that they forgot to celebrate the new student joining their college.
When Dumbledore saw Bai Lin, his gaze paused. He didn't quite understand Bai Lin, but that wasn't enough for him to consider Bai Lin an enemy. He still believed that Bai Lin was on the side of good, just as he believed in Lupin standing beside him.
Although Dumbledore is old, he is full of energy and is an idol to all the students and faculty of the school. He is also considered by many to be the greatest wizard of our time. He always brings a sense of security to people, including when the students see the Dementors at the door.
"Welcome!" Dumbledore called out, his long beard gleaming in the candlelight. "Welcome back to Hogwarts! I have a few things to tell you, one of which is very important!" He solemnly introduced the Dementors guarding the school gates and repeatedly warned anyone not to give the Dementors any reason to harm them. He emphasized that the Invisibility Cloak was ineffective, as were explanations and pleas for mercy. Moreover, Dementors rarely act alone; if they come in groups, even the most powerful wizard cannot escape unscathed.
Bai Lin yawned.
"Let's change to a more pleasant topic," Dumbledore continued. "I'm delighted to welcome three new teachers to our team this semester."
"First, let's welcome Professor Lupin, the new teacher for Defense Against the Dark Arts!" Lupin immediately stood up and gestured to everyone.
Seeing Lupin's disheveled appearance, the Great Hall erupted in lukewarm, sparse applause. Only Harry, Hermione, and Ron clapped enthusiastically. Lupin's courage, justice, and gentleness on the train had earned them great respect.
There was another person who was extremely unhappy, and that was Snape, who looked as if he had swallowed a hundred flies. Harry and Ron were both amused by his frustrated and even hateful expression.
Snape had always coveted the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, but Lupin beat him to it. When he learned that they had even teamed up to defeat the Dementors on the train (he didn't believe the Dementors would die)—something Snape himself couldn't do—he felt that his wish was unlikely to come true.
"As for our Conservation of Magical Creatures class, I regret to inform you that Professor Byrne retired last semester. However, I am also pleased to announce that his position will be filled by another familiar face, Rupert Hagrid, who has agreed to take on this teaching position in addition to his duties as a gamekeeper. And of course, there is also his assistant professor, Mr. Karin White!"
