Chapter 17, Step 1: Finding a Job
Mugua put down the bookshelf in her hand, looked up at Guan Jie with a puzzled expression.
Guan Jie adjusted the brim of his baseball cap.
"I offended a local bigwig in the mainland and can't go back for a while. I have to find a way to make a living. You see, besides having some muscles, I don't have any special skills."
Papaya looked Guan Jie up and down, then suddenly swung an iron rod from the wall at Guan Jie's head.
If it were anyone else, that iron rod would have either left them half-dead or given them a concussion.
But the person standing in front of the papaya was none other than himself.
Guan Jie neither dodged nor attacked; he simply raised his left hand and grabbed it forcefully. Before Mu Gua could even see how Guan Jie did it, the iron rod spun around in Guan Jie's hand, and Mu Gua's elbow rotated 180 degrees counterclockwise. Now it was Mu Gua's turn to cry out in pain and quickly let go.
"Not bad, kid. You're pretty quick." Papaya rubbed his sore elbows and nodded in satisfaction. "Come with me to the nightclub tonight. Whether I want you or not is up to you. I can only give you an introduction."
Guan Jie knew that Mu Gua's superiors had asked him to help get a few people, but he didn't expect Mu Gua to agree so readily.
It was a good start, and Guan Jie finally showed a genuine smile.
……
At 11 p.m., the nightlife at Butterfly Club is just beginning, and there are still parking spaces available.
"Later, the car will have to be parked along the road." Papaya squeezed his Golf between two Mercedes-Benzes. This spot was near the clubhouse entrance; although it wasn't a parking space, no one would call to move your car. Of course, it wasn't that people didn't want to park there, but there simply wasn't enough space.
A two-meter width is more than enough for most vehicles, but it's simply not enough for those guys who always drive big Toyota pickup trucks.
Looking at the cars in the parking lot, each one more expensive and larger than the last, Guan Jie felt as if he had entered a place for flaunting wealth rather than a place for entertainment.
"Why drive such a big car just to have a drink?" Guan Jie patted the Mercedes next door, and felt that the Mercedes had become a petite girl next door.
"You just don't understand." Papaya pressed the button on the key to lock the car door, then tapped Guan Jie's chest with her index finger and said, "Drinking is just foreplay; the main event is what happens after you've finished drinking."
"After drinking?"
"Let's see who can pick up more girls, haha." Papaya gave him a knowing look, then turned and walked towards the clubhouse entrance.
The portico, extending more than ten meters outwards, is flanked by three marble-clad columns. Between each pair of columns stands an exotic plaster sculpture—a woman half-hidden, half-revealed, a common sight in so-called art venues. At the end of the portico is a heavy bronze door, gleaming like gold.
Two handsome doormen, dressed in dark suits and white shirts with white gloves, stood on either side of the door. When a guest entered, the two doormen closest to the door would step forward, open the door, and then bow gracefully. The guest would feel as if they were God.
Papaya stepped forward. The two doormen on the outside only glanced at Papaya and Guan Jie out of the corner of their eyes before almost simultaneously stepping forward, crossing their hands. One of the doormen said without moving his lips, "No reservations, please!"
The other two doormen remained motionless, as if they didn't care what was happening at all.
Papaya tilted his head back and scoffed.
"Are you new here?" Papaya spat on the gleaming vintage floor tiles, then spread two long, slender, fair hands apart in front of him. "Do you know Brother Xu? Your manager usually gives me some face. What? You two greenhorns are acting like bullies now?"
A door that looked like it weighed hundreds of thousands of pounds suddenly opened from the inside, and a tall, slender woman with heavy makeup came out. Before Guan Jie could see what she looked like, he heard a delicate, high-pitched voice.
"Oh my, isn't this Brother Papaya?" The woman's high heels thumped on the floor tiles. She raised her right hand and waved it downwards. Guan Jie felt that there was an invisible handkerchief waving in her hand.
The doorman returned to his original position, and the woman who came in put her left hand on her waist and pushed her hips to the left, as if her waist could no longer support her hand.
"Watch your eyes, this is Brother Xu's underling, you should call him Brother Papaya." The woman raised her right hand and pointed her slender index finger at the two doormen on either side.
Papaya grinned, revealing a set of white teeth, and walked towards the woman, saying, "Sister Yao, you've gotten even more radiant these past few days!"
The woman, whom Papaya called Sister Yao, lowered her left hand, feigned anger, and said coquettishly, "You're so glib! You'll turn into a dried-up papaya sooner or later!"
"Hehe, I'd even be willing to dry out." Papaya leaned closer and grinned.
Sister Yao reached out and pushed Mugua away, gently patting Mugua's shoulder and saying, "Brother Xu has already arrived, and you're still taking advantage of me here. I don't think Brother Xu has that much patience."
Papaya raised her chin, gave Sister Yao a flirtatious wink, and then gestured for Guan Jie to follow her inside.
Sister Yao smiled charmingly as she watched Mugua walk away. When Guan Jie approached, she stopped smiling and looked him over. Guan Jie lowered his baseball cap with his left hand and nodded to Sister Yao.
The two doormen near the door immediately pushed the door open, then bent down, all in one smooth motion.
The door was closed again behind Guan Jie.
Upon entering, you'll find a three-story hall with a floor-standing crystal chandelier that spirals from the ceiling to the floor. The mirror-like floor reflects the chandelier's image, resembling a sky full of stars.
The sweet but not cloying aroma seemed to blend seamlessly into the house, bringing joy wherever you went. Along both sides of the hall, a row of high-backed sofas lined the walls, their backs a full 1.5 meters high, so that anyone sitting inside would be completely enveloped. The sofas faced each other in pairs, with a small round table in the center, upon which sat a large black and white crystal ashtray.
The wall behind the crystal chandelier resembles an ancient screen wall, separating the hall from the space behind. The wall is adorned with suggestive artworks; the fair skin and strong physiques ignite the passion of everyone who enters.
Seeing Guan Jie looking at the paintings, Mu Gua squinted and grinned as she explained, "This is called a warm-up. Don't underestimate these paintings. The first thing people see when they come in is these, and then they're guaranteed to end up spending the whole package."
Guan Jie smirked and nodded, jokingly remarking with admiration, "Looks like even club owners are starting to use psychology now."
"It's a mixed bag. Forget psychology, even the incense used here was custom-made by a renowned research institution." Papaya scratched his temple, seemingly racking his brains before finally remembering, and said, "It's said that this incense can accelerate blood circulation, but it's not a potent drug; it works slowly."
"I've really learned something new," Guan Jie said.
Behind the five-meter-long counter in front of the wall stood two girls wearing halter-neck cheongsams, who smiled from afar and asked Papaya which private room she was in.
"Three eights." After saying that, Mu Gua skillfully walked around the wall, and two curved staircases that ascended gracefully appeared in front of Guan Jie.
Both staircases lead to the second floor, one on the left and one on the right.
"This way." Papaya went up the stairs on the right.
Every two steps on the stairs stood a girl in a halter-neck, modified cheongsam. The cheongsam was very long, reaching all the way to the bottom of her high heels, but the slits were very high, almost from the waist, causing each of them to stick out one leg. They each carried a small handbag, barely big enough to fit a cell phone. As Mugua and Guan Jie passed by, they gave them smiles like flight attendants.
"This is the second challenge, gentle as water," said Papaya.
"I'm particular," Guan Jie replied.
