Chapter 18 An Extraordinary Dragon's Den and Tiger's Lair
"We have important business to attend to today. You can experience it for yourself another day," Papaya whispered in Guan Jie's ear. "You'll only know how to handle the later levels after you've completed them yourself."
"A den of dragons and tigers?" Guan Jie joked.
"Even more dangerous than that, hahaha."
Although Mugua didn't lead any of the girls away, his eyes didn't miss a single one. By the time he finished climbing the steps, he was covered in sweat. Guan Jie knew that Mugua must have exerted a lot of effort to control himself.
"What a wonderful place!" Papaya exclaimed greedily.
Looking down from the second floor, the two rows of girls standing by the stair railing were all exquisite and beautiful, so beautiful that one could forget the ordinary-looking, plain-faced women seen during the day. It was as if beauty belonged only to the night.
This is a living hell that leads to utter depravity! It's human nature, so it's bound to exist.
The two staircases faced two different corridors. At the entrance of each corridor, a young man in a suit and tie was waiting. After hearing Papaya say "three eights," one of them immediately led the way.
Although Papaya knew the way, the tall, slender man in a suit still enthusiastically led the way.
The corridor is lined with private rooms with doors that open at an angle, each door forming a 60-degree angle with the corridor. In front of each door is a partition wall covered with mosaic artwork. So even if the door is open, you can't see who the guests are or what they're doing inside.
Soft music played in the corridor, and occasionally, the doors of the private rooms would open and tilt outwards, letting out bursts of singing mixed with laughter. The noise would then abruptly stop as the doors closed.
"The sound insulation is really good," Guan Jie said.
"The Butterfly Club's renovation cost a lot of money." Papaya pouted upwards, as if she were jealous.
Turn right at the end of the corridor, walk down the stairs for a while, and the guy who was leading the way will stop and say to Papaya, "Room 888 is just ahead."
Papaya nodded, and the young man who had led the way turned and left almost silently, without even stirring the air.
Turn right again and you'll find a private room. The gold number '888' on the door is strikingly visible under the dim lighting. A burly man stands in the doorway, shaking his head impatiently. He seems to have been standing there for decades, his neck stiff, as if he'll stop moving if he doesn't shake it soon.
The appearance of Papaya and Guan Jie did not stop the muscular man from moving his neck. A fierce tiger tattoo with a roaring mouth was imposingly displayed on the muscular man's arm.
In the corner next to the private room were two sofas with a glass-topped coffee table in between. The sofas were a certain shade of red, somewhat like the bright red lips of a middle-aged woman on the street who was putting on makeup for the first time, a striking scarlet.
Papaya said to Guan Jie, "You wait here. When Brother Xu is free, I'll tell him about you, and then I'll call you in."
Guan Jie nodded, then walked to the sofa, took out a cigarette, lit it with the lighter next to the ashtray, said a few words to Mu Gua and the sweaty man at the door, and then went into the private room.
A woman was singing in the private room; her voice was beautiful. However, as the door closed, the beautiful sound was abruptly cut off. Guan Jie took a drag of his cigarette, exhaling the smoke through his nostrils. The smoke gradually thinned, swirling upwards before disappearing before reaching the ceiling.
When the cigarette was almost burned down to the filter, Guan Jie took it from his mouth and shoved it into the ashtray until it was completely extinguished.
Five minutes later, Guan Jie stood up and walked to the door of the private room.
The muscular man turned his head and stretched out his left hand to block Guan Jie's path.
Guan Jie is 1.83 meters tall and has a strong physique, but he looks small next to this hunk.
Guan Jie made a judgment about the muscular man at first glance. He was at least 1.9 meters tall and weighed no less than 300 kilograms. Because he was covered in muscles, he might weigh more than he appeared.
"Want a cigarette?" Guan Jie took out a cigarette case and shook out a cigarette.
The muscular man didn't take it. He crossed his arms, lowered his eyelids, and said in an extremely impatient tone, "The big shots inside are talking about something. You can't go in without orders." The muscular man pointed to the seat Guan Jie had just been sitting in and said, "Go back and sit down."
Guan Jie stuffed the cigarette that had been shaken out halfway back into the cigarette case, but instead of returning to his seat, he took two steps back the way he came.
The muscular man stretched out his right hand to block Guan Jie, his palm curving inward.
"I said, go back to your seat."
Guan Jie raised his hands, palms facing outwards, and held them flat in front of his chest. "I just wanted to take a stroll for a bit, I'll come back later."
"I told you to go back, don't you understand, you idiot?"
The muscular man removed his body from the wall and approached Guan Jie. His large right hand shrank, transforming into a massive iron sledgehammer used for paving roads, and he held it horizontally in front of Guan Jie.
"OK." Guan Jie stepped back. He didn't want to fight this big guy; at least, it wasn't the right time yet.
However, Guan Jie didn't return to his seat. Instead, he leaned against the door of the private room, just like the burly man, albeit on the other side. The burly man glanced at Guan Jie, seemingly displeased that Guan Jie hadn't listened to him and returned to his seat.
"I'm here to see Brother Xu. I'm new here and want to find a job under him to make a living," Guan Jie said, tugging at the corners of his mouth to make himself look friendly.
"Xu Xiaodao, humph." The big guy snorted coldly, then turned his head away and stopped looking at Guan Jie.
The big guy started moving his arms and legs, just like a child with ADHD, never able to sit still for a moment.
Clearly, this big guy wasn't one of Xu Haiyang's men.
Xu Haiyang is the "Brother Xu" that Papaya mentioned, and also the "Little Knife Xu" that Big Guy just mentioned.
Xu Xiaodao's nickname wasn't unfounded; Guan Jie knew its origin. A few years ago, one of Xu Haiyang's subordinates couldn't stand him anymore and secretly eloped with one of his drivers. However, before they even left Huangyan City, the driver was involved in a car accident on the road.
The driver's legs were crushed on the spot, almost turning into a meat patty. Although he survived after being taken to the hospital, the doctors had to perform an amputation.
The driver who hit the young man readily paid compensation. Considering he hadn't been drinking and his sincere attitude, the young man accepted the compensation and went back to his hometown with his family.
The girl who eloped with the driver didn't get into a car accident, but within half a day, she took the initiative to return to Xu Haiyang and beg for forgiveness.
Xu Haiyang, showing compassion, didn't have anyone break the girl's legs (Xu Haiyang once said that those who betrayed him would end up with crippled legs). He peeled an apple, slowly ate it, and then used the fruit knife to draw a blood-red version of a Chinese landscape painting on the girl's face.
And so, Xu Xiaodao's name began to circulate in Desolate Rock City. Of course, no one dared to call him that to his face.
Since the burly, muscular man isn't one of Xu Haiyang's men, he can only be from the Butterfly Club.
Tonight, Xu Haiyang came to the Butterfly Club from the desolate rock island to talk to the club's owner about something. So, besides Xu Haiyang, the only other person there was Chen Kaipiao, the owner of the Butterfly Club.
Like Xu Xiaodao, Chen Kaipiao was a nickname given to him by people in the underworld because he was ruthless and cruel when he was in the business. He never lost a fight and always managed to crack open his opponent's skull.
The big guy continued to sway his body, and the door in front of Guan Jie shook for a moment but then returned to stillness, as if someone was about to push the door open but changed their mind the instant their hand touched it.
Guan Jie pressed his ear to the crack in the door, but he couldn't hear anything.
"No rush, someone will call you in when needed," the big man said with a sneer, without turning his head.
