Who moved her body?
Chapter 19 The Feast at Hongmen
Guan Jie walked back to his seat and lit another cigarette for himself.
Through the rising smoke, the big man's face slowly distorted, his cheeks bulging, like a monster from a movie.
As the cigarette burned to the middle, the door to the private room opened outwards, and along with Papaya's head, another woman's singing voice emerged, sweet like a lovely little nightingale singing.
Papaya didn't come out; she just waved and winked at Guan Jie.
Guan Jie stubbed out his cigarette and walked into the private room with Mu Gua. The nearly 20-centimeter-thick soft-padded door closed automatically behind Guan Jie, and Guan Jie's feet sank into the carpet for a full half foot.
The private room was huge, with a curved sofa that stretched for at least twenty meters, fitting against the curved wall. A screen, as long as the wall itself, was embedded in the wall between two enormous coffee tables, reaching from floor to ceiling. The singing Guan Jie had just heard had stopped, and the screen was now playing a story about a handsome young man who had grown up and become even more dashing. A short-haired girl was holding a microphone, anxiously waiting for the line, "I'm still the same boy I always was..."
Two men sat on the sofa, which was about 20 meters long, their arms around each other and very close. Without asking, Guan Jie knew that one of them was Xu Haiyang and the other was Chen Kaipiao, the owner of the Butterfly Club.
Two men sat upright at either end of the sofa, both with fierce-looking faces. Judging from their positions, they were probably Xu Haiyang and Chen Kaipiao's men. Closer to the two men were four girls. Apart from the short-haired girl who was singing, the other three were clinking beer bottles together. Their toasting ceremony had just ended when Guan Jie walked in, and they were now tilting their heads back and chugging beer.
Mugua bent down next to a fair-skinned, thin man, said something to him, and then pointed at Guan Jie. This man was sitting on the side furthest from the door.
This fair-skinned, slender man was Xu Haiyang, but his appearance was different from what Guan Jie had expected. Although thin, he was not weak; fair-skinned, he did not look sickly.
Chen Kaipiao surprised Guan Jie. He didn't have a fierce expression; his handsome face even had a touch of scholarly elegance. Guan Jie found it hard to associate him with someone who had a split head. Instead, he was more inclined to believe that Chen was a well-educated associate professor who would be promoted to professor in five years.
Xu Haiyang looked up at Guan Jie with the same gaze an old farmer would give when selecting livestock, trying to tell from its size whether it was a capable animal. Mu Gua quickly moved aside and sat at the far end of the sofa, next to two other men who looked like thugs.
Chen Kaipiao released his arm from Xu Haiyang's shoulder, smiled slightly, and raised the champagne in his hand to Guan Jie.
Xu Haiyang finally smiled with satisfaction, his lips crinkling into wrinkles.
"Looks pretty good, but those muscles you get from the gym are just for show, they're not presentable." Xu Haiyang raised his arm and waved towards the papaya at the far end of the sofa. "You should be able to run errands for me."
Guan Jie took off his hat and nodded to Xu Haiyang and Chen Kaipiao, then walked over to Mugua and sat down next to her.
Papaya gave Guan Jie a look that said, "I knew you could do it," and Guan Jie twitched the corners of his mouth to express his gratitude.
Guan Jie looked around. The entire room was furnished with soft furnishings, including the door he had just entered through, which was now integrated with the walls, as if the room had never had a door at all. Even the ceiling was made of some kind of soundproofing material, not natural plaster.
This is why no sound can be heard from outside. Guan Jie thought.
Chen Kaipiao filled Xu Haiyang's glass to the brim. Xu Haiyang held out his glass and said, "We're supposed to be having serious business tonight, but this little thing has interrupted our conversation. I'll drink to that first."
Chen Kaipiao watched with a faint smile as Xu Haiyang finished his champagne, then tilted his head back and drank his own champagne.
"Making people wait outside is not my way of hospitality. Since you're here, please come in and have a seat." Chen Kaipiao lowered his head and twirled the wine glass in his hand, playing with it for a while like a little boy who had just received his favorite toy, before putting it down and saying, "The matters between us brothers are nothing, there's no need to discuss them. I won't let President Xu come for nothing; this private room will soon witness my answer!"
Xu Haiyang put down his cup, leaned to face Chen Kaipiao, raised his chin slightly to show a victorious attitude, and said, "I knew Boss Chen was a smart man. It's just a woman's business. I'll give you two back next time, hahaha."
"There won't be a next time." Chen Kaipiao revealed a charming smile.
"What do you mean?" Xu Haiyang asked, his smile unchanged as the winner of the negotiation, as he picked up a cashew nut and popped it into his mouth.
"Let's settle this here tonight. There's no need for a next time."
Chen Kaipiao picked up a bottle of bright orange champagne from the coffee table where the drinks were placed and filled Xu Haiyang's glass.
Xu Haiyang picked up his cup and laughed heartily, as if suddenly realizing something.
"Yes, you're right."
Just as Xu Haiyang tilted his head back and poured the last drop of champagne into his mouth, Chen Kaipiao's hand, which was holding the champagne bottle, quietly slid to the neck of the bottle. Before the large wine glass covering half of Xu Haiyang's face could be removed from his face, there was a muffled sound, followed by the crisp sound of glass shards falling into the wine glass.
The bottle broke off at the neck, and the broken part of the bottle in Chen Kaipiao's hand was right in front of Xu Haiyang's nose. Xu Haiyang stared dumbfounded at the broken glass, and only when a warm red liquid flowed down from the top of his head did he realize that he had been split open.
The quickest to react was the short-haired girl sitting next to Xu Haiyang who was singing "Youth." She let go of the microphone, screamed, and ran away.
The other two or three girls who were busy blowing bottles immediately followed, making room for the thugs who were rushing towards the middle from both ends of the sofa.
Xu Haiyang's thugs were unarmed and were instantly overpowered by Chen Kaipiao's two henchmen. Xu Haiyang probably didn't expect that Chen Kaipiao had hidden iron bars in the private room.
Xu Haiyang's two henchmen lay groaning in the corner, clutching their stomachs. Judging from their pale faces, they wouldn't be able to get up anytime soon.
Mugua, trembling, clung to Guan Jie, "What do we do?"
Guan Jie pressed down on Mu Gua's hand and said, "Wait."
Xu Haiyang had taken off his shirt and covered his head with it at some point, making his already pale face even paler, even paler than his white upper body.
"You, you." Xu Haiyang trembled as he pointed a finger at Chen Kaipiao, who had a mysterious smile on his face, and said, "You think you can just get away with hitting me? Let me tell you, everyone in Huangyan City listens to my cousin. Just you wait."
Chen Kaipiao picked up another bottle of champagne, poured himself some, took a slow sip, and said, "What your cousin knows is that you died in an abandoned factory, with the needle you were injected with tonight nearby. The cause of death was that a scavenger, seeing your wealth, attacked you with a bottle and stones, and you bled to death."
"Of course, syringes are too sensitive, your cousin would have someone cover it up," Chen Kaipiao shrugged and continued, "So your death was an accident, and since it was an accident, why would your cousin have thought of revenge?"
Xu Haiyang then realized that Chen Kaipiao didn't just want to teach him a lesson, but to kill him.
One of Chen Kaipiao's henchmen asked him, "Boss, should we deal with those two too?" He pointed to Mugua and Guan Jie.
Xu Haiyang's face was ashen. How could he have imagined that after roaming the desolate rock city for over thirty years, he would die such a tragic death? Whether from excessive blood loss or from losing all hope, Xu Haiyang closed his eyes and slumped into the sofa, his shirt already stained dark red.
Seeing that Xu Haiyang was listless, Mugua knew that he wouldn't survive either.
"I'm sorry, brother, I never thought I'd lead you to your death." Papaya sighed, pursing his lips.
Guan Jie pulled a cushion from behind his back and stuffed it into Mu Gua's hand, saying, "Take care of yourself. I don't want to die tonight."
Papaya grabbed the pillow without understanding why, like a drowning person grabbing a straw, knowing it was useless but still holding on tightly.
Guan Jie stood up, and the thugs closest to him asked Chen Kaipiao for instructions. Chen Kaipiao did not give any orders, so the thugs could only watch as Guan Jie stood up and inserted the hidden latch behind the door.
"Kid, if you surrender to me now, I might spare your life." Chen Kaipiao squinted, as if this was a friendly reminder.
