The Australian Revolution of 1828
Chapter 4: The Grand Commander
The title of Grand Commander existed briefly in the early Ming Dynasty. It was a position that managed military and political affairs, but it did not have any legitimacy in the legal sense regarding the civil affairs of Hanyang Prefecture.
Now, Old Master Han has unearthed it from the history books and returned it to the jurisdiction of civil and military affairs. His ultimate goal is to enable Han Qingyun to inherit the position of Governor of Hanyang.
If it were a kingdom, there would be no need for such trouble. Han Qingyun is the undisputed heir, and there is no need for debate.
Early in the morning, Han Qingyun arrived at the Governor's Office to prepare to accept his new position. Although the father and son had discussed the details the night before, the necessary procedures still had to be followed.
All the heads of the various government offices in the prefectural government had arrived, chattering and making quite a commotion.
Han Qingyun coughed deliberately to interrupt the noise, and then sat down in the seat of the Director of the Immigration and Trade Administration.
The bureau chiefs thought it was Old Master Han who had arrived, but when they realized it was Han Qingyun, they instantly reverted to their previous behavior, boasting endlessly about trivial matters at home.
It seems the deterrent effect is insufficient, failing to achieve the desired effect of silencing the enemy.
Han Qingyun knew how to be patient. Knowing that he was young and had limited influence, he did not step forward to make a fool of himself. Instead, he took advantage of the conversation to chat about trivial family matters, just like a gossipy woman, and said, "Uncles and elders, I have heard that you are all still vigorous in your old age. Your wives have only been married for two or three years, and you have had children one after another."
At this point, the directors became very excited and kept praising their own abilities.
Among them, Feng Guorang, the nearly fifty-year-old director of the Engineering Bureau, was still vigorous despite his age. He said, "Qingyun, I have to thank you for this. I thought the Feng family line was about to end. Who would have thought that after coming to Hanyang Prefecture, we not only got land, but also married two wives and concubines, and had two sons in three years."
"Even if I die in the future, I can at least give an account to my ancestors."
They had all fought alongside Grandpa Han, so Han Qingyun still showed them respect, saying, "Uncle Feng, the best is yet to come. With your health, who knows how many more wives you might be able to marry!"
His words caused everyone present to burst into laughter, and they all teased Feng Guorang.
Feng Guorang was a rough and uncultured man who hadn't learned many characters since arriving in Hanyang Prefecture; he could basically only write his own name. Hearing the teasing from the crowd, he was pleased and said, "Absolutely! I'm only fifty years old. Following Governor Han in conquering the world, I'm sure I'll live a much better life."
"If Qingyun can make further progress, I believe Hanyang Prefecture will develop even faster."
That's right, the Director of the Engineering Department, Feng Guorang, is a close confidant of Old Master Han and is here to promote Han Qingyun.
The directors must have known about the relapse of Old Master Han's old illness, and they also understood the hidden meaning in Feng Guorang's words. For a moment, no one spoke.
Meng Xiong, the director of the Mining and Industry Bureau, had already married into the Han family, so naturally he had no reason not to support it. He chimed in, "Of course, the foundation of Hanyang was gradually built up under Qingyun's leadership."
"We can't ignore Qingyun's role just because he's young. Besides, everyone here is a roughneck; I don't believe they can do better than Qingyun!"
There are a total of eight directors in Hanyang Prefecture. Han Qingyun is one of them, and two others have already sided with him. The other directors, knowing they don't have the power to command such a large following, quickly changed their tune and echoed his sentiments.
While everyone was expressing their opinions, Han Qingyun was also observing carefully the attitudes of each director. Among them, Director Dai Zhicheng of the Civil Affairs Department was reluctant and his support was very hesitant.
Of course, this is also related to his lack of education; he is not good at restraint and instead reveals unwarranted ambition. Although Dai Zhicheng is also a confidant of Old Master Han, he has become too involved in many things and has begun to harbor thoughts of replacing him.
Han Qingyun did not point it out, but simply noted it down, intending to deal with it later after he officially inherited the position of governor.
To be honest, Han Qingyun is quite petty and can't tolerate such a two-faced person!
Everyone spoke freely, expressing their support for Han Qingyun's progress. Old Master Han, also adept at choosing his time, arrived at the government office from the back hall after everyone had agreed.
Feng Guorang nodded imperceptibly, indicating that the matter was settled.
With clear news, Old Master Han acted as if nothing had happened and brought up the matter that had been discussed the night before, saying, "My recurring attacks during this period have seriously affected the progress of various tasks in Hanyang Prefecture."
"I intend to select a young Grand Commander to temporarily oversee the military, political, and civil affairs of Hanyang Prefecture, and to expedite the implementation of the matters that have been delayed recently."
"What are your thoughts, brothers?"
In terms of youth, who can compare to Han Qingyun? This kind of advantage is incomparable.
Feng Guorang, just as before, was the first to stand up in support, saying, "Chief Censor, we're all roughnecks; even the characters we know were taught to read by Qingyun!"
"Before, when we were making a living at sea with you, we were always fighting and killing, and there was no stability at all. Since Qingyun brought us to Hanyang, everyone's life has improved dramatically."
"We eat meat that even the landlords in the Qing Dynasty couldn't get, we eat it once a day, we eat as much as we want! If anyone can lead Hanyang to continue to develop, I believe it will be Qingyun."
"Of all those present, besides Qingyun, none are capable of shouldering this responsibility!"
"General Secretary" is another term for the Governor-General in the Far East, which is not unusual and everyone can understand it.
As soon as Feng Guorang finished speaking, his father-in-law Meng Xiong also stepped forward and echoed, "Chief Censor, I support Guorang's proposal. Qingyun is definitely the best choice."
"Since Qingyun took office at the Immigration and Trade Bureau, he not only exported cattle and horses from Hanyang Prefecture to the Far East, but also solved the problem of more men than women in Hanyang Prefecture, completely reversed the marriage problem, and stabilized the stability of Hanyang Prefecture."
"It can be said that Qingyun's many achievements have made Hanyang Prefecture what it is today."
After the two directors explained their positions, the other directors couldn't sit still any longer. Since the position of Governor-General of Hanyang Prefecture wouldn't fall into their hands anyway, they could only gain some "meritorious service" by following the emperor's lead, so they all echoed their sentiments.
As for the Director of Home Affairs, he also knows that some things are not just a matter of strength, but also a matter of the general trend.
Seeing that everyone unanimously recommended Han Qingyun, Dai Zhicheng, the Director of the Civil Affairs Department, could only chime in, saying, "Chief Justice, Qingyun is indeed the only suitable candidate."
"Qingyun's achievements over the years are evident to all. Without Qingyun, there would be no Hanyang today. Now that Qingyun has been appointed as the Grand Commander, it can be said that he is the one who deserves everyone's support."
He then glanced at the crowd and took the lead in "persuading" Old Master Han, saying, "Chief Censor, we can't hesitate any longer; it's best to make a decision sooner rather than later!"
The position of governor did not have a tradition of being passed down from father to son, and Old Master Han's concerns were not unfounded. Fortunately, the outcome was good, and nothing uncontrollable happened.
With everyone's support, Old Master Han then formally announced the new appointment, saying, "Since all the brothers have suggested that Qingyun be appointed as Grand Commander, then let's do as the brothers say!"
"The Grand Marshal's golden seal shall be cast by the Civil Affairs Department; this must be accomplished today!"
