Chapter 197 War Begins
When Andrea arrived, Carol was organizing her gear, checking it one by one in the bedroom.
Upon hearing the noise from the first floor, she quickly grabbed her pistol and went outside.
As soon as she stepped outside, she heard Andrea's voice: "Carol, I have good news."
"Come in quickly." Carol didn't scold Andrea for her impetuousness and led her into the room.
The room was filled with a dense array of weapons, which reflected a cold, gleaming light in the candlelight.
Andrea glanced at the weapons, which were well-maintained, with a thin, even layer of gun oil on their moving parts and metal surfaces.
He randomly picked up an automatic rifle, inspected the barrel and other parts, and then fired a blank shot.
Hearing the crisp click, Andrea laughed and said, "You're so thoughtful, Carol. I might as well take care of all your gun maintenance."
Carol ignored Andrea's teasing and simply asked, "You're quite conspicuous coming here now."
"No, I came very discreetly, no one will find out," Andrea said confidently.
"I've learned the governor's specific attack plan from Milton. Where is Daryl now? We need him to help us get the message out."
The night was enchanting; the thin morning mist had not yet dissipated, and the sky was tinged with a lazy blue.
The towering watchtower appeared to be empty, as no guards had yet arrived for their posts.
Two watchtowers stood quietly guarding the main gate, inside the barbed wire fence. Suddenly, two perfect parabolas streaked across the sky, and two small cylindrical shells fell onto the balcony of the watchtowers.
Thud—
Thud—
Two explosions rang out in quick succession, instantly blowing off the roof of the watchtower. The windows and the upper part of the watchtower were suddenly destroyed, disappearing into the flames and falling into the dark ruins.
A few seconds later, the prison alarm sounded at the right time, and a commotion came from the main part of the prison.
Caesar had been up for a long time, or rather, he hadn't slept all night.
He glanced to the side and saw several neatly dressed soldiers marching forward, their feet stomping heavily on the ground, occasionally muttering—
He shouted for help, saying things like "The enemy is coming!" and acted with remarkable sincerity.
Caesar looked up and gazed once more at the prison's main gate.
Dust and debris filled the air, almost completely obscuring the main entrance of the prison, making it difficult to see clearly.
Amidst the dust and smoke, two menacingly modified vans, each topped with barbed wire, hurtled forward.
That was clearly the barbed wire gate of the prison.
This barbed wire is really useless; it can't stop zombies, and it can't stop trucks.
Caesar's eye twitched; he truly couldn't understand why American prisons liked to install such impractical and unattractive things.
Before Caesar could think any further, the two trucks drove a short distance in front of the prison lawn before coming to a stop after their tires locked up and they braked, leaving several unsightly marks.
The driver's side doors of the two cars opened, and a burly man wearing a bomb suit, bulletproof vest, and helmet jumped out of each.
The burly man lowered his head and fiddled with the driver's seat for a bit. Once the car started moving slowly forward, he hunched over and walked back close to the car body as if afraid of being shot.
This pose amused Caesar, who picked up the walkie-talkie and said, "Sniper, kill one, cripple the other."
""
There was no response on the walkie-talkie, but Caesar knew that the person on the other end had heard him.
Caesar placed the walkie-talkie down and watched with great interest.
On the lawn, one of the men walked to the taillights of the truck when a powerful force pushed him forward several meters and he crashed heavily to the ground.
bang——
Gunshots rang out then, accompanied by intense pain that spread throughout my body.
The burly man let out a groan that sounded inhuman as he lay on the ground, his hands gripping the grass.
His piercing screams echoed throughout the prison, and his companions turned to look at him, speechless.
He seemed to notice his companion's gaze, and he raised his head and reached out, trying to grab his companion.
He didn't notice the increasingly terrified look in his companion's eyes.
To his companions, he was covered in his own thick blood, his upper and lower body separated, especially his upper body, which was still oozing blood.
His companion could no longer look at him directly, and hurriedly turned his head away, struggling several times before finally opening the back door of his truck.
As soon as the back door opened, the zombies, stimulated by the gunshots, filed out and pounced on the man, knocking him to the ground before piling on top of him.
The zombies that emerged later turned their gaze to the burly man on the ground who had been shot; his eyes were gray and lifeless.
The zombies didn't discriminate; they pounced and began tearing at chunks of flesh.
Amidst the nearly piled-up mass of zombies, a pair of blood-stained hands, with glimpses of black riot gear visible, emerged from the O-shaped...
With a struggle, the man slowly revealed himself, freeing himself from the zombies' bites, but his bomb suit was now covered in bite marks and scratches.
He glanced back at the pile of zombies he had just escaped, then staggered toward another truck, the burly man driving it having his abdomen ripped out.
Some zombies were grabbing their intestines and eating them like they were slurping noodles.
Some zombies were also gnawing on the legs they had taken, greedily savoring them.
The man glanced at it, then went straight up and opened the back door of the car.
From then on, the zombies in both cars were released.
The two vehicles slowly drove towards the main body of the prison, and the still-alive man tried to escape by using the zombies as cover.
But after taking only two steps, a huge force struck his leg.
Blood and flesh splattered everywhere; he could even see blood floating in front of him, and—half a calf.
Those familiar pants made him realize it instantly.
That's my leg.
He lay on the ground, the pain like thousands of ants tearing at his nerves. He gritted his teeth, trying to stifle his cries, but a wail still escaped through his teeth.
There was no miracle; the figure of the walking corpse enveloped the man, and he was torn to pieces.
Caesar let out a sigh of regret, "Alas, so close, so very close."
The twenty or thirty zombies, covered in blood and with bits of flesh stuck to their teeth, their eyes bloodshot from the blood, followed the car in a wobbly, unsteady manner.
The governor was also witnessing this scene.
The governor showed no grief over the deaths of his two subordinates; instead, a smug smile appeared on his face.
"It's all show and no substance. So many zombies have appeared, yet they still don't dare to show up with anyone."
The governor glanced back and saw his men and key personnel standing around him, while those cannon fodder recruits were further out.
Andrea, wearing a bulletproof vest and with her hair tied in a ponytail, stood next to the governor, looking dashing and heroic.
Carol blended in with the new recruits; her small stature made her unnoticed.
The governor pondered for a moment and then said, "The enemy is few in number, let's wait a little longer."
"When the time comes, I'll give the order, and I'll lead the core members to charge first. You all need to follow quickly, understand?"
"clear."
