American comics: From Hogwarts to God on Earth
Chapter 617 is perhaps the most disappointing Wolverine ever.
Chapter 617 is perhaps the most disappointing Wolverine ever.
"But----"
"No buts." Logan replied mechanically, staring blankly into the distance. "Go back. When you report, say that Wolverine has died at the hands of another mutant. It's better for both of us."
Andrei pursed his lips, unsure how to persuade his idol to cheer up. A long silence fell over the room before Andrei finally whispered, "That's not how it's written in the comics—"
Logan sneered, took one last deep drag to finish his cigarette, and then stood up to leave, when a hand suddenly landed on his shoulder.
"I didn't expect my abilities to deteriorate so quickly. My beast senses seem to have completely failed." Logan thought to himself, turning around to yell back at Andre.
However, what came into view was not the foolish young man named Andrei, but the man who had almost driven him to the brink of despair.
“I knew a Wolverine before, he was just as down on his luck as you,” Rune said, standing in front of Logan with a smile. “But later, he pulled himself together and saved the world.”
"Hmph." Logan didn't respond to Rune's question. He looked at Andre lying on the ground. "So what? He's him, and I'm me. We're not the same."
"Perhaps?" Rune blinked. "But believe me, I mean you no harm."
"Since that's the case—then be honest, how did you find us?" Logan stared intently at the other man. He had indeed been delayed by Andrei for a while, but in any case, this man shouldn't have followed them.
Generally speaking, mutants possess only one ability, and only a few can exhibit two or more abilities. The most typical example is the White Queen, who can turn her entire body into diamonds or use telepathic abilities.
Rune has already demonstrated the ability to activate objects and manipulate energy, and if he wants to get close to himself and Andrei in such a short time, he would need to have super speed or teleportation abilities.
Without a doubt, Rune is not a mutant—at least not a pure mutant.
Logan's question was simple, and Rune shrugged, replying nonchalantly, "My power still lingers within you, so of course I can pinpoint your location."
"—So, are you one of Red Skull's subordinates?"
The problem is even simpler now. Rune shook his head. "Subordinates? Quite the opposite. I have killed a Red Skull. So far, all the Red Skulls I've seen have been cold-blooded, cruel, ambitious paranoiacs. Shooting them for three minutes would be too lenient."
"Three minutes of shooting? I like that way of putting it." Logan sighed. If he could, he'd like to do that too. "So, the question is, what exactly do you want from this old codger?"
Using magic to lift the bartender up, Rune said softly, "Of course I want to know what happened here. The Wolverines I know won't give in easily. What has led you to this state?"
"I've already said, I'm not Wolverine anymore, and I have no interest in—"
Rune took out some food from his workshop: chilled cherry pies, lots of potato chips and chocolate candies, and even sizzling steak.
These extremely precious foods in the wasteland aroused Logan's appetite. The poor old man swallowed hard, and just as he was mentally preparing himself to refuse, Rune pulled out wine from the void.
This is no ordinary wine; it emits cold air, and the liquid reveals a mesmerizing amber color through the glass.
"make a deal!"
Logan had what was probably the most lavish meal he'd had in years; the food hidden on Rune's person was beyond anything anyone could imagine.
"Why can you—just casually—take out so much food?" Logan hadn't even swallowed the steak in his mouth. "Of course—if you don't want to—you don't have to tell me."
I invited you to dinner to try and extract information from you, not to make you turn against the Heavenly Gang!
Despite thinking this, Rune rolled his eyes and still replied to Logan, "That's magic, my friend."
"So you—are not—a mutant?"
-
"I don't know if I count myself, but theoretically I do have some mutant blood." Rune looked at Logan with disdain.
He took Wolverine back to the tavern and even used magic to repair the place, just so that Logan could have a relatively safe and comfortable place to eat, at least with utensils to use.
But Logan immediately started eating, his manners resembling that of a wild beast. Seeing that he was about to speak, Rune rolled his eyes and stopped him, "Finish eating before you talk!"
Logan snorted coldly, which was fairly cooperative.
He's old, but not stupid. The fact that Rune didn't kill the bartender proves the man isn't one of Red Skull's men. But if he really did poison the food—
Being able to eat this meal before I die is worth it.
Logan quickly ate his fill, wolfing down the candy, but he was still trying to stuff it into his clothes. He had two daughters to take care of, and these post-war children rarely had access to such pre-war delicacies.
Only after all his pockets were stuffed full did Logan finally begin to tell his story. Holding a wine glass in his hand, he said with hazy eyes, "Where to begin—it all—"
"Probably when the bad guys team up and wipe out the good guys before they can react."
"In order to eliminate any future trouble, those damned beasts even tried to use nuclear bombs to clean up the land. Fortunately, with the protection of the God, we were not all killed by the nuclear bombs."
At this point, his eyes dimmed. "Although we failed, Lord Doom is merciful. He is still willing to give us a chance to fight the enemy fairly. If we can win, we will become the masters of this territory."
Tears began to fall, making a dripping sound.
"But I—what have I done—Hawkeye, his eyes are half blind, yet he still tries to pull the last remaining heroes into this duel, to fight for the last chance of survival for this land—"
Rune's eyes turned cold; he seemed to have guessed what was going to happen next.
"He came to me, but Wolverine is dead! He's dead!" he said through gritted teeth, enunciating each word clearly. "The only survivor was Logan. That cowardly father didn't dare to show up, he closed the door, but he didn't realize that his eldest son had climbed out the window and ridden his horse after poor Hawkeye."
Logan grabbed Rune's hand and murmured, "What can Hawkeye do? He can't see anything, he can't see anything—"
"So they're all dead, right? Dead in that duel?" Rune asked in a low voice, but he already knew the answer in his heart.
"Yes, they died in that duel, they died by my hand—"
