Chapter 616 There's no Wolverine here, only an old man.

For a mage, especially one of Rune's caliber, toying with a warrior is as easy as eating.

The moment Wolverine's pounce was launched, his target had already teleported away, but the shattered glass and scattered wood chips transformed into ferocious beasts, lunging fiercely at Logan.

Logan roared and attacked relentlessly with his steel claws. The beasts that were struck even made a metallic clanging sound before being knocked away. Even though Wolverine could maintain his peak attack for a short time, he was ultimately no match for the almost endless stream of beasts.

Soon, a stray fish managed to bite his shoulder and thigh, and blood instantly soaked through his tattered denim jacket, dripping down the fabric and leaving a small dark stain on the red soil.

In the past, such an injury would have healed in the blink of an eye, but at this moment, Logan could clearly feel the blood constantly flowing out, the muscles at the wound were stiff and numb, and even the speed at which he raised his paw was half a beat slower.

Most importantly, those living beasts would slow Logan down, further worsening his situation.

"ah!!!"

Logan roared, his body tensing as he endured the excruciating pain, like a lone wolf driven to the brink of despair, his weariness replaced by rage. Ignoring his worsening injuries and the dangling beast, he slammed his feet into the ground.

The force was so great that the beast tore flesh off Logan's body. He charged toward the young man with an aura of fearlessness, his bone claws aimed straight for the man's heart.

But Rune just stared at Logan expressionlessly. This time, he didn't even bother to dodge. As the dark magic surged, the dark light around Rune intensified, forming a black barrier in front of him.

bump!

Logan's steel claws slammed into the barrier, and he fell to the ground. He felt numbness in his arm and a dull ache in his finger bones.

The barrier transformed into a stream of light, penetrating Wolverine's body once more through his claws.

This time, even his vision began to blur. Logan staggered back two steps until he leaned against the half-collapsed bar counter, barely managing to stand with the support of the object.

The beasts created by Rune gathered around, their eyes gleaming with a cold light. At Rune's command, Logan would be torn to shreds.

Given his regenerative abilities, he might be torn to pieces several times before dying in agony.

Wolverine's wounds on his shoulder and other areas were still bleeding profusely, and every breath was accompanied by excruciating pain. The massive blood loss made him feel cold all over, but Logan still stared intently at the young man, and the scene became tense for a moment.

"Um, are you done playing?" the bartender asked softly, peeking out from behind the bar.

Logan, panting heavily, looked at the bartender with disbelief in his eyes. "Why the hell aren't you running? Aren't you afraid of dying?"

The bartender shrugged and said helplessly, "I can't run away, dear Wolverine, we're here to protect your life!"

After saying that, the bartender turned around and asked, "My friend, although I don't know your name, could you spare Logan's life for the sake of Black Bolt and the White Queen?"

Logan's eyes widened. He hadn't realized that he'd been living under someone's surveillance for so long, especially Black Bolt and the White Queen—those two—

"Traitor!" Wolverine's anger shifted, and this statement clearly left the bartender even more helpless.

"We're trying to help you—you can't just dismiss our efforts with such a dismissive statement—"

"Shut up!" Logan's eyes were red with anger. He stared intently at the bartender, but after a while, he slumped to the ground dejectedly. "What right do I have to criticize you?"

"You simply abandoned those painful memories, and forsaken the people of this wasteland, that's all, isn't it?"

"We don't—" The bartender wanted to say something, but in the end he gave up. Rune, standing beside him, frowned deeply—he had always thought this Logan was the one from *The Return of the Wolf*, but now it seemed—

There seems to be a subtle difference?

Just as Rune was pondering all of this, the bartender seized the opportunity and grabbed Logan's hand.

With a hum, a pale blue halo appeared around the two of them, and the next second, the bartender and Logan completely disappeared.

Beside a dry riverbed deep in the desert, the pale blue halo dissipated, and Logan and the bartender suddenly appeared. As soon as they landed, Logan staggered and pushed the bartender aside, leaning against a huge rock and panting heavily.

"My God, they're right, the God's punishment for you is far too severe—"

"Don't mention this!" Logan roared, his shoulder and thigh wounds still bleeding, and as his adrenaline decreased, he could feel the pain becoming more intense.

Before the bartender could speak, three flashes of cold light appeared, precisely positioned against his neck. The sharp tips of the steel claws were only millimeters from his skin; just an inch closer, and they would have easily slit his throat.

"Speak, who are you? What is the purpose of Black Bolt and the White Queen sending you to spy on me?"

His voice was hoarse, almost a roar, and his eyes were full of violence and suspicion. Over the decades, Logan had experienced too much pain and betrayal, which made him no longer believe in any unprovoked kindness in this wasteland.

"Oh no, please don't! I grew up listening to your stories!" The bartender gasped in terror, his chest heaving. "My organization and I mean you no harm, okay?"

The bartender's eyes were filled with terror; they were large and round, looking as harmless as a fawn's. Logan realized almost instantly that this bartender wasn't from this wasteland.

Morality has long since collapsed here, and evil people rule the place. Anyone who can survive here for a long time would not have such eyes, let alone a bartender whose profession involves frequent contact with all sorts of people.

Ironically, Logan himself never wanted to look people in the eye, and his animal senses were also weakened, so Wolverine didn't notice anything amiss with the guy.

Anger quickly turned into helplessness and sorrow. The old man put away his steel claws and sat down next to the bartender.

"Mutants?"

The bartender breathed a sigh of relief, then nodded. "My ability is teleportation; I'm a member of the mutant army."

"You're not a native of this wasteland, are you?" Logan tried to light a cigarette, but the blood on his hands stained the cigarette butt, making it difficult to burn. The bartender immediately and solicitously pulled a lighter from his pocket and lit it for Wolverine.

"Yes! I'm Andrei, a student at Xavier's College. Xavier's College there guarantees job placement, and since my grades are good, I have a wide range of job options," Andrei smiled. "One of them is monitoring you. I've heard many stories about Wolverine; you're my idol—"

"So, look, I've arrived!" A smile still lingered on his face. So much like him, so incredibly like him. If Li Qianhuan were still alive, she could probably smile just as innocently.

Logan's hand stopped, and his expression became extremely complicated. He remained silent for a long time, not knowing what to say. Then the bartender began to talk on and on, recounting Wolverine's life story.

According to him, Logan was not only a great hero who saved the world, but also, together with the X-Men, earned respect for mutants. His story was later adapted into comic books and has been passed down through generations.

Logan couldn't take it anymore halfway through, interrupting the bartender and roaring, "No, shut up!"

Andrei was stunned by the shout. He looked at Logan blankly, not knowing what he had said wrong. Logan realized that his behavior had gone too far, but out of pride, he simply stood up and said softly, "No, there is no Wolverine here, no hero—"

There's only one old man.
