Searching for someone in northern Myanmar, and you call that earning tuition fees?
Chapter 157 Don't get excited, I'm a legitimate part-time worker
The rainy season in Tanzania has just ended, and the river water is so murky it looks like boiled mud soup.
The pickup truck swerved and braked sharply, coming to a steady stop on the edge of the cliff.
Ahead, the steel bridge that once spanned the canyon is now just two bare piers, with nothing in between. Below flows the rushing Mara River, where several crocodiles lazily bask in the sun with their mouths open.
Guide Sam huddled under the passenger seat, clutching his head, trembling uncontrollably. "The bridge's broken! We're done for! The back is full of 'Vultures,' and ahead is a cannibal river! We're going to die here! I want to go home, I want to find my mom..."
Su Ming ignored him completely, pushed open the car door, and jumped out.
He walked to the edge of the cliff and glanced around. The bridge had been deliberately demolished; the cuts were very professional, the purpose being to turn the mining area into an isolated island.
"Mr... Mr. Su?" Sam peeked at Su Ming's back through his fingers and saw that he was actually doing stretching exercises. He couldn't help but put his hands together and mutter, "God of Lighters, please bless you, may your flame light your way, and may we not have to feed the crocodiles..."
"Stop reading, it's too noisy." Su Ming walked back to the car and pointed to a dense thicket of bushes on the side. "The navigation just showed that there's a gap in the contour lines here. If the bison herd can cross the river, we can too."
"That's a bison! It has four hooves! We have four wheels!"
Su Ming didn't bother with any more words, got in the car, engaged low-range four-wheel drive, and turned the steering wheel all the way to the lock.
The pickup truck roared and plunged headlong into the bushes. The vehicle bounced violently, nearly flipping over several times, but Su Ming drove with unwavering composure, more steady than when he was driving bumper cars at driving school.
Ten minutes later, the pickup truck circled the broken bridge and appeared on the rocky beach on the other side of the river.
Not far away lies the lithium mining area, enclosed by high walls and barbed wire. The gates are tightly shut, and the silence is eerie.
Su Ming parked the car at the gate and patted Sam, who was still trembling, on the shoulder: "We're here, get out of the car."
He walked up to the rusty iron gate and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Someone come out here, it's a food delivery guy!"
The sound echoed through the empty mining area.
There was no movement.
Half a minute later, a taut, tightly closed sound came from behind the heavy iron door of the warehouse.
"Password!"
Su Ming was stunned for a moment. What era is this? Still playing this game? Gu Changfeng didn't even give a password.
He frowned, thought for a moment, and tentatively called back, "Odd changes, even remains the same?"
After a full five seconds, the voice, trembling with emotion and almost cracking with excitement, roared back: "Brother! The sign indicates the quadrant! We're on the same side! We're really on the same side!"
"Clang—Squeak—"
The heavy iron door of the warehouse was pulled open a crack.
A young man with thick glasses and messy hair peeked out. He was clutching a large pipe wrench tightly in his hand. When he saw Su Ming and the pickup truck covered in mud, tears immediately streamed down his face, leaving two ditch-like streaks.
"Our motherland has sent people to rescue us! Waaaaah..."
The young man threw down the pipe wrench and tried to rush out to hug Su Ming.
Su Ming stepped to the side and nimbly dodged.
"Calm down, this is a legitimate part-time job."
The young man, finding no one there, wasn't embarrassed. He shouted into the warehouse, "Dr. Chen! Old Wang! Come out quickly! The code word matched! It's one of us!"
Splash!
The warehouse door swung open, and more than a dozen people poured out. Leading them was an elderly man with gray hair, wearing work clothes stained with oil; he was none other than Dr. Chen, a leading figure in China's rare earth industry.
Dr. Chen walked quickly to Su Ming, looked the young man up and down in his T-shirt and canvas bag, and seemed a little dazed.
"Comrade, which unit are you from? We've sent out a distress signal. Where is the main force?"
"My name is Su Ming, a freshman at Jiangnan University. I'm doing this part-time job at the request of Gu Changfeng," Su Ming said succinctly.
Dr. Chen nearly choked on his breath, adjusting his glasses; clearly, his brain's CPU couldn't process the information.
"Part-time...part-time?"
The young man with the messy hair next to him, Wang Dachui, suddenly slapped his thigh: "I get it! It must be the confidentiality agreement!"
Wang Dachui lowered his voice and said to the engineers around him, "He's definitely a super agent sent by the government! Disguised as a student! Look at his demeanor, his composure—that's what you call a master of disguise!"
The engineers' gazes towards Su Ming instantly changed, filled with admiration, hope, and a sense of sudden realization that "the movies are all true."
Dr. Chen was still hesitant: "Just...just you alone?"
"One," Su Ming confirmed, glancing at the pickup truck. "Oh right, there's also a guide, but he's basically just a cheerleader. The evacuation plan is still being developed, don't rush it."
"How can we not be anxious!" Wang Dachui suddenly shouted, "Little Liu is dying! Since we're here, Comrade Special Envoy, do you have a first-aid kit? Are you a special forces medic?"
As the crowd parted, Su Ming finally saw a young man lying on a cot in the corner of the warehouse. His thigh was covered in blood and gore, and the blood had soaked through the makeshift bandages.
"The artery wasn't severed, but the vein ruptured, resulting in excessive blood loss," Su Ming made the judgment after only a glance.
"We're out of bandages! And we're out of hemostatic medicine too!" Wang Dachui stamped his feet in frustration.
Su Ming took off the canvas bag from his back and unzipped it.
Under the expectant gazes of Dr. Chen, Wang Dachui, and more than a dozen engineers, Su Ming solemnly pulled out two items.
A pack of pink-packaged "Whisper" overnight extra-long sanitary napkins.
Two brand new boxes of Durex ultra-thin condoms.
Dr. Chen adjusted his glasses, which had slipped down to the tip of his nose, as if trying to see more clearly and confirm whether his eyesight was failing due to old age.
Wang Dachui's mouth dropped open, his chin almost hitting his feet; he was completely dumbfounded.
"You..." Wang Dachui's fingers trembled as he pointed at what Su Ming was holding. "What do you want to do? Little Liu is almost dead, and you...you still want to take advantage of this?"
Su Ming gave him a look as if he were an idiot.
"Shut up if you don't want him to die, and come lend a hand."
Su Ming skillfully tore open the sanitary napkin packaging. He pressed the thick cotton pad directly onto Xiao Liu's thigh wound, pressing it down firmly.
"Super absorbent polymer, sterile cotton, high blood absorption, and hemostasis effect is three times better than ordinary bandages," Su Ming explained while operating the bandage, his tone as indifferent as if he were lecturing.
Then, he untied the condom, stretched it out, and tightly wrapped it twice around the proximal end above the wound, tying a knot.
"Highly elastic latex with excellent toughness, the best temporary tourniquet."
After finishing all this, Su Ming clapped his hands: "Alright, raise your leg. Loosen the tourniquet every half hour."
Everyone stared in disbelief at the extremely incongruous "hemostasis combination" on Xiao Liu's leg.
The bleeding has fucking stopped.
This is... insane! But it's also fucking scientifically sound!
"I...we..." Xiao Liu, lying on the bed, weakly opened his eyes and looked at Su Ming. A bold idea popped into his mind.
He lowered his voice and asked with all his might, "Brother... are you from the 'Dragon Fang' Special Operations Brigade?"
Su Ming wiped the blood off his hands and answered without looking up.
"no."
"Is that the 'Snow Wolf' commando team?" Xiao Liu's eyes lit up.
"No, not exactly."
"Could it be..." Xiao Liu's voice trembled with excitement, "...the legendary shadow unit, the one that's never publicly acknowledged and reports directly to the highest levels, codenamed 'Ghost'?!"
A hush fell over the warehouse. Yes! That must be it! That's the only reasonable explanation!
This is the legendary king of soldiers!
Su Ming stopped what he was doing and looked at them intently.
"Neither."
He pointed to the T-shirt he was wearing that had the "Jiangnan University" logo printed on it.
"Jiangnan University, freshman. I'm here part-time."
The excitement on Xiao Liu's face faded, leaving only bewilderment.
Old Wang slammed the pipe wrench in his hand onto his foot with a loud bang, wincing in pain but unable to utter a sound.
Dr. Chen adjusted his glasses, his eyes behind the lenses filled with doubt about the world.
part time?
Single-handedly breaking through the blockade to evacuate citizens from the African theater... is this a part-time job?
Have college students these days gotten this involved?
