Lord of Mysteries: Taiyi
Chapter 48 Miss Salted Fish
Back at the Harvest Church, Bishop Utravsky told Kurt that Carter's mother's funeral was that afternoon. Kurt declined to attend, saying he wanted to avoid becoming too important to Carter.
He planned to consider the new title only after advancing to Sequence Seven, when the authority of this path would begin to manifest, making it easier to create a new one.
As he entered the church, he saw the blonde Melanie Snell talking to Walker, whom he hadn't seen in a long time. Kurt didn't listen carefully, but he could still roughly understand that Melanie was telling Walker to behave himself.
They stopped their discussion after sensing Kurt's arrival, and the man and the bird turned their heads towards them.
Kurt nodded slightly to them and said:
"The night watchmen have been notified, and they said they might send the teacher and me to assist in the pursuit of 'Fourth Brother'."
Melanie nodded, adjusted her glasses, and said:
"This is also one of my duties. Alright, let's begin today's lesson. Today I will explain some additional knowledge about rituals to you."
Kut nodded and quickly got into a learning state...
Melanie has a strong sense of time; she finished teaching today's content and then the get out of class ended.
As agreed, Kurt took her out with him, while Walker had once again disappeared to who-knows-where. Kurt had reason to suspect that Melanie still possessed the potion recipe for Sequence 7, "The Briber."
After all, he's a vampire who's lived for 120 years, and he joined the church when he was young, so it's normal for him to have some accumulated wealth.
Inside the carriage, Kurt looked at Melanie, who was dressed like a detective, and reminisced as he spoke:
"We are now in the South Bridge area of Backlund, a residential area with many middle-class families living along River Bend Avenue... Going east from here, we will pass through the Backlund Bridge area, which connects the East End, Joewood District, South Bridge area, and the docks. The Bridge area is chaotic, has poor security, and is frequented by gangs, which of course means more commissions..."
"Joewood is a place with many houses and small companies, while the adjacent Hillston is the economic center of Backlund, with the Backlund Stock Exchange, clearinghouse, futures center, headquarters of the seven major banks, various trust funds, and various railway companies. Both places are areas with high traffic and it is easy to get commissions."
"The dock area and the eastern district are lined with factories and are gathering places for ordinary people and laborers. Most of the residents there do not have the money or the courage to hire private investigators."
"The St. George District is home to the Church of the God of Steam and Machines and the Church of St. Hillland, while the Church of the Lord of Storms' Cathedral of St. Wind is in the Georgewood District, and the Church of the Goddess of Night's Church of St. Samuel is in the North District."
"Next are the areas with the strictest security and management: the West End and Queens. They have the least pollution, the best living environment, and the highest cost of living, making them the first choice for wealthy businessmen and nobles, with the nobles preferring the former."
After Kurt finished speaking, he cleared his throat and continued:
"And I live at 36 Ewald Street, at the intersection of the West Side and Queens, and I run a watch shop. I told you about it before."
Melanie nodded and listened with great interest to Kurt's story, pondering where to settle down.
Finally, after spending the afternoon with Kurt, Melanie chose a two-story apartment at 24 Williams Street in the West End, which rented for £150 a year. The most prominent feature of the apartment was its bright and airy layout with excellent natural light.
Melanie moved into her new home with satisfaction. As for the detective agency, she planned to familiarize herself with it for a while before considering anything else and making the necessary preparations...
After Kurt and she had a rather lavish dinner together, Kurt returned home and met Bill, Hugh, and Fors...
Bill still sported his signature slicked-back hair, wore somewhat old-fashioned black-rimmed glasses, and a formal suit.
Hugh was wearing a white shirt, gray-blue trousers, and knee-high boots. His short blond hair was still messy, but he looked very capable and had an air of authority.
Fors, dressed in a pale yellow long dress and wearing a brown wide-brimmed hat, sat on the sofa, her light blue eyes filled with languor and a hint of mockery when she looked at Bill.
This was Kurt's first time meeting the famous Miss Salty. After seeing her eyes, he suspected that she was internally mocking Bill, who had a strong sense of corporate slavery and was serious and rigid. Kurt's lips curled slightly, and he coughed lightly, attracting everyone's attention.
After nodding to Bill, Kurt approached Fors, who had already stood up, politely extended his right hand, and chuckled:
"Hello, Miss Fors. I presume Miss Hugh has already introduced me to you."
Fors first glanced at the "God-given" mark on Kurt's slender left ring finger before tentatively extending her right hand to gently shake Kurt's hand.
"Hello, Mr. Kurt."
Hugh said the ring was Kurt's wife's keepsake. Hmm, Mr. Kurt looks so young. Or was it that his beloved had already passed away shortly after they exchanged their tokens of love? After seeing the ring with her own eyes, and combining it with Hugh's earlier description, Fors immediately conceived a poignant and tragic love story…
In the following minutes, Kurt learned that Hugh had already introduced Fors's job to Bill. Seeing Kurt return unharmed, Bill left without lingering. Before leaving, Bill smiled and mentioned:
"Lori has recently loosened her grip, so you'll probably be 'free' soon."
Kurt thanked him, knowing that it must have been Bill who had been persuading Lori...
Afterwards, Kurt took Fors and Hugh onto the carriage heading to the East End. On the way, he sealed the carriage with spiritual materials before scrutinizing Fors, who seemed a little nervous and scared.
Hugh sensed Fors' slight unease and moved closer to her to indicate that she didn't need to worry.
After seeing the chain on Fors's hand, Kurt finally spoke:
"Is it that magical item that can 'teleport,' and then after you use it once, you'll hear strange and terrifying murmurs every full moon, even causing you to have a tendency to lose control?"
Fors immediately straightened up, quietly pulled Hugh's hand with one hand, and cautiously nodded, saying:
"That's roughly it. I can teleport one or two people along with you, so I can help you escape if you encounter danger!"
Kurt found it inexplicably amusing to see Fors looking so wary, as if afraid Kurt would snatch the extraordinary item from her hands and ready to run away with Rasheed at any moment.
Miss Salty Fish is indeed as kind, straightforward, and slightly timid as she is in the original story… Kurt thought to himself as he spoke:
"Well, if that happens, and you successfully get me away from danger, I can help you resist the Full Moon Talk for free. If it doesn't happen, I'll pay you the same reward as Hugh, but you'll need to give me your blood during the Full Moon, and you'll also owe me another favor."
After hearing that Mr. Kurt would even pay her and had no interest in her bracelet, Fors felt slightly relieved and nodded, saying:
"Okay, I accept these conditions. As for the task, I am not capable of handling anything too difficult."
Kurt touched the ring on his left hand and shook his head, saying:
"Don't worry, it definitely won't threaten your life. I heard you're a writer, and since you don't have much fighting ability, you can teach me a few lessons first."
A class? A teacher? This is a great experience, and it can provide inspiration for future novels. A young and wealthy teacher meets a kind-hearted commoner woman from the slums and is healed from her emotional trauma... With thoughts swirling in her mind, Fors nodded and released her grip on Hugh's hand. She noticed that a patch on Hugh's clothes was slightly damp with sweat.
